Chapter 4

Author: Tender Love
In the evening, Arlo returned, carrying a small paper bag. "Leia, you're still awake."

He walked over and placed the cake on the table, speaking in a somewhat pleading manner. "I bought a small cake for Anna. Doesn't she have a sweet tooth? I was too anxious earlier, so my tone was a bit harsh.

"Hayden is seriously ill, and our family has good resources. Anna is sensible, so I thought of having her help Hayden. Once Hayden gets better, I'll move the piano back. "

I looked at him coldly. "That piano costs over two million dollars. Your cake costs 20 dollars at most? Is this the guilt you have as a father?"

Arlo's smile froze as his eyebrows instantly furrowed. "Leia, could you please stop talking about money? Isn't it vulgar? Sincerity is priceless! Do you think everything has to be measured by a price tag?"

I sneered, "Alright, if you think money is vulgar, let's sort out the accounts. This year, you used the excuse of pursuing your studies to withdraw eight million dollars in research funds from the company. But I checked the immigration records, and you never went abroad. Where did you spend this money?"

Arlo stopped untying his tie and turned furious. "You investigated me? Leia, you actually had me investigated? What happened to the most basic trust between spouses? "

He slammed his hand on the table, raising his voice. "Yes! I didn't go abroad! Simone just got divorced and returned to the country with her child. She has no one to rely on and is suffering from depression. Can't I help her?

"I spent that eight million dollars on Simone's treatment! What's wrong with that? I'm not like you, who's hell-bent on money. Loyalty is priceless to researchers like us!"

I found it utterly ironic.

Back when he was struggling with research funding and facing setbacks everywhere, I defied all opposition, sold my shares, and invested my first sum of money in him. He was unkempt in the lab. I was the one who brought him food and clothes every day, making sure he looked presentable.

We were married for seven years. I respected his talent and tolerated his aloofness. When he said that his research work required isolation, I shouldered the dual pressures of raising the child and running the company alone.

Now, to protect his first love and another man's son, he was accusing me of being heartless.

"Arlo, your so-called loyalty was paid for with my money. Have you forgotten that all your research projects and labs are funded by Jordan Group?"

Arlo sneered, looking condescendingly and smugly at me. "Leia, get this straight. You begged to invest in me. My research is priceless and can change the industry! Countless investors are always lining up to invest in me. I only chose you back then so that you could enhance your resume. Without me, you're just a vulgar nouveau riche!"

With that said, he turned around to leave.

I called out to him, "Stop. Arlo, if you walk out this door today, I'll freeze all your project funding immediately."

Arlo stopped and turned around to look at me, his eyes full of disdain. "I dare you. My project is about to reap its results. If you withdraw your investment now, you'll be the one who suffers. If you touch my funds, I'll expose your short-sighted, profit-driven capitalist nature to the media!"

He was confident I did not have the guts to do so. For the past seven years, I had let him have whatever he wanted. I cherished him and sheltered him from the smallest hurdles. He now thought I could not live without him.

"Fine." I nodded, my tone calm. "Go, then."

Arlo snorted coldly, seemingly pleased with my compliance. He hummed a tune as he left.

Just as the door was about to close, his phone rang. It was the lab's financial director calling.

Arlo assumed it was good news, so he deliberately stopped, put the call on speakerphone, and looked at me defiantly. "Hello? Has the new equipment arrived? I'll be there soon..."

"Professor Payton! We have a problem! All the remaining research funding for the lab has been withdrawn!" the director shouted in a panic.

The day Arlo received the court summons was the same day as Jacobville's science and technology summit. It was the stage he had always valued the most. He had originally planned to present his latest research findings on this day and become famous overnight. However, he did not have an invitation, so he could not even enter the venue. He lingered at the entrance, stopping every investor who passed by."Mr. Lester! Take a look at my project! I only need five million dollars! No, two million dollars!""Mr. Wilson! I'm Arlo Payton! We've had drinks before!"Those who used to fawn over him avoided him like the plague.Just then, a black stretched Lincoln slowly stopped in front of the red carpet. The car door opened. I wore a haute couture gown and exquisite makeup, looking imposing. The flashlights flashed wildly, and the reporters swarmed toward me."Ms. Jordan! I heard that the latest biotech project invested by Jordan Group has made a major breakthrough. Is it true?""Ms. Jordan

Arlo's research came to a complete halt due to a break in the funding chain. He visited all the investment companies in Jacobville, but no one was willing to see him.Everyone in the circle knew I made him who he was and that he had offended me. Investing in Arlo would be openly insulting Jordan Group. No one would risk offending the goddess of Jacobville for a project that had yet generated profits.Arlo constantly encountered setbacks. When he returned to his small rented house, what greeted him was not gentle consolation but endless arguments.Holding a payment notice, Simone screamed hysterically, "Arlo! When are you going to get money? Hayden needs to go to kindergarten! The landlord wants to raise the rent! The water and electricity bills haven't been paid! "Didn't you say you're a great scientist? Didn't you say you'll live a better life without that woman? Where's the money? Where is it?"Arlo irritably tugged at his tie and threw his briefcase onto the couch. "Can you s

Arlo failed to recognize the reality of things. He moved into a villa near his lab with Simone and Hayden. That night, he posted on his social media.[Petty birds don't understand the aspirations of magnificent ones. True scholars never fear poverty. After leaving behind the controlling capitalist, I finally got a taste of freedom.]I casually clicked the like button before texting the lawyer. Leia: [Claim the villa tomorrow morning.]The villa where Arlo was currently living was fully paid for by me before marriage. However, he seemed to have forgotten this fact and regarded it as his and Simone's love nest.Early the next morning, I led the moving company to the villa. As soon as the door opened, a foul smell hit me.Snack crumbs and footprints were everywhere on the expensive carpet. The originally tidy living room was filled with clutter. The two-million-dollar piano was standing alone in the corner. The piano lid was wide open, and the black and white keys were covered wit

The crowd erupted into an uproar."How could such a person be qualified to be a professor? He's truly the scum of the academic world!""So, he's a leech living off his wife? I get it now."Arlo trembled as his face turned crimson.Simone's face was even paler. She hugged Hayden and curled up into a ball, wishing she could find a crack in the ground to hide in.Suddenly, Arlo looked up and stared at me fiercely."Leia! Do you think I'm afraid of your tricks? I'm working on a national key project! If you don't increase the investment by 50 million dollars, this matter won't end today! If the project fails, you'll be hindering the development of science!"He went all out, revealing his shameless and scoundrel-like nature. "Look! This is what capitalists do! They destroy what they fail to get! She's just jealous that Simone is gentler and understands me more than her!"A series of jeers echoed around. Everyone looked at him like watching a clown's final struggle.I felt extremely di

Arlo frowned. "I did make that promise, but I didn't say I would only accompany her. Simone is in poor health and can't do intense exercise. Hayden wants to participate in the competition. As his godfather, why can't I help out?"Simone held Arlo's arm and said meekly, "Yes, Ms. Jordan. Hayden really wants to win just once. He has never participated in a parent-child sports event. And..."She glanced at Anna's swollen face and covered her mouth in a gasp. "Gosh, why isn't it healed yet? It looks so terrifying. Hayden is timid. Ms. Jordan, please keep Anna away from here. Don't scare him."Anna trembled all over, with tears welling up in her eyes. Suddenly, she rushed forward and tried to push Hayden. "This is my daddy! You go away! This is my daddy!"Hayden was pushed slightly, but Anna did not apply much force. However, he slumped to the ground and screamed, "Ah! Someone attacked me! The ugly clown attacked me! Daddy, help! My leg is broken!"Arlo's expression changed. He rushed

Arlo glanced at me and merely frowned briefly before turning to the director and saying, "What's with all the fuss? Nothing should be wrong with the funds."After hanging up, Arlo walked over to me and sighed helplessly. "Leia, stop it. I know you're upset. It's just because I lent the piano to Hayden, right? Will you really joke about something so important to the company? You even went as far as to cause trouble with the finance department. "If you do this, outsiders will laugh at you. They'll think you can't separate public and private matters and are just a woman who only throws money around."I sat on the couch without even looking up. "Arlo, I already signed and stamped the investment withdrawal. The legal process has been completed. Do you think I'm so free to be putting on an act for you?"Arlo seemed to think I was still stubborn. He reached out to take my hand, but I sidestepped him. His hand froze in midair, and a hint of anger finally appeared on his face. "Leia! Don
