Lily fixed Nathan with a furious glare. He scoffed. "I saw you."Something in her chest lurched. He stepped closer, slow and deliberate. "I saw you with him. Lily you've been betraying me for a lot longer than I realized, haven't you?"She forced herself to stay composed, voice dripping with contempt. "Is that how it works? You're so filthy you assume everyone else must be too?""Even if I had cheated, Nathan, it wouldn't come close to what you've already done."His eyes flashed. "So you admit it."Lily: "..."He'd completely lost it.She turned to walk away."Lily!" he barked after her. "Swear it, then. Swear there's nothing between you and Adrian."She kept walking.ExceptSerena came out of the ward just then, eyes red and swollen.Staring straight at her.Something in her expression anger, humiliation, the particular sting of feeling betrayed.Lily pressed her lips together."How could you?" In the ward.Beatrice's eyes found Lily immediately, and she reached out a hand.Lily sat on the edge of the bed.Took the old woman's hand in hers.Tears welled in Beatrice's eyes. "None of you thought to tell me something this important was happening! This is no small thing, and you all just... let it happen."Lily lowered her gaze.Something hollow lingered there."Tell Grandma," Beatrice pressed. "What's really going on between the two of you?"Lily pressed her lips together. "Grandma Pierce, I"Right thenNathan walked in.Beatrice brightened, waving him over. "Perfect timing. The both of you tell me what's actually standing in your way."Nathan's expression, looking at Lily, was anything but simple.Lily managed a gentle smile. "Grandma, we've already made our decision. There's nothing left to talk through."Beatrice wasn't having it."Grandma," Lily said softly, "please don't worry about this right now. Focus on getting well.""I won't get better until the two of you fix this,"

The studio closed for the holidays.Lily was the last one out of the building.DownstairsShe spotted Vanessa handing out New Year gifts to the security guards. One of them beamed. "Miss Cole's going to have a great year ahead.""You too," Vanessa said brightly. "I'll bring you wedding candy next year."The guard blinked, surprised. "Miss Cole's not married yet? Lucky man, whoever he turns out to be."Vanessa just smiled.Lily walked past without turning her head."Lily!"Vanessa spotted her and hurried over. "Happy New Year, Lily."Lily shot her a look of pure distaste. "Get away from me."Vanessa wasn't bothered in the slightest. She pushed her stomach forward, just slightly, toward Lily. "I'll let you know when the baby's born."Lily rolled her eyes. "You're unbelievable."With that, she walked out of the building.Vanessa watched her go, smug satisfaction written all over her face. As far as she was concerned, Lily was already cracking. She figured after two childless years of mar

Knock knock knock.A rap on the door."Come in," Lily said.Lucy stepped inside. "Lily you wanted to see me?"Lily smiled. "Sit down."Lucy said, "Oh," and took a seat. "What's this about?""Your family's in Elmsworth, if I remember right. That's a long trip. High-speed rail or flying back for the holidays?"Lucy brightened. "Got a train ticket, actually. I'm surprised you remembered where I'm from."Lily just smiled. She went on, patient. "You and Ethan have known each other a while, haven't you?"Lucy nodded. "Three or four years now. Met him through a club in college fireworks, actually. We were both into it.""Mm," Lily said. "What's your honest read on him? If you had to say.""He's fine," Lucy said. "A little cheap sometimes. Otherwise, decent enough guy."Lily nodded, saying nothing.Lucy, thoroughly confused by now, finally just asked, "Lily are you trying to pick between the two of us for something?"Lily tilted her head. "What makes you say that?"Lucy laughed. "Just a feeli

The words had barely left her mouth. An uneasy silence dropped over the room.Lily bit the inside of her cheek and rushed to clarify, "I mean you can come up here. It's too cold down there."The sentence came out in one breathless rush. Her ears were burning before she'd even finished it. She buried her face deeper into the blanket, breath coming quick and uneven.Adrian didn't answer right away. The walls weren't thick. She could hear the wind howling outside, clear as anything.Wrapped in the blanket, Lily could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears. She lost track of how long the silence stretched. Then a soft laugh, barely audible.Or maybe she'd imagined it.A moment laterShe felt the mattress dip beside her.Adrian lay down. The bed was wide enough that there was real distance between them.Still she could feel the heat radiating off him.A blanket lay between their bodies. And something unspoken lay there too.Drifting quietly across the space between them. His breathing

Lily's heart gave an odd little lurch at those words. Then she caught herself. The suite probably wouldn't be any different from the night she'd spent with Adrian at the hospital, surely. She let it go and stopped protesting. They took their key and headed upstairs.Adrian pushed the door open.Took one look at the cramped little room, and his brow furrowed though nothing about it actually changed. He went in to check the so-called suite for himself.Who could have guessedWhat the receptionist had called a "suite" turned out to be a single bed, barely wide enough for one person.A child a few years past toddler age wouldn't have fit comfortably.Lily offered, helpfully, "This kind of room's usually sold as a family package for a couple with one young kid, under fourteen or so."Adrian: "..."He recovered and said simply, "You'll take the bed. I'll sleep outside."Lily shook her head quickly. "No, really, I'm smaller I'll fit fine. It's one night."He didn't leave her room to argue.
