Chapter 4

Author: Pushover
He sneered and tapped his fingers against the table.

"Why don’t we set fire to everything she treasures while she’s still in the hospital? Maybe… the shock will finally make her spirit collapse completely?"

Mom hesitated, her voice as soft as a sigh.

"Surely it won’t come to that… Nora may not know how to act spoiled like Suzy or cling to us while saying sweet things, but she has still lived with us for eighteen years…"

Dad swept a cold gaze over their hesitation, then ground out his cigarette in the ashtray.

"Let’s try it. We can always buy Nora new things afterward. She has always been easy to placate. A little coaxing is all it takes to make her feel better."

I crouched in the shadows with Mimi in my arms and watched them return to the old villa.

Then I watched helplessly as my computer, diaries, every gift I had received over the past eighteen years, and even my room twisted and collapsed in the flames, eventually turning into a glaring sea of red.

The heat blasted against my face, but my blood felt colder than ice.

Suddenly, Mimi broke free from my arms. Her orange shape flashed like lightning as she charged straight toward the inferno devouring my past.

"Who’s there?!" Nathan’s furious roar tore through the night.

"It’s that animal Nora always fed!"

Noman’s voice carried a sick excitement.

"Hurry! Don’t let it get away!"

"Kill it, too. Nora will completely break down!"

The blood in my veins froze.

Nathan and Noman lunged at Mimi. One seized her by the neck while the other grabbed her hind legs. They were about to strangle her.

"Don’t!"

I charged toward the fire like a madwoman, but the blast of heat sent me tumbling to the ground.

Scalding tears burned trails down my face. I could no longer tell whether the pain came from the smoke or the agony in my heart.

"Nora?!"

Mom’s voice exploded behind me.

I slowly raised my head and saw them standing at the villa entrance. The firelight cast their expressions from viciousness to shock.

"When did you come back?"

Dad’s voice sounded somewhat strained.

I lay sprawled in the yard, my oversized hospital gown whipping in the night wind.

"The hospital said… my account was overdue."

Only then did they realize that no one had taken care of me since I woke up.

The air suddenly froze.

Mom gave an awkward explanation.

"Everyone was busy, so w-we forgot…"

Noman suddenly exploded.

"Are you stupid? You had a phone and a bank card. Couldn’t you pay the bill yourself?"

I lowered my head and answered honestly.

"You took my phone away on the day I came back. You said you would buy me a new one, but I never heard anything after that.

"As for the bank card… the PIN was wrong, so I couldn’t use it."

All four of them froze. For the first time, I saw a trace of guilt in their eyes.

"If you forgot the PIN, why didn’t you ask?"

Nathan’s furious roar broke the silence, but the obvious guilt in his voice betrayed his unease.

"Suki is so clever and always says exactly what she wants. Unlike you, you’re as quiet as a locked box."

I lowered my eyes, unsure how to respond.

After a year apart, I returned to find every one of them treating me with distance and suspicion.

I felt like a stranger who had wandered into someone else’s home, terrified that one wrong word or step would make them reject me completely.

How could I bring myself to ask them for anything else?

Noman could not stand the suffocating atmosphere.

He kicked over the loose stones by his feet in fury, then pointed at me and shouted.

"Why are you making that pathetic face again? Ever since you came back, this family hasn’t had a moment of peace! Now there’s even been a fire! The house is burned down, and our home is gone. Are you happy now?"

“And your handwriting is exactly the same as Nora’s!”Noman staggered and nearly fell to his knees in front of everyone. His voice came out as hoarse as sandpaper."There’s always a pot of mint on the windowsill in your lab… It’s the only plant Nora ever managed to keep alive… You are Nora!"His voice rose suddenly, thick with tears.I watched their reddened eyes and trembling fingertips with cold indifference.Once someone was hurt beyond the point of endurance, even the closest bonds could lose all meaning."I’m sorry, but you really have mistaken me for someone else."Yet the four people in front of me were certain I was the person they were searching for. They clung to that belief like a lifeline and completely fell apart before me.Richard’s tears struck the patent documents as he spoke, every word filled with remorse."We were wrong… We mistook trash for treasure and thorns for roses… We were blind to the truth, and only now can we finally see it… Can you forgive us this once?"R

The memories exploded through their minds like thunder. The AI algorithm Suzy confidently discussed at the celebration party was based on a prototype Nora had sketched in her draftbook. The crucial funding that saved the company from collapse came from the business proposal Nora worked countless nights to complete.Even the title of their “genius daughter” was earned through eighteen years of Nora’s hard work.Rain poured outside when Richard suddenly rushed into the garage as if he had lost his mind.Inside a storage cabinet soaked by the rain lay a charred sketchbook. It was the only keepsake Nora left behind. The yellowed pages still clearly showed the first draft of the family company’s logo that she designed. At that moment, Suzy’s hysterical screams rang out from the second floor."I don’t care! I want that yacht! You were the ones who insisted on bringing me back! You should be treating me well!"Richard fell to his knees on the damp concrete floor and finally understood. The pe

In the end, Dad was the first to turn and leave.Mom followed, then my two brothers.Their footsteps gradually faded down the corridor, leaving Suzy sitting on the hospital bed in stunned disbelief.Outside the window, dusk settled over the world.A withered leaf tapped lightly against the glass, as if asking an unspoken question. When the last footsteps disappeared at the end of the corridor, the aggrieved expression vanished from Suzy’s face."System!"She lowered her voice and gritted her teeth."What is going on? Why did I run into those awful people again?"The system answered truthfully.[Nora Hart voluntarily gave up all ownership of this body and left everything to you.]Suzy’s expression froze for a moment."What do you mean? She… She doesn’t want this identity anymore?"The system’s voice carried an unusual solemnity.[That’s right. She chose to leave permanently.]"Ha!"Suzy suddenly laughed. Her fingers, tipped with perfectly manicured nails, twirled a strand of hair."Tha

As they stared at me in sudden terror, I turned around and leaped out the window. The moment the wind roared past me, a heart-wrenching scream erupted behind me."Nora, no!"I fell from the great height, yet I felt none of the agony I expected. Instead, I sank into a chaotic void. The system’s cold notification sounded beside my ear.[You left too soon. Your soul must remain in the human world for half a day before the final transfer can be completed.]I nodded blankly, but my soul drifted toward the hospital against my will.In the stark hospital room, four figures surrounded my battered body. This time, their eyes were finally filled with genuine guilt and remorse.Mom’s lips trembled violently as her tears struck the floor."Nora, I was wrong…"Dad hunched over like a child who had done something wrong.Nathan dropped to his knees and slammed his fist into the floor until his knuckles began to bleed."She was my own sister! I’m a damn monster!"Noman gripped the window frame so tig

The expressions of all four of them suddenly froze, as if a heavy blow had finally jolted them awake. They seemed to realize at last that they had treated me terribly.Mom forced down her emotions and softened her voice."Nora, you’ve misunderstood…"I looked up at them."There’s no misunderstanding. Don’t you want Suzy Lane back? I’ll leave tomorrow and give you what you want."All four of them stiffened, clearly unprepared for my decisiveness.Dad’s voice softened in a way it rarely did."Nora, it’s not that we don’t like you… We just want to know where Suzy is and whether she’s doing well."He paused, as if trying to salvage the situation."It’s not that we don’t love you. We’re just… worried about her. She isn’t as strong as you. She’s delicate and cries easily…"Once we see Suzy and make sure she’s doing well, our family can live happily together again. All right?"I could not hold back my tears any longer. If they had said those words when I first returned instead of hurting me a

Nathan delivered another cruel blow with a cold laugh."You’re nowhere near as good as Suki! After she came, she helped our family secure three international patents in a row and elevated us straight into high society. What can you do besides cause trouble?"I slowly raised my eyes."The fire? The patents?"How ridiculous. They started the fire themselves. As for the patents, the old me had stayed up countless nights developing them, hoping to surprise them after my coming-of-age ceremony.I never expected Suzy to steal all the credit. The application dates were clearly printed on the documents. If they had been willing to take a closer look, they would have known that I was the one who earned those patents.Yet they continued to believe they were all Suzy’s achievements…Dad waved his hand impatiently."Enough! The house is burned down, so let it burn. We’ll stay in a hotel tonight!"The four of them exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes drifting toward the villa next door at the sam
