I was a runaway mermaid princess. To break the curse on a pirate captain's two sons, I sacrificed my radiant tail and the voice I treasured above all to a witch. I was left crippled and confined to a wheelchair, and whenever I opened my mouth, my voice came out in an ugly, breathy rasp. But they swore that one of them would marry me and the other would guard me for the rest of my life. Then, during a clash at sea, they rescued a human woman and kept her aboard as a maid. From that day on, everything changed. They were both addicted to the maid's body and could not tear themselves away from her. The younger one said, "You're so beautiful. Far more beautiful than Heloise, that fish with no legs..." The older one said, "If we didn't owe her our lives, neither of us would ever marry her." I wheeled myself onto the deck and released a raven with a letter tied to its leg. I had accepted the proposal of the most terrifying overlord of the oceans. The Basque brothers still didn't know that the witch's contract spelled out one condition: the moment they betrayed me, the curse would return. One would turn back into a toad, the other into an octopus.

Chapter 1
I stopped my chair outside Captain Basque's door and knocked.Half an hour earlier, what I had overheard outside the lower storeroom still lingered in my mind.I had meant to fetch some painkillers, and through the half-open door I saw the three of them inside.Reno's broad back was against the sacks, and he was bent over kissing Lilia, the maid.Lilia pushed him off, breathless. "Don't. Heloise will be hurt if she sees. You are going to marry her, after all...""Don't bring up that tiresome arrangement." Reno raked a hand through his hair, irritated.“Father insists we owe her our lives and is forcing one of us to marry her to repay the debt. She has no tail now, she can't even walk, and her voice sounds like a broken bellows. Marrying her would be nothing but a burdensome obligation.”From the shadows, Oslan pushed up his gold wire-rimmed glasses. He spoke calmly, as though stating the obvious.“It's a debt we owe. There's no getting out of it. But marriage is only a title. Marrying

Chapter 2
For the next few days I didn't leave my cabin.Every day I studied that roll of parchment. On the evening of the sixth day, the fleet put in at Blackrock Harbor.Captain Basque sent someone to tell me to visit the clinic in town and have my legs examined.I wheeled myself onto the deck, where Oslan and Reno were directing the sailors unloading.Lilia had changed into a brand-new dress and stood to one side, ordering everyone around.I went down the gangway in my chair, wanting some air in town.Lilia appeared out of nowhere and hurried toward me with eager concern."Heloise, are you going ashore? Let me push you!"As she reached for my wheelchair, I brushed her hand aside in disgust. At that light contact, Lilia suddenly shrieked and fell, scraping a wide patch of skin from her palm."Lilia!" Reno dropped the rope and came tearing over, gathering her tenderly into his arms.Oslan walked over and looked at me, every glance an accusation sharpened by utter disappointment."Heloise, how l

Chapter 3
After the sea beast withdrew, Lilia complained that her dress was ruined. So Reno pushed me along with them to the largest general store in town. The front hall housed the couture department, where nobles crowded around bolts of fine fabric. My wheelchair quickly drew a good many sidelong looks."Look at that woman in the wheelchair. She's extraordinarily beautiful...""Shame she's a cripple..."Just then an old scholar with a monocle cried out, "She isn't a cripple... Look at the markings behind her ears! She's a mermaid! And more than that... she's a mermaid who has sacrificed part of herself!""She gave up her tail? Whoever she did it for must be very happy..."Lilia listened to the whispers around us, then approached with a smile and pushed my chair toward the fine-wine section. "Heloise... you've been so good to those two brothers. Let me pour you a glass..."I had no intention of humoring her.But she gripped my chair hard, and her eyes grew more and more vicious. The next second

On the evening of the seventh day, I climbed out of bed unsteadily.Everything in front of me was a blur, and I could only feel my way along the wall with my hands.I lost count of how many times I fell, and at last I got out of the clinic.Tonight was the engagement feast, and I had to go. Not to marry them, but to end all of it.I felt my way back to the harbor and was helped aboard by a sailor. The banquet hall blazed with light and rang with laughter.I pushed the doors open and the noise stopped dead.I was wearing that dress stained with dye, and my eyes were empty.Captain Basque came over quickly, his voice full of shock."Heloise, what has happened to you?"I ignored him and went straight to the center of the hall.Lilia's voice came from ahead, close to tears."Heloise, why have you come to ruin our banquet? Ever since I came aboard, you've bullied me for being an ordinary human and fought me over Oslan and Reno. Have you come to kill me? I'll give them back to you now. Pleas

Chapter 5
Reno burst into deafening laughter. He strode over and closed a hand around my throat. "Who besides us would ever be willing to marry you?"I looked calmly at Reno, whose shape had already faded into shades of gray before me.I answered, "Cyrus, Lord of the Deep.""Heloise, has your mind gone? Lord of the Deep? The tyrant out of legend who can overturn the four oceans?""If you're going to lie, pick something believable! You're crippled, you can't even get into the water. Where would you have met him?"I didn't struggle as he tightened his grip and shook me roughly.Oslan came over and pried Reno's hand off.Arrogance was written all over his face."Reno, don't put hands on her. We don't want people saying we bully the helpless.""Heloise, have you finished? You'd invent a lie this absurd to get out of the marriage. Do you think dragging in a random name will hide how vicious and jealous you are?"Lilia peeked out from behind Oslan, her voice simpering."Heloise, I know you're hurting.

Chapter 6
Reno scrambled up off the floor and pointed at Cyrus, cursing."Don't think a bit of stage trickery can frighten anyone! Heloise, where did you hire this illusionist?"Oslan recovered his composure and gave a cold laugh."Heloise, you think finding someone to put on a show will make us believe you're the Lord of the Deep's betrothed? You're too naive. Do you know what an illusionist like that costs in gold? Where would you get the money? Did you steal it from the ship?"Lilia peeked out from behind Oslan, her voice timid."Heloise, if you're really short of money, I could share some of the allowance Oslan gives me. Make him stop performing, it's frightening..."Before she finished, Cyrus raised a hand.Lilia's voice cut off.She clutched at her own throat in terror, her feet leaving the ground, as though gripped by an enormous invisible hand."Too loud," Cyrus said coldly.Oslan blanched, drew his sword, and charged at Cyrus."Let her go! You lunatic!"Cyrus didn't so much as look at h

Chapter 7
In the days after we returned to the coral palace, Cyrus restored my strength with the finest seaweed salves.I lay on a soft seashell bed and listened to a seahorse attendant report on events above the waves.Since my departure, Oslan and Reno had gone completely mad. They searched everywhere for me, even going so far off course that they sailed into dangerous reefs. And Lilia, seeing that I had truly gone, finally dropped the pretense."She complains every day about the food on the ship and about the jewelry Oslan gives her not being fine enough," the seahorse attendant said with relish."She has been urging them to rob passing merchant vessels, saying it is the only way to keep up with her spending."I laughed coldly."And they agreed?""Not at first, but Lilia is an excellent actress. She cried that she felt insecure and could relax only when she saw gold. She even threatened to throw herself into the sea if they stopped loving her."The attendant imitated Lilia's affected tone."O

The sea folk could no longer suppress their laughter, and it rippled through the hall.Oslan had become a toad half the height of a man, covered in oozing poison glands and croaking hideously.Reno lay collapsed on the floor, his limbs entirely turned into slick octopus tentacles that slapped about at random, leaving trails of black slime."No! How did this happen? My face!" Oslan cried out in despair, but the only sound he produced was an ugly croak.Reno waved a tentacle, trying to catch a pillar and pull himself up, and fell heavily when the suckers wouldn't obey him."Lilia! Help me up!" Reno shouted at her.Lilia had been staring greedily at a night-glowing pearl on the table. She turned at the sound and let out a piercing scream."Ah! A monster! Get away! Don't touch me!"She backed away, looking at Reno as though he were a pile of rotting refuse.Reno's tentacle froze in midair, and he stared at her in disbelief."Lilia? You're calling me a monster? Didn't you say you would love

Oslan's enormous toad body heaved. The weeping poison glands kept splitting open from the force of his regret, leaking green fluid. He turned to me with difficulty, and tears actually ran from those bulging toad eyes."Heloise... I'm sorry... I didn't know... I truly didn't know she was that kind of person...""Back then, after you lost your legs, your temper grew increasingly erratic. Lilia always seemed so understanding and yielded to you at every turn. We convinced ourselves that you were using your powers to bully a defenseless human."Oslan nudged his gold wire-rimmed glasses, which now hung crookedly on his toad face. He tried to reclaim his old air of clever composure, but only looked absurd."I thought we were protecting someone weaker. I thought you had changed. It was all her fault! She is too good an actress! Heloise, will you forgive me? I truly am sorry. I'm not begging only because the curse came back!"Reno dragged his heavy octopus body over as well, his tentacles leavi

I looked at the wreckage across the floor and the two hideous creatures, and felt only sorrow."Forgive?"I shook my head, and the silver tail caught the light."You seem to have misunderstood something. You tormented Lilia to vent your own anger at being deceived, and to ease your own guilt. What has that to do with me?"Oslan shuddered, and the light in those toad eyes went out entirely.Reno's tentacles fell limp on the floor with a despairing moan.Cyrus came to my side and gathered me into his arms. His cold gaze passed over the two on the floor."Throw them out."Two enormous deep-sea crab guards came forward, took Oslan and Reno up in their great claws, and dragged them out of the palace.Lilia, in her large bubble, was rolled out after them like refuse. From that day on, the edge of the Black Sea had two strange monsters.A giant toad and an octopus roamed the waters outside the coral palace day and night. They don't attack passing ships and they don't try to approach the palac
