The envelope was thicker than I expected, it was plain. No name on the front, just the seal of the hospital in the upper left corner. I stared at it for a long time without moving, my fingers curling and uncurling against the arms of the chair.

I wasn’t in an office or a boardroom. I wasn’t facing down investors or legal teams. I was sitting alone in the backseat of a black SUV, the engine running idle outside the hospital, while my entire future hung in the balance of a single document.

The driver said nothing, eyes forward. I took a breath, then another, then I opened it.

The words were clinical, objective, rows of data, columns I didn’t understand and then, there it was, in bold: Probability of Paternity: 0.00%

My vision blurred, zero, not fifty, not ten, not even one. Just… zero.

The paper slipped from my hands and fluttered to the floor like a feather. It landed face up, the truth glaring back at me as if mocking everything I’d let myself believe these past months.
