Alex

I check my watch again. It’s been over an hour since Sophia was supposed to show up.

At first, I tell myself she’s just running late. Maybe something came up—traffic, an extra class, a last-minute errand. But when my calls go unanswered and my messages stay unread, my patience wears thin.

Something doesn’t feel right.

I grab my car keys and head out, tracking her phone’s location to her new apartment. The logical part of my brain tells me I’m overreacting, but the other part—the one that’s seen how reckless my half-brother, Nathan can be—refuses to take chances.

By the time I reach her building, it’s dark. I park haphazardly, slam the door shut, and make my way up. A neighbor, an older woman carrying a bag of groceries, gives me a suspicious look when I stop near her apartment door.

“Looking for someone?” she asks.

“Sophia Mitchell,” I reply, keeping my voice even. “She moved in recently.”

The woman’s expression softens a little. “Ah, the young lady in 3B. I haven’t seen her much

Sophia’s POVI should have known running wouldn’t be enough. The thing in the rearview mirror didn’t blink. It didn’t falter. It didn’t even breathe. It just kept moving—like hunger wrapped in skin. And the worst part?It wore my face perfectly.Same eyes.Same scars.Same smile I only used when I was lying.Alex’s hands tightened on the wheel, knuckles white with tension.Lena hadn’t said a word since we left Site Eleven in flames behind us.Silence pressed in thick, like fog with teeth.“What is that?” Alex asked, voice low. Controlled. On the edge of breaking.I couldn’t answer.Because I already knew. And knowing hurt more than I could say aloud.“It’s the contingency,” I said finally. “In case I failed. In case I ran.”“They cloned you?” Lena spat. “Jesus, Sophia—how many secrets are you hiding?”“Too many.”But this one… this was the worst.Project Nyx hadn’t just been about bioware weapons or neural mapping or unlocking doors to dimensions we couldn’t name.It had been about in

  • After Divorce, I became the CEO of my Ex-Husband's Company    Chapter 248

Sophia’s POVThere’s a moment right before a bullet hits flesh when the world pauses.Silence stretches thin. Time bends. Every breath is heavier than gravity. That was this moment. But no bullet would save us now.Nyx stood beneath the ruin of Site Eleven like a god stripped from mythology and reborn in science. Her hair floated weightless, her skin bled light, and her mouth moved with words I couldn’t hear—only feel beneath my ribs. Not English. Not any language born from human tongues. It sounded like the end of prayers.Damian knelt like a disciple beneath her feet, smiling, broken. His blood marked the floor like an offering.Lena stood frozen, gun raised, breath locked in her throat.Alex pulled me behind him with one arm, weapon steady, heart racing so loud I could feel it through his jacket. And me?I watched Nyx.Watched the girl I once tried to save unravel into something impossible. She wasn’t just a girl anymore. She wasn’t even alive in the way we understood life. She was

Sophia’s POVThe road to hell isn’t paved with good intentions. It’s paved with silence.Hours of it.No words between us as the Jeep carved through forgotten roads, asphalt bleeding into dirt, dirt into gravel, gravel into nothing but earth and memory.Alex drove like the devil was at our heels. Maybe he was.Lena sat shotgun, eyes fixed on the map like it owed her an apology for every twist of fate that led us here.I watched the horizon.Watched it shrink into something narrower, sharper, until it wasn’t sky anymore—it was a target. We didn’t speak because there was nothing left to say.We all knew what waited at the end of this road.Madrid. Site Eleven. The roots of every lie we’d ever tried to bury clawing their way back to the surface. And Damian. If he was alive, he was there. If he wasn’t… what waited might be worse.I counted our weapons again. Silly ritual. I knew every clip, every round, every knife hidden beneath my jacket. But counting gave me something to hold onto. Som

  • After Divorce, I became the CEO of my Ex-Husband's Company    Chapter 246

Sophia’s POVFor the first time in weeks, I slept without hearing the sirens in my head.No alarms. No breach codes. No nightmares wrapped in the shape of my brother’s face.Just Alex’s arm around my waist. Liana breathing soft and even between us on the narrow cot. The steady thrum of the generator somewhere beneath our feet.I woke to sunlight leaking through the seams of the boarded windows. It felt… unnatural.Too bright. Too soft. Like something was waiting just beyond it.I slipped from beneath Alex’s arm carefully, brushing a kiss to Liana’s forehead. She didn’t stir. Exhaustion had claimed her deeper than fear ever could. In the small kitchen, Lena sat cross-legged on the counter, a half-empty can of peaches in one hand and a knife in the other. She didn’t look up when I entered.“You’re up early,” I said. She shrugged. “Didn’t sleep.”The words were simple. The meaning wasn’t.“How’s the leg?” I asked. She flexed it once, winced. “Still attached. That’s enough for now.”I pou

  • After Divorce, I became the CEO of my Ex-Husband's Company    Chapter 246

Sophia’s POVThe girl’s whisper rippled through the air like smoke through shattered glass. My name.Soft. Uncertain. But real.Alex heard it too. I felt it in the way his grip tightened on my wrist, the silent question burning in his eyes.Liana.No. It couldn’t be.We left them safe. We left them far away from this nightmare, buried in the wreckage of my past.Didn’t we?Alex’s jaw clenched. “Tell me that wasn’t—”“It was.”The air shifted. The endless white began to bleed gray, like ink seeping through fabric. Shapes emerged in the distance—trees without leaves, buildings half-swallowed by sand, sky fractured in angles that hurt to look at.It looked like Madrid. Like Site Eleven. Like nowhere and everywhere we’d ever run from. And standing beneath a crooked streetlamp that flickered between dimensions…Liana. Her hair hung limp around her face. Her small hands clutched something close to her chest. A doll? A shard of glass? I couldn’t tell.Behind her, the shadows moved. Watching.

  • After Divorce, I became the CEO of my Ex-Husband's Company    Chapter 244

Sophia’s POVI blinked against the glare of unfamiliar stars. Not the soft scatter of constellations I remembered. Not the fractured sky above Site Eleven. These burned colder. Closer. Like they weren’t watching from above, but waiting just beneath the skin of the world to break through. The sand beneath me was bone-white. Cold despite the heat bleeding off the horizon like smoke. And beside me… a shadow crouched.Smiling.Damian.Alive.Unchanged.Unwelcome.“Missed me?” His voice curled under my skin, oily and slow.I sat up, every muscle screaming protest. My hands went automatically to my sidearm—gone. My knife—gone. My comms—silent.Of course.“Where are we?” I rasped. He gestured lazily to the horizon. “Home. In a manner of speaking.”“This isn’t Earth.”“Is it?” His smile sharpened. “Funny how borders blur when you tear holes big enough.”I pushed to my feet, unsteady but standing. The sky above us rippled faintly, as if beneath glass. Shapes moved behind it. Watching. Waiting.
