Chapter 7

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah's eyelashes fluttered as she considered Professor Wells's words.

If she hadn't married James, she would've become a practicing therapist by now. Even though her knowledge was still intact, could she really return to her field after all these years?

Professor Wells sensed her hesitation. "There's no rush," he said kindly. "But if you're interested, I'm here to help."

"Thank you, Professor." Sarah felt a wave of warmth. Despite her absence these past years, he still cared about his former student.

After discussing his health and chatting for a while longer, he even invited her to stay for lunch. It was late afternoon by the time she left.

With tomorrow's hunting trip in mind, she picked up her prepared gear and clothing.

The next morning, Scarlett picked her up and drove them to the mountain lodge. They arrived early, finding only a few unfamiliar faces. Since the Reynolds family was hosting the event, it had drawn quite a mixed crowd. Sarah wasn't in the mood for small talk, so she headed straight inside to change and select her rifle.

As she was about to leave the lodge, she heard a familiar voice,

"James, Charlotte! I didn't expect to see you here. I thought this wasn't your kind of thing?"

"Charlotte heard the game hunting was good here. Thought we'd check it out."

Sarah's heart skipped a beat. She opened the door to find James's friend greeting the couple enthusiastically.

Seeing her, he blurted out, "Sarah! What are you doing here?" He immediately regretted it, watching James's face darken.

Sarah had pulled her hair back and wore no makeup. Without her glasses, wearing contacts instead, she stood in fitted hunting gear that gave her an air of confident competence.

James had never seen her like this. His brow furrowed. "What are you doing here?"

Scarlett, now changed into her own gear, shot James a withering look. "What's the problem? You can parade around with your side piece, but Sarah can't come here to change her mood?”

"James didn't mean it like that," Charlotte interjected smoothly. "It's just... they're divorced now. For Sarah to show up here, not knowing how to hunt, clearly following James... it's a bit inappropriate, don't you think?"

As Charlotte spoke, not only did James's expression turn disgusted, but whispers spread through the crowd. The other wealthy guests, all somewhat familiar with James and Sarah's situation, were drawing their own conclusions. James had never publicly acknowledged Sarah during their marriage, and now here she was, seemingly stalking him after their divorce. It looked desperate.

Scarlett exploded. "Listen here, you little-"

Sarah caught her arm, holding her back. She turned to Charlotte and James with a cool smile. "You've got it wrong. I'm here to hunt..."

She loaded her rifle with practiced ease, her tone casual but sharp. "Not only can I hunt, I'm quite good at it. If you don't believe me, just watch..."

Suddenly, the crowd fell silent except for approaching footsteps. Zachary walked toward them, a smile playing on his lips.

He took a state-of-the-art rifle from one of his staff and offered it to Sarah. "The latest model. I'm looking forward to seeing your skills, Miss Sanders."

His blue eyes held an intensity that matched his enigmatic smile, both captivating and dangerous.

Mindy immediately forced a bright, desperate smile and hurried to Mr. Hernandez’s side, looping her arm through his. "Mr. Hernandez! What are you doing here?"He didn’t answer. With a slow, deliberate movement, he peeled her hand off his sleeve as if removing an unwanted insect. His eyes, cold and piercing, locked onto Zachary."Zachary Reynolds,” Hernandez said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "I’ve heard much about the infamous Zachary Reynolds of the East Coast. A pleasure to finally meet—though I wish the circumstances were less... intrusive."Zachary met his gaze with a terrifying calm. He had never met the man, but the moment Mindy had uttered the name "Hernandez," the pieces clicked into place. There was only one Hernandez family powerful enough to command this kind of fear, and they hailed from the coast.Zachary offered a curt nod, his silence speaking volumes.Hernandez didn't seem to care. He turned his attention toward Sarah, his lip curling slightly. "Mr. Reynolds,

Sarah cast a long, searching look at Lucas before turning her gaze toward Mindy.Mindy was white-knuckling her microphone, her mind clearly racing to find an exit strategy. "I... I didn't..." she stammered. The poise she’d displayed during the first two questions had evaporated, replaced by a twitchy, visible guilt that everyone in the room could sense. Before she could dig a deeper hole, her manager stormed onto the stage, shoving the host aside with zero ceremony."That’s enough!" the manager barked, snatching the mic right out of Mindy’s hand. He stepped in front of her like a human shield. "These allegations are pure fiction. I’ve just confirmed with the organizers that this 'gentleman' went rogue with his questions. We have no idea what kind of conspiracy is behind this, but let’s be real—Mindy’s arrival on the East Coast is a threat to certain people’s interests. Clearly, they’ve become desperate enough to play dirty."Without waiting for a rebuttal, the manager hauled Mindy

“However,” Mindy continued after a brief pause, “it wasn’t until I finished this song just now that I truly understood something. Avoidance doesn’t work.”Her voice was steady, but resolute.“Only by bringing danger into the open can people take it seriously. Only then can those who want to contribute prepare themselves mentally and stay alert.“Yes, it can be risky. But every time I see those children smile, every time I hear them reading aloud, I feel genuinely happy.”She looked out over the crowd.“So please don’t let what I’ve shared today stop you from volunteering. Not every place is like that. Thank you. That’s all I wanted to say.”She finished in one breath, as if finally releasing emotions she had kept buried for far too long. The livestream comments flooded with sympathy. Many viewers who had volunteered before echoed her words, confirming the reality she described. The host glanced instinctively toward Zachary in the front row.Yes. These questions had been prepar

What was wrong with the organizers? And this host?Mindy felt a sharp prickle of irritation, but with dozens of lenses tracking her every move, the mask didn't slip. She offered the cameras a soft, practiced smile.“Of course,” Mindy said, her tone smooth as silk. “It’s been a while since I’ve done a formal sit-down. If it takes me a moment to find the words, I hope you’ll all be patient with me.”The host didn't skip a beat, snapping his cue cards to the next page.“This first one comes from a fan in Harbour City. Miss Hicks, you’ve said in the past that you didn’t plan on staying in the country long-term. Why the sudden, unannounced return to the East Coast?”Mindy tilted her head, a lock of hair falling perfectly over her shoulder. “I don’t see it as a mystery,” she replied gently. “And have people forgotten? Before I went abroad, I spent years building my life here. Returning didn't feel like a move—it felt like coming home.”The host offered a thin, professional smile and fl

Inside the study.Leon had just finished his session. It was nothing more than guided psychological suggestion.Sarah stood up, gathered her things, and prepared to leave.“Stay for dinner?” Leon asked.Sarah shot him a cold glance and shook her head lightly.“No need. I’m sick of eating here.”“Sasa,” Leon said, frowning. “Do you really have to be against me?”“Don’t call me that,” she snapped. “It makes me sick.”Leon burst out laughing.“Zachary can call you that, but I can’t?”“That’s my business,” Sarah replied flatly. “It has nothing to do with you. Stop interfering.”Just moments earlier, she had considered whether she should tell Mandy that there were no cameras in the study. But after calming down, she decided against it.If Mandy realized she had been manipulated, it would only hurt her more.“You’re not afraid I’ll lose my temper and lock you up again?” Leon raised a brow.Sarah let out a mocking laugh.“Go ahead. Try.”“Last time, everyone knew you were here,”

Sarah let out a short, mocking laugh.“You don’t get to control Mandy's life.”Leon’s eyes narrowed slightly.“Sarah, the ones who sent her here in the first place were Zachary and Melvin. If anyone was swapped out, it was you. Everything she’s endured was suffered in your place. By that logic, you don’t get to control her either.”Sarah shook her head.“You and I are not the same.”She spoke slowly, deliberately.“Cause and effect still matter to me. She chose to alter herself to look like me. That was the cause. Helping me was the effect. As for you… you’ve wronged her without cause or grievance. What kind of karma is that?”Her gaze hardened.“Leon, one day, everything you take pride in will destroy you.”For the first time, Leon truly lost his temper.“I did all of this for you,” he snapped. “I tried every possible way to get close to you.”Sarah laughed coldly. She reached into her bag and took out a dagger, letting it rest loosely in her hand.“Then what if I said I want t
