Chapter 7

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah's eyelashes fluttered as she considered Professor Wells's words.

If she hadn't married James, she would've become a practicing therapist by now. Even though her knowledge was still intact, could she really return to her field after all these years?

Professor Wells sensed her hesitation. "There's no rush," he said kindly. "But if you're interested, I'm here to help."

"Thank you, Professor." Sarah felt a wave of warmth. Despite her absence these past years, he still cared about his former student.

After discussing his health and chatting for a while longer, he even invited her to stay for lunch. It was late afternoon by the time she left.

With tomorrow's hunting trip in mind, she picked up her prepared gear and clothing.

The next morning, Scarlett picked her up and drove them to the mountain lodge. They arrived early, finding only a few unfamiliar faces. Since the Reynolds family was hosting the event, it had drawn quite a mixed crowd. Sarah wasn't in the mood for small talk, so she headed straight inside to change and select her rifle.

As she was about to leave the lodge, she heard a familiar voice,

"James, Charlotte! I didn't expect to see you here. I thought this wasn't your kind of thing?"

"Charlotte heard the game hunting was good here. Thought we'd check it out."

Sarah's heart skipped a beat. She opened the door to find James's friend greeting the couple enthusiastically.

Seeing her, he blurted out, "Sarah! What are you doing here?" He immediately regretted it, watching James's face darken.

Sarah had pulled her hair back and wore no makeup. Without her glasses, wearing contacts instead, she stood in fitted hunting gear that gave her an air of confident competence.

James had never seen her like this. His brow furrowed. "What are you doing here?"

Scarlett, now changed into her own gear, shot James a withering look. "What's the problem? You can parade around with your side piece, but Sarah can't come here to change her mood?”

"James didn't mean it like that," Charlotte interjected smoothly. "It's just... they're divorced now. For Sarah to show up here, not knowing how to hunt, clearly following James... it's a bit inappropriate, don't you think?"

As Charlotte spoke, not only did James's expression turn disgusted, but whispers spread through the crowd. The other wealthy guests, all somewhat familiar with James and Sarah's situation, were drawing their own conclusions. James had never publicly acknowledged Sarah during their marriage, and now here she was, seemingly stalking him after their divorce. It looked desperate.

Scarlett exploded. "Listen here, you little-"

Sarah caught her arm, holding her back. She turned to Charlotte and James with a cool smile. "You've got it wrong. I'm here to hunt..."

She loaded her rifle with practiced ease, her tone casual but sharp. "Not only can I hunt, I'm quite good at it. If you don't believe me, just watch..."

Suddenly, the crowd fell silent except for approaching footsteps. Zachary walked toward them, a smile playing on his lips.

He took a state-of-the-art rifle from one of his staff and offered it to Sarah. "The latest model. I'm looking forward to seeing your skills, Miss Sanders."

His blue eyes held an intensity that matched his enigmatic smile, both captivating and dangerous.

“Our people have been watching Mrs. Mendes,” Melvin said. “When the hearing starts, we’ll bring her straight in.”But his words had barely landed when a sharp ringtone cut through the air.Melvin glanced at the caller ID and frowned. He shot a look at Sarah, then answered and switched to speaker.“Hello?”“Mr. Sanders?”Panic crackled through the line. “Something’s wrong!”“What is it?”“Mrs. Mendes is gone!”Sarah’s chest tightened. She immediately looked at Melvin, whose voice dropped into a heavy, dangerous calm.“I told you to keep your eyes on her. How did she disappear?”“Mr. Sanders, she was here an hour ago. We just stepped into the restroom—two minutes at most—and when we came back she was gone!”Sarah leaned forward. “What about the boy?”“The boy is missing too.”Sarah’s blood ran cold. She turned to Melvin. “We need to go.”---At the apartment in Steven Avenue, two men paced anxiously as Melvin and Sarah stepped inside.“Mr. Sanders, we didn’t touch anything

At last, the familiar car pulled up. The driver stepped out and opened the back door for her.The moment Sarah saw Melvin’s gentle face, the composure she’d been gripping onto snapped. Warm tears spilled down her cheeks, and before she knew it she was sobbing uncontrollably.Melvin froze, startled. He hurriedly pulled out a handkerchief.“Sarah, what happened? What did Dr. Xavier say? Did he threaten you? Tell me, I’ll have someone bring him back right now.”“No…” Sarah stopped him quickly. After forcing herself to steady her breathing, she handed him the folder.“You’ll understand once you read it.”Confused, Melvin took the documents. As he flipped through the pages, his complexion darkened with every line.“How is this possible…”“When Uncle David had his accident, I was there for everything,” he said urgently. “The autopsy, the scene report, everything said ‘accidental death.’ Even the police wrote it that way.”His voice faltered.“But back then, I didn’t have that kind of

“They took your child… they are threatening you again.”Sarah’s eyes darkened. “Who are they?”To her surprise, Dr. Xavier only shook his head. His expression was dazed and helpless.“I honestly don’t know who those people are.”“That doesn’t make sense,” she said coldly.“Please, you have to believe me!” he blurted out. “If I knew who they were, I would’ve told you straight away. I know Zachary Reynolds and Melvin Sanders are on your side. In East Coast, no one dares touch a man protected by Mr. Reynolds. But I really don’t know. Even the threats back then—the emails, the messages—they were all sent to me anonymously. I never saw a face.”While he was still rambling in panic, Sarah cut him off with her next question.“What did they do to you this time?”Dr. Xavier’s expression twisted with pain.“Miss Sanders… you know my son needed a heart transplant.”He swallowed hard before continuing. “One afternoon he came home from school with a ‘gift’ someone gave him. He told me the ma

Sarah froze, her pulse quickening in shock. Why would Dr. Xavier be connected to the Sanders family? And the autopsy report he mentioned… whose was it?Her father’s?“Keep talking.” Her voice was ice.“The first falsified autopsy report was David Sanders’s.”Her heart dropped to her stomach. So it was her father.Dr. Xavier opened his briefcase and pulled out two folders, sliding them across the table.“The one on the left is the report submitted to the police. The one on the right is the real one. I know David Sanders was your father. You should see it for yourself.”Sarah picked up both documents, her fingers trembling. She had read the first report countless times, searching for any sign, any hint that her father’s death wasn’t just an accident. But no matter how many times she read it, the conclusion was always the same: blunt-force trauma. Accidental. No foul play. She set the first file aside and lifted the second one.Just a few sheets of paper, yet it felt impossi

“Will this evidence be enough to put Vivian away for good?” Sarah asked quietly.Melvin paused, reading her tone before answering carefully.“If we can find the video and the person who filmed it is willing to testify in court, then yes. But… are you sure you want to go through with it now? You sound eager.”Sarah didn’t answer right away. Instead, she picked up a pair of pruning shears and began trimming the flowers beside her.“Yes,” she said flatly. “She’s had it easy for far too long. I’ve had a lot of time to think while I was stuck with Leon. Even if we don’t take her down all at once, we can keep building the case. Let her rot in prison while we stack sentence after sentence. Someone who’s done so much damage… deserves consequences.”Melvin’s expression darkened. “There’s one more thing. The coroner who handled Tina Mendes’s case, he’s willing to testify. But he asked to meet with you personally first. I think he’s expecting something in return.”Sarah raised an eyebrow. “

Mandy let out a bitter chuckle. “If you really did your homework, then you should already know my mother was moved a long time ago.”She looked up, blood still at the corners of her mouth, and smiled through it all.“I’ll save you the trouble. My mom’s gone. My brother and sister too. You won’t find them. I know who you are, Leon. I know how powerful you are. But in East Coast, if Zachary Reynolds says he’ll protect someone, he will. No one can touch them.”With that, she closed her eyes.Exhaustion crashed down on her like a wave. The fear, the lies, the constant anxiety of being exposed. It had finally caught up to her. But at least she’d pulled it off. She had succeeded in replacing Sarah.Leon stared at her trembling, bloodied form. Fury exploded in his chest. He kicked her hard. She let out a pained gasp but then she laughed.A wild, broken laugh that echoed off the cold basement walls. The force of it made her gums bleed. When she grinned again, her teeth were stained cri
