Chapter 3

Author: Shirley
The iron door of the dungeon slammed shut behind me.

I was so cold I could barely feel anything, my body wracked with shivers.

I don't know how long I lay there.

I'd always been afraid of cold, confined spaces. I remembered how, right after I became his mate, Kaelen had a sprawling, open-air garden built just for me, designed for the widest views and the best light. He said he would build me anything I desired.

Thinking back on it now, it all felt like a dream.

I was startled awake by the creak of the dungeon door. A guard stood there, his face impassive. "The Alpha says if this happens again, the punishment will be more severe."

Leaning against the stone wall, I staggered out.

There won't be a next time.

Soon, I will make him disappear from my world completely.

Kaelen was waiting at the dungeon entrance, his expression a cold mask. "That's enough time. Remember, this was just a simple punishment."

"Tonight is the annual Pack Alliance Gala," he said, holding out his hand. "As my mate, your attendance is mandatory."

I looked at him, and for the first time, I didn't take his hand.

At seven o'clock that evening, the Black Moon Pack's limousine pulled up to the Alliance Hall. I was wearing a black evening gown Kaelen had sent for me. Then, at the entrance to the ballroom, I saw Cassandra.

She was dressed in a magnificent silver gown, and around her neck was a dazzling necklace—the Moonstone Jewel, a sacred artifact that was supposed to belong to the Luna.

I was wearing a simple string of pearls.

All the wolves were whispering, their eyes darting between Cassandra and me.

"Kaelen!" Cassandra called out sweetly, hurrying toward us. "You're here!"

She linked her arm through Kaelen's other arm as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Kaelen didn't push her away.

I stopped and looked at him. "She's here too. Why did you even bother bringing me?"

His expression was nonchalant. "I wasn't planning on bringing her, but she's never seen an event like this and wanted to experience it." He paused, his tone casual. "Estelle, don't be so possessive. Show some grace."

The wolves around us began to murmur.

I heard their whispers:

"Is that Omega wearing the Luna's necklace?"

"The Black Moon's future Luna looks so worn out."

"I heard she was locked in the dungeons recently…"

"An Alpha's mate being upstaged by an Omega. How humiliating."

I took a deep breath and kept a smile plastered on my face. He hadn't considered my feelings for a single second, letting me become a laughingstock for all to see.

But it didn't matter. They wouldn't be laughing for much longer.

Midway through the banquet, the host announced the traditional Moon Hunt Challenge. It was an ancient ritual for werewolvenobility to display their strength and status. By tradition, the Luna was granted the privilege of the first pick of the prey.

But Cassandra spoke up in a saccharine voice, "Could I try? I've never participated in such a noble event before…" She looked at Kaelen, her eyes full of pitiful hope.

The host looked at me awkwardly. "According to tradition, the future Luna should go first…"

"Let her have it," Kaelen cut him off. "Estelle, be the bigger person. You are the Luna, after all."

The entire hall fell silent.

An Alpha, forcing his own mate to yield the Luna's privilege to an Omega. It was an unprecedented humiliation.

I stood up, my voice steady. "I refuse."

Cassandra's eyes immediately reddened. "I'm sorry… I shouldn't have been so presumptuous… I'm just a humble Omega…" She choked up and stood. "I'll leave now. I won't disturb anyone else…"

Kaelen's face darkened. My refusal had made him lose face in front of all the nobles. He grabbed my wrist. "Estelle, don't test my patience here. It's just one chance. Your status won't change because of it. As a Luna, you should be above this kind of petty jealousy."

All eyes were on me. There was mockery, pity, and confusion.

A Luna who lets an Omega walk all over her. A woman who couldn't even protect her own privileges.

"Experience what, exactly?" I sneered. "A lesson in trampling on a Luna's dignity?"

Cassandra cried even harder. "I really didn't mean it like that… Estelle, you've really misunderstood me…" She turned to leave, and Kaelen immediately chased after her, leaving me alone on the stage to bear the weight of everyone's stares.

But I had nothing left to care about. I would be leaving this nightmare soon enough.

I walked off the stage and left without a single look back.

Cassandra knelt by the fountain, her body trembling.Everyone was gone, leaving her all alone. She slowly crawled to the edge of the fountain and saw her reflection in the water.Who was that?A woman with graying hair, a face covered in scars, and eyes as empty as a dead fish."No… that's not me…" she cried, shaking her head. "It's not me…"But the reflection didn't lie.The beautiful Cassandra was gone.In her place was a monster, consumed by hatred and desire. She remembered how Estelle used to be—elegant, powerful, full of life. And what about her? She had sold her soul to climb the ladder of power."I could have had a Beta who truly loved me…" she murmured to herself. "I could have lived a simple, happy life…"But it was too late for regrets. She had ruined Estelle's life, and she had ruined her own."Estelle… I'm sorry…" she wept at the fountain. "I was wrong… I was so wrong…"But no one was there to hear her confession. In the Alpha's Hall of the Black Moon Pack, Kaelen sat on h

I was in my studio, designing a new Moonstone necklace, when a guard's voice came through the intercom."Miss Estelle, Alpha Kaelen is here again.""Tell him to get lost," I said without looking up. "I don't want to see him.""But…" the guard's voice sounded strange. "He's brought someone with him. A woman. She looks… odd."I frowned. What game was Kaelen playing now?"I'll be down."I walked out of the villa and saw a sight that will be seared into my memory for the rest of my life.Kaelen stood outside the gate, so gaunt he was almost unrecognizable, his eyes hollowed out, like a walking corpse.Kneeling beside him was a woman—Cassandra. But was it the Cassandra I knew? Her head had been shaved, and her body was covered in scars. She knelt on the ground, her body trembling uncontrollably."Estelle!" Kaelen saw me, and a crazed light flashed in his eyes. "You've finally come to see me!""Look!" he said, pointing at Cassandra. "I brought her! I wanted you to see what she looks like now

"No! I don't believe it!"Kaelen suddenly exploded, lunging toward me with a crazed light in his eyes."Estelle is mine! She will always be my mate!"He tried to grab my wrist, to force his mark onto my neck.I reacted instantly, slashing at his face with my claws.Bloody scratches appeared on his cheek."Get away from me!" I snapped. "You have no right to touch me!"Liam immediately stepped in front of me, his Alpha aura flaring."Kaelen, you've lost your mind.""Lost my mind?" Kaelen wiped the blood from his cheek and laughed, a strange, unsettling sound. "Yes, I have! I'm nothing without her!"He stared at me, his eyes filled with desperation and pain."Estelle, you say you don't love me, but I know you're lying to yourself!"I looked at him calmly, without a flicker of emotion."I'm not lying to myself, Kaelen."I spoke slowly, my voice as calm as a frozen lake."I truly don't love you. Not at all."To make him finally understand, I deliberately opened our broken mental link.I let

His phone suddenly rang. It was Marcus."Alpha, I've found Estelle's location!"Marcus's voice snapped Kaelen back to reality."Where?""She's still at the Moonlit Tavern. She's having dinner with Alpha Liam and his parents.""I'm on my way."Kaelen hung up and ran toward the tavern like a man possessed. This was his chance, perhaps his only chance. He had to see her. He had to apologize. The second floor of the tavern was quiet.Kaelen followed a familiar scent to a private room. She was inside. His Estelle.Kaelen took a deep breath and pushed open the door.Warm light spilled across a dining table where four people were enjoying a pleasant meal.I was sitting next to Liam, a relaxed smile on my face.Though I was still recovering, my spirit was in a much better place than it ever had been with Kaelen."Estelle…"Kaelen's voice was hoarse.Everyone turned to look at him.The moment I saw him, my smile vanished, my expression freezing."Kaelen? What are you doing here?"Liam immediate

"Gods, Kaelen! Are you alive?"Derek's voice, frantic and terrified, echoed in his ears.Kaelen felt someone shaking his shoulders forcefully."Call a healer, now! I can barely find a pulse!"Another Alpha's voice, strained with panic.A blinding white light forced Kaelen's eyes open.He was in the Black Moon Pack's medical wing, hooked up to various machines.Derek and his other two Alpha friends were crowded around the bed, their faces etched with worry."You almost died, you know that?" Derek said, grabbing his hand. "When we found you at the bar, you weren't breathing."Kaelen tried to speak, but his throat was too parched to make a sound."Water…" he rasped.Derek immediately poured a glass and helped him drink."Kaelen, you can't do this," Derek's voice choked. "You're our friend, the heir to the Black Moon Pack. You can't just waste away over one she-wolf.""She isn't just a she-wolf," Kaelen said weakly. "She's my life.""Enough!" Derek slammed his fist on the table. "Estelle d

"Estelle…" he whispered to the empty room.
