Chapter 2

Author: Grogan
The death certificate my friend helped me to forge would take effect in three days.

Just as I hung up, Tony walked in.

As always, the first thing he did was come up behind me and wrap his arms around me.

“Still waiting for me? Why didn’t you eat the cheesecake?”

There was a faint scent of cheap roses on him.

I smelled it two hours ago at the club. It was Jane’s perfume.

A wave of nausea surged up from my stomach, leaving me to turn my head away and retch.

Tony immediately gently rubbed my back, his voice tense with concern.

“It is this bad? Was everything okay at your checkup?”

I pushed him away and said nothing.

My reaction clearly caught his attention. After I finished throwing up, he tightened his arms around me again, pinning me so I couldn't struggle or pull away.

“Are you mad? I said you’re the one I love most. If Jane weren’t carrying my child, I wouldn’t even look at her.”

Is that so?

If he really didn’t think much of her, then how did she end up pregnant?

However, I didn’t expose him and just stared quietly at my toes.

“Don’t be upset. I prepared a surprise gift for you.”

He turned and went back to the car. Not long after, he returned with a beautiful bouquet of lilies.

After handing it to me, he started making a few phone calls.

My heart sank the moment I saw the card tucked between the petals.

The bouquet was meant for Jane.

He must have noticed my mood and panicked. So, before he had the chance to give them to her, he took the lilies and used them to brush me off.

He didn’t even check the card the florist had placed inside.

I looked at the man smiling at me while talking on the phone, and all I felt was sadness.

“Something came up with Jane again. Since she’s in her first trimester, her mood isn’t great, and she’s been throwing up a lot.”

He finally hung up and shrugged, as if talking about the weather.

“I might have to go see her tonight… Oh, it’s here!”

The doorbell interrupted him.

His assistant came in, carrying gift boxes and stacking them into a small pile.

“When I picked up the flowers, I also had them prepare some other gifts.”

Tony looked at me with satisfaction, as if expecting a happy reaction.

I said flatly, “Oh.”

“I know what you like. Don’t be upset.”

He sighed helplessly and patted my hair.

“Be good. Sleep on your own tonight. With Jane newly pregnant, she’s more fragile and sensitive. That’s why she’s relying on me more. If anything comes up, call me.”

“I’ve already planned it out. After she gives birth, I won’t see her again. I’ll let you raise the child, and the four of us can live well together. That’s a good plan, right?”

His tone was like he was coaxing an unreasonable child.

Calmly, I placed the bouquet of lilies on top of the pile of gifts.

“Since she needs them more, give them to her.”

A look of delight instantly spread across Tony’s face.

“Astrid, I knew you were gentle and mature! You really are the one I love most, and the best wife in the world!

“After Jane gives birth, I’ll make it up to you a hundred times over!”

He excitedly kissed my forehead, then left with the gifts and his assistant.

I watched the luxury car drive away and let out a cold laugh.

Jane did need those gifts more than me.

After all, the dead can’t take designer bags or clothes with them.

So I’ll give it all to her, including Tony.

He froze, confused. “What do you mean by that?”I turned slightly, glancing just ahead. Our confrontation had drawn attention. Mr. Williams, who had just presented my award, was now approaching, flanked by security.“Professor Green, you seem to be having some trouble. Do you require any assistance?”I bowed slightly, composed and respectful.“This gentleman insists I am his wife. He has threatened to use legal measures to take my son and force me to return to his country.”Mr. Williams’ expression froze. After all, everyone knew that a researcher’s work followed their nationality.Frowning, he turned to Tony, his authority palpable.“Professor Green is our nation’s highest-level distinguished expert, recipient of the National Merit Award. Her contributions are irreplaceable! “Your statements just now constitute a serious threat and defamation of our top scientist. Your actions will be treated as an attempt to steal our nation’s cutting-edge secrets! I can have you arrested

Time flew. Soon, three years had passed. I was living peacefully and fully in a foreign country with my son.Having reclaimed my career in scientific research, the years stolen by marriage and betrayal were slowly filled with professional achievements.Today was a milestone.A cutting-edge research project I had led was being awarded the nation’s highest honor. The ceremony was at the National Conference Center, and the head of state himself would present the medal.I was backstage in a tailored gown, waiting for my turn, when my phone buzzed. A message from Mia appeared.[Astrid, that lunatic Tony found your fake grave. He had the coffin dug up on the spot. When he saw it empty, with just a handful of withered flowers, he started looking for you everywhere. Be careful!]I tapped my reply. [Don’t worry.]I was no longer the Astrid of three years ago.My achievements and my status were my armor, solid enough to protect my son and me.A staff member leaned close. “Professor

Jane was rushed into the operating room, and soon her heartbeat stopped.Just like Astrid, there were two deaths.Tony was sentenced for assault with intent to kill. The Baldino family spent a fortune pulling strings and leveraging every connection to get him bailed out. When he emerged, Tony was completely broken. He spent every day inside our villa, clutching bottles of alcohol, laughing and crying at my photos.“Astrid… Honey…”His hands trembled as he touched my face in the photo. Tears poured down in heavy streams.“I’m sorry. I deserve to die! Should I go down to you and the baby? Wait for me. I’m coming…”He finished the last bottle of liquor, swaying unsteadily, and walked into the nursery that had long been prepared.Pale blue walls, cloud-shaped lamps, a crib with a mobile…Everything had been chosen together.I had touched my slightly rounded belly back then, smiling with contentment, saying we would give our baby the best of the world. Now, the baby was gone, a

Rain began to pour. Tony kneeled in the puddle outside the hospital, motionless.A sudden umbrella appeared above his head. Thinking it was Mia, he looked up sharply, only to find it was Jane. The small spark of hope in his heart was instantly extinguished.“Tony, don’t be like this. Even though Astrid is gone, you still have me and our child.”Jane reached out to help him up. “From now on, I’ll stay by your side. The three of us can be a family.”Tony shook her hand off and glared at her, his eyes bloodshot. “Who do you think you are? How dare you mention her?”Jane trembled in fear. The umbrella slipped from her hand.Rain instantly soaked her hair and shoulders, making her look even more pitiful.“Tony, I know you’re hurting, but I truly love you. Otherwise, why would I be willing to carry your child?”Tony looked as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world. His expression twisted as he suddenly shoved her away.“Love? If it weren’t for that strong drink at the club

“No, that’s impossible! Nothing could have happened to Astrid!”Tony clutched his head and dropped to his knees, unable to accept it.His eyes were bloodshot as he gripped the head nurse’s arm.“Where are their bodies?! If I don’t see my wife and child, I won’t believe they’re dead!”The head nurse looked at him and sighed.“Mrs. Astrid and her baby's bodies have already been claimed and buried by our attending physician. Dr. Holdsworth was Ms. Green’s close friend. She was very upset while handling the arrangements and even took leave because of it.”Mia… was Astrid’s best friend!“On what grounds?!”Tony completely lost control. “I’m Astrid’s husband! What right does Mia have to handle my wife and child’s bodies over me?! How could your hospital let her take them? Do you believe I can shut this place down overnight?!”He roared without restraint as more people gathered around. The head nurse forcefully shook off his hand. The last trace of politeness in her eyes disappeared
