Chapter 4

Author: Mad Gou
The night before the Four Families' gathering, the senior members of the Lehman Family finally learned that Morrison intended to bring Sarah.

Reese, one of the senior members, found Morrison and tried to stop him. "Boss, Sarah has no useful skills and no family connections. How can she represent the Lehman Family at the gathering?"

Morrison sat on the leather sofa, idly turning a crystal ornament in his hand. "Celine was an outsider too. You let her attend. Why not Sarah?"

Reese sighed. "After Celine joined the Lehman Family, she helped secure shipping routes to Australia and brought the Family enormous profits. Of course she's qualified."

Henrik spoke up as well. "Exactly. Boss, if you like Sarah, buy her jewelry and watches. We wouldn't say a word. But Celine hasn't done anything wrong. Stripping her of her place at the gathering like this will make her a laughingstock among the Four Families."

I smiled bitterly. Over the years, I had done everything I could to earn the right to stand beside Morrison.

That meant spending night after night studying business management.

I had also traded on years of favors with my superiors to help the Lehman Family expand.

Everyone had seen how hard I worked.

Everyone except Morrison.

His expression didn't waver. "Who says she hasn't done anything wrong?"

He raised a hand, and the bodyguard immediately handed files to the two senior members. "Celine has been secretly contacting other families, giving up port warehouses, and dumping core assets at a loss. Isn't that wrong enough?"

The senior members' expressions changed.

I grabbed the files from the table and flipped through a few pages. My face went pale. "I didn't sign these. Why is my signature stamp on them...?"

Wait.

I looked up at Morrison, fury blazing in my eyes.

It was him!

My signature stamp was in my safe. Only the two of us knew the combination.

Morrison showed no guilt whatsoever. He stared back, his eyes cold. "You have two choices. One: submit to a Family investigation. All your activities and business dealings will be suspended until the truth is uncovered.

"Two: let Sarah take your place at the gathering, while you attend as a maid. That will be your punishment."

Every one of those documents was forged. An investigation would clear my name.

But the process would take at least ten days.

I didn't have that kind of time.

The gathering was tomorrow. Tomorrow, I could finally capture Luca, a man who had been on the run for four years.

Luca was only risking this return because the Bauer Family planned to publicly announce their next heir and the new internal power structure at the gathering.

If I didn't catch him this time, there was no telling if another chance would ever come.

I had no choice.

Under everyone's scrutinizing gaze, I forced the words out. "I choose option two."

That was as good as admitting to Morrison's accusations.

I was admitting that I had secretly contacted other families, given up port warehouses, and dumped core assets.

The senior members stormed out of the mansion.

Even Reese, who had always been kind to me, looked at me with nothing but disappointment.

I closed my eyes, sick with humiliation.

Morrison walked over and stood in front of me, looking down. "All you had to do was choose the investigation. They'd have found out soon enough that those documents were fake. And yet you chose to accept these charges, just so you could attend the gathering.

"Well done, Celine."

I opened my eyes slowly. "Isn't that exactly what you wanted? You want everyone to hate me, so you can make room for Sarah."

Rage smoldered in Morrison's eyes, along with something I couldn't read.

It almost looked like grief.

But I was the one who had been betrayed.

What did he have to grieve about?

Morrison's voice was low and vicious. "I'm not the one pushing you away. You've been walking toward someone else all along."

My eyes flew wide.

In that moment, I wondered whether Morrison somehow knew about Luca.

But I never got the chance to ask.

Morrison stormed out of the mansion.

Morrison charged forward and drove his fist into Klaus's face. "Who the hell are you? What gives you the right to touch her?"Klaus, caught off guard, took the hit square on. His first instinct was to swing back. But I was faster. The crack of my palm across Morrison's face rang through the air. "What do you think you're doing? Why are you hitting my boyfriend?"Morrison went rigid. His heart seized with a bitter, unbearable ache."Celine, you hit me? For him?"He's your boyfriend, so what does that make me? Have you forgotten the days we loved each other? Have you forgotten our promise to get married?"Pain and despair swam in his eyes. His hand trembled as he reached for mine.I didn't hesitate. I stepped back. "I remember. But I also remember you bringing a woman into our bedroom. I remember you in one woman's arms after another. I remember you calling me the housekeeper. I remember you telling everyone that you never loved me."My voice was ice-cold, like a blade splitting his ches

I was granted a two-year leave.I traveled to a remote village and rented a farm.Every morning I fed the sheep and chickens, weeded the garden, and patched up the fences. In the afternoon, I brought whatever eggs we didn't need to the neighbors or sold them at the market in town.In the evenings, I curled up on the couch with the TV on.Life was slow and easy. One day, same as always, I sold my eggs at the produce store in town and picked up some supplies. On the way home, my truck ran out of fuel and got stuck in a mud rut.I called a tow company. With no nearby landmarks to give them, the tow company struggled to pinpoint my location. The sky grew darker.Just when I was running out of ideas, the rumble of a truck engine drifted over from down the road.My spirits lifted. I hurried to the roadside and waved."Hi! My truck's out of fuel. Could I borrow some?"The truck stopped.A young but ruggedly handsome man stepped out. He looked at me with an intent, quiet gaze.I smiled warmly.

The one who loved him swore she didn't.The one who didn't swore she did.Morrison found it absurd. The papers crumpled in his fist with a dry crackle.Under Sarah's terrified gaze, he said, ice in his voice, "You like money that much? Fine. I'll make sure you never earn another cent for the rest of your life. If you beg, no one will dare give you even a penny."You'll spend every day in poverty and fear, until you starve."The bodyguard dragged Sarah away without missing a beat. Her pleas grew fainter. "Morrison, I was wrong. I'll never do it again."Please, let me go..."Morrison didn't spare her another thought. He got in his car and drove straight to the federal field office. He sat in the office of Special Agent in Charge David Michel and leveraged the Lehman Family's influence to demand Celine's whereabouts.Michel had no choice. He ordered Celine's file brought in.Morrison waited, nervous and uneasy. In his head, he rehearsed what he would say. Should he apologize first, or beg

Morrison's mind reeled as if struck by something heavy. When the ringing faded, the memories that jealousy had buried began to surface one by one.Celine couldn't handle spicy food, but she had tried dish after dish just to share a meal with him.Morrison had felt sorry for her. "You don't have to force yourself to do things you don't enjoy for my sake."Celine, face flushed and drenched in sweat, sipped her milk and laughed. "I want to be part of your world. I want to know you just a little bit better."At the time, he had thought: You don't need to come to me. You've already filled every corner of my life....He remembered how, during those hectic days, all he had to do was look over his shoulder, and there she would be, her eyes shining. She would clench her fist and mouth the words: "You've got this. I'll always be here."...He remembered the birthday the year before, when Celine clasped her hands to make a wish."To be with Morrison forever."Not even death could keep us apart."

Morrison's hand hung frozen in midair. A long time passed before he whispered to himself, "I never loved you either."Celine, I never loved you either!"His expression was terrifying, like a beast about to pounce. The guests around him instinctively stepped back.Only Sarah approached slowly and took his hand. "What's wrong?"Morrison's dull gaze drifted to Sarah. After a moment, he pulled her into a tight embrace, lying to himself. "Sarah is the one I love. The only person I've ever truly loved is Sarah."Sarah, I love you..."Sarah, do you love me?"Sarah dropped her gaze, guilt flickering in her eyes. But then she noticed the enormous gemstone ring on her finger and nodded firmly. "Of course I love you."Morrison closed his eyes, forcing back the tears before they could fall.He thought: Celine, it's not like I have to love you.The senior family members asked whether he really intended to marry Sarah.Morrison couldn't keep up the lie.He clutched his head in agony. Pain washed ove

My handler read the arrest warrant for Luca Bauer aloud. When he finished, he walked over to the heads of the Four Families with a smile and explained the situation.I escorted Luca toward the exit.Morrison cut through the crowd and grabbed my arm."Celine, what is this? Why are you helping the police arrest Luca?"My colleague rushed over to back me up."Mr. Lehman, let go! Or we'll charge you with assaulting a federal agent."Morrison's eyes widened. "You're a cop?"I waved my colleague off and handed Luca to her, then turned to Morrison. My voice was professional and even. "Yes. I'm a federal agent."Luca committed a serious crime years ago. The federal government has been pursuing him ever since. I'm sorry for disrupting your gathering, but cooperating with the government is every taxpayer's duty. I hope you understand."Morrison stared at the unfamiliar look in my eyes, and a broken laugh escaped him.His jaw clenched. "Your people sure have creative methods. Faking a relationshi
