Richard followed my gaze.

His hand flinched back on instinct and disappeared into his pocket.

"Elise."

He steadied his breathing, and when he looked at me again his eyes were full of apology.

"I've been afraid to tell you. The jeweler got your initial wrong and cut a C instead of an E."

"The Jew botched the job and it was my fault too. I was so excited I put it on the second I got it and never looked closely."

He gave a rueful smile, his tone both nervous and earnest.

"But don't worry. I've alre

Leon was in front of me at once.I couldn't help turning to look back.Richard held a gun, the barrel pressed to his own temple.Even at this distance his thoughts came through clear, soaked in despair.[Elise won't forgive me. She means to cut me off for good.][No! I'm keeping her, whatever it costs! Even if it costs my life!]"Elise, what will it take for you to forgive me?""I'll give you all of the Marlowe family's territory! Call it my apology. I'm begging you, come back to me!""If you won't, I'd rather die right here!"His face was soaked in tears of regret, and the words he screamed carried the taste of blood."You've become a laughingstock," I said. "Your seat as Don was already hanging by a thread."I spread my hands. "And here you are, wasting your time, begging me. The other Dons are ruthless wolves. Do you really think you can hold your territory?""I can't speak for the rest." I fired my last shot. "But I'd bet my life that right now, my father is swallowing your territo

Richard seemed like a different man.He had lost a lot of weight, and the suit that used to fit him hung loose now.The biggest change was in his eyes. What kind of eyes were those: cold, glazed, as ghastly as the vacant stare of a slaughtered sheep. He stared at Leon's hand where it had touched my hair, the muscles of his face twitching beyond his control."Take your filthy hand off her."Leon frowned and finished tucking the strand into place. He stepped forward and put himself in front of me, like a knight guarding a princess. His muscles drew tight, the lines of them showing through his fitted shirt."Richard Marlowe. Watch your tone."Richard's breathing was heavy as a broken bellows."You dare talk to me like that? I'm Don Marlowe!""I'll give you three seconds. Step away from my wife. Step away from Elise."I leaned out from behind Leon. "I'm not your wife."Leon smiled and shrugged. "You heard her."Richard lunged like a man gone mad, his right fist driving straight at Leon's f

That unfinished wedding became the joke of the entire East Coast.Everyone knew the Don of the Marlowe family had been caught in bed on his own wedding day.Once a Don became a punchline, his ruin wasn't far behind. The mafia respected only strength, and no one honored a clown.I left it all behind and boarded a cruise to clear my head."Don't you think the sea at night looks like the night sky?"Leon stood on the deck, looking out at the water, and asked it with a smile. The night wind off the sea was strong, and I shivered without meaning to.Leon took off his scarf and wound it gently around my neck. "The wind's strong at night. Don't catch a cold."The scarf carried his warmth and a faint trace of cologne.Feeling its warmth, looking into his eyes, I went briefly lost.In my last life, Richard died saving me, and I spent the rest of my years steeped in guilt.Through all those long years, it was Leon who stayed beside me.He never asked for anything. He simply stayed, quietly, at m

Charlotte was hiding in the bathroom, naked.A towel someone had grabbed was thrown over her, and she stared at the crowd, screaming without stop. She sounded like a cheap squeaky chicken toy.Eileen rubbed her eyes like she couldn't believe them, then erupted."Charlotte? You're sleeping with her? Did you forget who got your father killed?"Richard had collapsed to the floor, great beads of sweat rolling off his forehead."I'll only say this once. Shut up."My father gave Charlotte a cold glance, then turned his eyes to Richard."Don Marlowe, you owe me an explanation." He paused, a grim smile showing. "I'd like it to be a reasonable one.""I know it's hard to explain, but it isn't what it looks like. It's her. She set me up!"Richard shuffled forward on his knees and grabbed the hem of my dress."She burst in and started taking her clothes off. I didn't lay a finger on her!""Elise, I swear, I never betrayed you! You have to believe me!"[I have to stick to the story that Charlotte t

The door had barely cracked when Richard's hand shot out to hold it.The very next second, his face appeared in the gap, his shirt still unbuttoned, that granite-hard chest bare.He fought to steady his breathing and forced out a thin smile."Elise, why did you bring everyone up here?""I haven't finished changing. Give me a few minutes and I'll be right out."His words were all polite formalities, yet panic churned inside him, desperate for everyone to turn and leave at once..I stared at the teasing mark on the side of his neck.It was fresh and red, a mark Charlotte had just left on him.At the same time, his thoughts shrilled like an air-raid siren.[That was close! Good thing I move fast, or this all would have fallen apart.][Charlotte's still naked, hiding in the bathroom. I cannot let them in.]Eileen frowned at him. "Why are you talking to us through a crack in the door? Pull yourself together and open it.""No!" Richard barked on instinct. Then his eyes darted, and he hurried

"Of course. I'd never let myself off either."Richard raised his glass high and announced it to the room.In a well-cut suit, he was handsome as a Greek statue. He smiled without a sound, looking quietly pleased with himself. The musicians struck up a mandolin, and the guests sang old Sicilian love songs and stamped their feet. When the song ended, the applause went on and on.If I couldn't hear Richard's thoughts, I really would have believed this was a happy wedding. Then the doors of the hall swung open.Charlotte appeared in front of everyone like an exclamation point. She wore a white couture gown, the long train dragging the floor, a bouquet cradled in her hands. She looked more like the bride than I did.The guests murmured, their eyes moving back and forth between us.She walked straight to Richard, leaned to his ear, and said something.Richard stepped back, all disgust, and waved at the guards across the room."You're not welcome here. Where's security? I gave specific orders
