Chapter 4

Autor: Little Shrimp
She lay in a pool of blood.

Her clothes had been torn away, her arms and legs brutally shattered. She was barely recognizable as a human being.

Yet when I pushed open the wardrobe door, she still used her final breath to whisper to me,

"Faith... live... Run..."

Those were the last words Anne ever spoke to me.

The memory froze there, cut short by my overwhelming resistance and unbearable pain.

The entire square fell silent.

Then came a tidal wave of outrage.

No one had expected that even after being tortured into such a horrific state, Anne was still trying to protect me.

"Oh my God! She was dying, and she was still telling her to run!"

"This Faith is unbelievable! Anne gave everything for her, and this is how she repays her?"

"How does someone like that deserve to live?"

With no way to vent their rage on me, some of the crowd turned their fury on my parents instead.

"You raised a daughter like this! You're no better!"

They began beating my mother and father.

My parents could only curl up and shield their heads as fists and kicks rained down on them.

I closed my eyes.

I couldn't bear to watch.

Daniel collapsed to his knees, sobbing so hard he could barely move.

"Anne adored you... Even with her dying breath, she was still worried about you...

"Faith... how could you do this to her?"

The excessive voltage had completely destroyed my spine.

I could no longer control my body.

All I could do was slump helplessly against the chair as tears streamed down my face.

My lips parted.

In a barely intelligible voice, I managed to force out a single sentence.

"I'm sorry..."

"...the time..."

"...hasn't come yet..."

The crowd below didn't catch the second half of my words.

They assumed it was nothing more than a hypocritical apology from a dying woman.

"Hypocrite!"

"What good is sorry now? Just die already!"

As curses echoed through the square, the memory replay above shifted to another scene.

At the time, I had not yet been arrested for destroying evidence, but news of my refusal to reveal the killer's identity had already spread.

The families of the other victims came looking for me.

More than a dozen of them gathered outside my door.

One after another, they dropped to their knees before me, crying and pleading.

"Miss Dean, we're begging you! Please tell us who that monster is!"

"We'll get on our knees and beg if we have to!"

Anyone who witnessed that scene would have felt nothing but heartbreak and sympathy, yet I rejected them and turned to leave.

The moment I did, a burlap sack was thrown over my head, and I was dragged away.

When I woke up again, I found myself tied up inside an abandoned warehouse.

Desperate to force the killer's identity out of me, they resorted to torture.

They severed the tendons in my wrists and ankles.

They used razor blades to slice strips of flesh from my body.

They even buried me alive, leaving only my head exposed above the ground.

The child growing inside me died because of it.

I nearly died as well.

But from beginning to end, I repeated only the same words.

"I'm sorry... Just wait a little longer..."

The audience erupted into discussion.

"My God... that's horrifying. They never should have taken the law into their own hands."

"But she deserved it! She protected a murderer!"

"Still... this should have been handled through proper legal channels."

"I don't know... the things she said at the end sounded like she was hiding something."

"Or maybe she's just a selfish ingrate making excuses to save herself."

At that moment, the machinery on the Judgment Platform emitted a piercing burst of static.

She gave her life to expose a vast organ trafficking network. This is the proof."He held up the listening device."It contains the complete recordings. It proves everything."He handed the device over to the police. Then the recordings were played publicly. As the conversations echoed across the square through the loudspeakers, shock swept through the crowd. Those who cursed me and beat my parents, all lowered their heads in shame.Even the families of the victims who tortured me in their desperation fell to their knees in the square, unable to rise.My paren

"Three days at the earliest. The authorities are cracking down hard right now. We can't afford to take risks.""What did the hospital say?""They're pushing for delivery and offering a high price, but we need to be careful."Daniel's hands froze over the keyboard because he recognized those voices. They belonged to his parents. He suppressed his shock and forced himself to keep listening. The further the recordings progressed, the more conversations like these emerged.Bit by bit, the outline of a vast organ trafficking operation came into focus. And at the center of it all were his parents.A chill spread through Daniel's entire body.It felt as though he fell into an icy abyss.Part of him wanted to shut off the recording immediately, to pretend he never heard any of it.Then Anne's voice suddenly rang out from the speakers, filled with outrage."How could you do something like this? It's illegal! It's murder!"Her voice trembled."I'm going to the police! I'm going to tell them ever

"The handwriting... it's a match. We can confirm it belongs to the doctor."A wave of shock swept across the square. The police opened the journal in full view of the cameras. The first page was dated a year earlier—the same day Anne attended an academic conference."I saw her at the conference today. Anne Shaw. The moment she smiled, I couldn't look away."I found out where she lives. I followed her all day today. She went to the library, then a café, and finally home. I've recorded every detail of her routine."I tried to get closer to her, but she rejected me. It hurt more than I expected."Page after page revealed the doctor's descent into obsession. The journal meticulously documented how he stalked Anne, monitored her daily life, and invaded her privacy. What began as admiration gradually twisted into an unhealthy fixation. And when Anne rejected him, that fixation curdled into resentment and hatred. The livestream exploded.Comments flooded in at such a speed they were impossibl

"Mr. Shaw, I need to tell you something. It looks like there may have been a problem with the memory extraction."Daniel frowned."What do you mean? The doctor has a perfect alibi for the night of the murders."He was performing a highly complex brain surgery at the time. There are at least a dozen doctors and nurses who can verify it."The crowd in the square had still been gossiping about the supposed affair between the doctor and me, with many already preparing to leave. But those words were broadcast across the square through the loudspeaker Daniel had forgotten to turn off.A stunned silence followed.People began exchanging bewildered looks. The doctor had an alibi. The revelation hit Daniel like a sledgehammer. If that was true, then the memory in which I identified him as the killer might have been deliberately planted.Perhaps I knew I would eventually be subjected to memory extraction and had somehow manipulated the evidence in advance. But why?Why would I use my own death t

Static crackled across the giant screen.Several long seconds passed before the image finally stabilized.Nearly everyone in the square held their breath. No one even dared blink. At last, as my gaze in the memory slowly lifted upward, a man in a tailored suit stepped into view.He wore gold-rimmed glasses and carried himself with the calm, refined air of an intellectual. The moment people realized who he was, the entire square fell silent.A few seconds later, shocked cries erupted from the crowd."Oh my God! It's the doctor!""The killer is the chief physician!"The man was none other than the chief physician who oversaw the Memory Extraction System from beginning to end.The same man who just persuaded Daniel to use the auxiliary extraction helmet.Daniel looked as though he had been struck by lightning. He stood frozen for several seconds before suddenly spinning around and glaring at the doctor beside the control console. The doctor's face was equally stunned. The clipboard slippe

"Mr. Shaw, we can't continue!"One of the doctors shouted, "The damage to her brain and spine is too severe! The connection is becoming more unstable by the second. We can't extract any more memories!"Daniel acted as though he hadn't heard a word.By now, he realized that there seemed to be a reason behind everything I had done.A reason that drove me to this point."Faith, what are you waiting for? Tell me."He crouched down in front of me and asked with genuine seriousness. But it was too late.My brain had already suffered catastrophic damage.Blood and saliva trickled from the corners of my mouth, and all I could offer him was a vacant, foolish smile. The sight of me like that made Daniel reach out, intending to release me from the Memory Extraction System. The doctors immediately stopped him."She's not going to survive!""Even if you take her off now, she'll die!""We should use the auxiliary extraction unit and drive the system at maximum power.""At least... at least we might
