Maxwell’s POV

I was tired of sitting around at home.

My ankle had healed perfectly. Only the shoulder remained a thorn in my side.

The pain had dulled, but moving it was still a hassle. It would take two more weeks until the bone healed, and a bit more time until the tissues healed themselves. At least the amount of plastered bandages would be gone in a couple of weeks.

I could only ask for small mercies these days.

Now that Morgana was out of the equation and I was out of commission from work, I needed someone new to fill her place.

I had immediately asked my assistant to give me new portfolios and set up interviews, which I had been taking from home for the past couple of days.

There were many young graduates who were enthusiastic to work with the company, but I was looking for someone more experienced who could handle all the work Morgana was doing.

However, I had realized one thing.

I had given Morgana too much power over the company and clients. She was doing too much at once, ap

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 167: The Doorway Witness

Regina’s POVI left the Chamberlain estate early, not wanting to spend any more time around Maxwell than was strictly necessary.Last night was a great reminder that there should always be some kind of distance, some kind of wall, between Maxwell and me.Because what happened last night could never happen again. Should never happen again.I pulled into the Veyron estate while the sun was at its peak in the sky.Mia chattered away in the backseat, her little voice bubbling with excitement as I parked.“Mommy, I had so much fun! Ivan showed me his toy collection, and we played dragons and castles in the garden. I just wish I could stay there longer.”Her words tugged at me. Ivan was her anchor, her closest friend, her twin. My heart softened as I helped her out of the car. “You’ll see him again soon,” I reassured her, brushing a stray curl away from her face.Mia’s eyes grew thoughtful, her lips pressing into a line as if she were carrying some enormous decision on her tiny shoulders. “

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 166: Caught Between Two Fires

Regina’s POVI’m sure I looked like a mess. The last couple of hours had been a whirlwind.Going to Frederick’s. Kissing him. Reading through his messages. Running away from the shock and fear of what I’d found. Finding myself at the Chamberlain estate. Getting wet in the rain. Showering with Maxwell just in the other room. Kissing Maxwell. What has my life become?I cleared my throat. “Frederick?”He stood there on the porch, the rain dripping from his dark hair and the collar of his coat, his expression sharp with something between concern and suspicion. My pulse skittered. I hadn’t prepared for this. I hadn’t even imagined this.I tugged him inside and away from the rain, closing the door behind him. There was silence when I faced him, but I had questions.“What… what are you doing here?” My voice came out cracked, too thin, too defensive.Instead of answering me, Frederick’s gaze slid past my shoulder. I followed the direction of his eyes and froze.Maxwell was standing behind me

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 165: The Stranger I Once loved

Regina’s POVI didn’t know how it all happened. Before I knew it, Maxwell’s lips were on mine. The shock of it lit a fire through me, a blaze of heat I hadn’t felt in years. My body knew him, too well, far too well, and in an instant I was pulled back, carried against my will into a memory buried so deep I thought I’d never unearth it again. The memory of the first kiss we shared***It was my first year at university, late autumn, the air sharp enough to cut. I was in the library, huddled over textbooks and notes for our Design Economics class, which was a brutal hybrid between architecture and business that had all of us groaning under its weight.I had pushed myself too long, too late, trying to soak in every theory, every formula, until the librarian cleared her throat and gently reminded me they were closing. When I stepped outside, the cobblestone path glistened under the first drops of rain. By the time I reached the main quad, the drizzle had turned to a downpour.Sheets of wa

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 164: Drenched In Memory

Maxwell’s POVThe house had grown quiet.Ivan had finally fallen asleep, though he fought it longer than Mia. I’d tucked both kids in, checked on them twice, and then buried myself in work. The board’s reports were spread across my desk, contracts, architectural drafts, and endless numbers. I told myself I cared, that it all mattered, but really, I was just filling the silence.I had finally gotten the cast removed, and only a thin bandage remained where the wound was still healing.I had missed so much of the work that I was finding it a little bit hard to catch up.But I knew I had to as soon as possible, if I were going to get back in business and take the lead of my company like I always should have been.I had made a vow to myself.I won’t give anyone the kind of power I’d given Morgana. Not over my business, not over my life, and certainly not over my kids.I don’t know how long I had been sitting in my home office, but eventually, hunger pulled me to the kitchen. I was standing

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 163: Blackmail

Regina’s POV The moment his lips touched mine, I felt the glass in my hand tilt. It wasn’t intentional. I swear it wasn’t. But the drink sloshed over the rim, pouring down Frederick’s chest in an instant.“Damn it,” he muttered, jerking back as the amber liquid spread across his shirt. He looked at me with surprise and mild annoyance, then sighed. “I’ll clean this up.”Before I could respond, he was already up and moving toward the washroom, peeling the wet shirt off his body as he disappeared around the corner. My heart pounded. This was it. My chance. The phone was sitting there on the coffee table, screen dark and silent, but I knew its secrets were only a swipe away. I hesitated because I knew once I looked, I couldn’t unsee whatever I was about to find, but curiosity and suspicion burned hotter than any guilt.I reached for it, thumb trembling slightly as I pressed the screen awake. His passcode appeared. Four digits. I remembered them from the countless times I’d seen him type

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 162: Desperate Measures

Regina’s POVThe rest of the weekend was spent thinking about nothing but what I saw on Saturday. The sight of Frederick pulling into that prison parking lot, the one where Morgana was being held.No matter how many times I replayed it in my head, it didn’t make sense. What business would Frederick have at the prison if I take Morgana out of the picture?Frederick was a doctor, yes, but never had I known him to take cases in a prison ward. And if he had, why hadn’t he said a word to me?My gut twisted every time I thought about it. Something more was going on. I could feel it in my bones.Getting Mia to drop her questions about Frederick had been difficult. She’d clutched her new dragon with those wide, eager eyes, wanting to show it to him. I had to distract her with promises of a sleepover at her father’s.Dropping Ivan off had been its own kind of ordeal. Maxwell came out to meet us, his arm still in its cast. Our gazes barely met. The children’s chatter softened the air, but betwe
