Chapter 2

Author: Vespera
I was awakened by laughter coming from outside.

Dad, Mom, and Sophie were back.

They stood by the door, excitedly talking about the gala.

“That final light show was absolutely beautiful.”

Mom’s voice was gentle, almost unfamiliar.

“When Sophie stood on that stage, she looked like a little angel.”

I floated above the living room, watching them take off their coats and slip into their house shoes.

Without thinking, I drifted toward Mom.

I wanted to hang up her scarf for her.

I also wanted to say the same words I used to say whenever I tried to please her:

“Mom, you’re back.”

But the hand I reached out passed straight through her shoulder.

Mom suddenly shivered and rubbed her arm.

“Why is it so cold in here?”

“Is the heating acting up again?”

I lowered my head and looked at my own translucent palm.

Yes.

I was already dead.

And the dead, of course, could no longer touch the living.

Dad glanced toward my bedroom.

“Julia still hasn’t come out?”

“She didn’t eat dinner either. Should we go check on her?”

I immediately floated over beside Mom, looking at her expectantly.

If she discovered that I was already dead, would she be frightened?

Would she regret it?

Would she finally believe that I had really been in pain?

But Mom simply took off her coat, her voice cold and indifferent.

“She refused to eat. No one forced her.”

“That bad habit of pretending to be sick just to get attention is something she was spoiled into.”

She walked to my bedroom door and entered the passcode.

The door opened, but she didn’t turn on the light.

The light from the living room slipped through the doorway, illuminating the body slumped over the desk.

Mom paused.

“Still pretending to be asleep?”

She folded her arms, her face full of impatience.

“Julia, you’re ten years old already.”

“Don’t think that putting on a pitiful face will make everyone else clean up your mess for you.”

I floated in front of her, desperately shouting,

“Mom, I’m not asleep!”

“I’m right here! Look at me!”

“I’m already dead!”

But she couldn’t hear me.

Her eyes saw only the unresponsive body and the red light flashing repeatedly around its wrist.

Sophie squeezed past Mom and raised her own wrist.

“Mom, look. My light is still green.”

“Sister’s turned red again. She must be slacking off.”

Mom stroked Sophie’s head, and a smile finally appeared on her face.

“Our Sophie is always so well-behaved.”

“Leave her alone. Let her stay here by herself.”

Dad stood by the doorway, hesitating as he stared at my body.

“Maybe we should put her in bed? It’s freezing outside.”

“Don’t let her fool you.”

Mom’s voice was firm.

“This is what happens when children are spoiled.”

“The modern parenting experts say that this is when you need to give them the cold shoulder. We have to make her realize her own mistake.”

“Look at that red light. It means her current psychological state is still ‘extremely defiant.’ She hasn’t reflected on her behavior at all!”

Dad opened his mouth, but in the end, he said nothing.

Mom checked the time.

“Enough. Go to bed. We’re going to Grandma’s tomorrow to celebrate the holiday.”

She switched off the hallway light and casually pulled my bedroom door shut.

Click.

The lock fell into place again.

Darkness once again swallowed the room.

I floated beside my own corpse, staring at that tiny point of scarlet light.

For a long, long time, I couldn’t look away.

Mom.

If you had only come a little closer.

If you had only touched my hand.

You would have known that my body had already gone cold, and I would never breathe again.

But you didn’t.

You believed only in that cold, heartless machine.

You just didn’t believe the daughter you had carried for ten months and brought into this world.、

I floated to Maria’s hospital room one last time. She lay on the bed, so thin that only bones remained. Her once-dark hair had turned completely white, and her face was covered with wrinkles. As if she sensed something, she suddenly turned her head toward where I was standing.“Julia?”Her voice was so faint that it was almost impossible to hear.“Did you come back?”She reached out her hand, slowly searching through the air.“Mom destroyed that thing.”“Mom will never listen to it again.”“Don’t hide from Mom, okay?”As she spoke, tears began falling from her eyes.“Mom will make you tomato stew.”“This time, I won’t put any peanuts in it, and I won’t force you to eat vegetables.”“Mom will only love you from now on, okay?”I looked at the marks left around her neck.I stayed silent for a long time. Then, I walked to the side of her bed and gently placed my finger against her forehead. It was the last bit of mercy I could give her.Let her sleep. At least in her dreams, she wouldn’t h

Mom was eventually sent to a psychiatric hospital.Because she had been seriously harming herself for a long time, and had even nearly strangled herself to death at home.Everyone believed she was no longer capable of living alone. So the community intervened and forced her to be admitted. After that, she became the most unusual patient in the entire ward.No one knew where she found it.But she made a red plastic ring and wrapped it around her neck.It was something she had created by imitating the self-discipline bracelet. The first time a nurse tried to remove it, she suddenly went insane. She bit down on the nurse’s hand and refused to let go until blood was pouring out.“Don’t touch it!”“The red light is still watching me!”“Julia will get angry. You can’t take it off!”After that, no one dared to casually approach the plastic ring around her neck. She developed a terrifying conditioned reaction to the words “bracelet.”Whenever a nurse simply asked,“Maria, have you eaten today?

Then what about all the pain I suffered during those years? What did it all mean?I laughed. But as I laughed, tears fell from my eyes.So even a soul after death could still cry.The final page of the diary was opened.By the time the female officer reached this part, her voice had already begun to tremble.“The handwriting is extremely messy. It was most likely written shortly before her death.”“Mom, if I die, will the bracelet finally stop ringing?”“Will you hug me then?”“I really wasn’t lying.”“My chest hurts so much. It feels like something is twisting a knife inside.”“Mom, in my next life, please don’t make me wear this bracelet again. I’m begging you.”“I want to be an ordinary child.”“I want to eat the tomato-braised meat you make.”Mom stared at the plastic pieces scattered on the table. The “green light of discipline” she had believed in so deeply. It had only been a cheap toy.Because of that toy, she had spoiled Sophie for ten years. And because of that damn red light

To confirm the details of the abuse and secure the evidence, the police opened the diary that had been classified as a “key piece of evidence” in front of Mom and Dad.The notebook I had used for ten years. The notebook filled with humiliation, pain, and tears. The female officer’s voice was soft. But every word cut deeper than a knife.“February 14th. Sunny.”“Mom put peanuts on my plate. I’m allergic to peanuts. If I eat them, my throat will swell and I won’t be able to breathe.”“I told her I didn’t want to eat them. I said I felt sick. Because I was afraid Mom would get angry, my heart started beating so fast, and the red light came on.”“Mom said I was being picky and accused me of lying. She forced me to finish the entire plate.”“That night, I vomited blood. My throat felt like it was burning.”“Mom saw it and said I had secretly drunk tomato juice to pretend I was sick.”“She turned the bracelet’s alarm volume to the highest level and let the piercing sound ring beside my ears

She slapped the bracelet hard, as if she were hitting a television with a bad connection.“What’s wrong? Is it broken?”“Everything I said is true! I am Maria!”She began to panic, her words coming faster and faster.“It must be broken!”“That forensic examiner damaged it!”“I’ll try again. I’ll try again!”She swallowed hard and suddenly raised her voice.“I didn’t abuse my child!”“I only did it for her own good!”“I love her!”“Beep beep beep—!”The piercing alarm suddenly grew louder. The red light flashed wildly, so fast that it almost became one endless blur of crimson. The bracelet detected her rapidly rising heart rate, and the alarm became even sharper.“Stop!”The noise made Mom tremble violently. Her wrist shook uncontrollably with it.The sound was like countless needles stabbing directly into her eardrums. She suddenly remembered when I was ten years old.My appendix had ruptured, and I had curled up on the floor in unbearable pain. The bracelet’s alarm had screamed throug

The neige police. She had been frightened by Mom’s screams. When she saw what had happened inside the room, she collapsed at the doorway, her face turning deathly pale. Not long after, the sound of sirens echoed throughout the entire building. The police arrived. The forensic examiner arrived as well.A police cordon was quickly set up, sealing off my room.I floated in the air, watching them come in and out.Camera flashes kept going off, illuminating my cold, blackened body.Mom was taken to the living room by a female officer and forced to sit on the sofa. She was still trying to explain herself.“Officer, she was pretending to be sick.”“She had always been lazy since she was little. The bracelet was always showing red. The machine couldn’t be wrong.”“I only wanted to educate her. Everything I did was for her own good.”No one responded to her.Everyone looked at her as if they were staring at a complete stranger. As if they were looking at something terrifying. When the forensic
