Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Arya
For as long as I could remember, my parents were rarely home.

They were the Beta couple of the Moonshadow Pack, and they had spent their lives guarding the borders for the old Alpha. Whenever the pack mentioned them, people called them loyal and powerful. They also said I was lucky to have parents like them and a brother like Soren.

But I barely saw them. The one who truly raised me was Soren.

When I was six, I was bullied by young wolves in the pack and hid behind the Moonlight Tree crying. When Soren found me, his shoes were covered in snow and mud.

He crouched down to wipe my face, his voice still awkward with youth.

“Don't cry. Your brother will protect you.”

The next day, he went to the training field and beat up the young wolves who had bullied me. The elders punished him by making him serve as a sparring partner for the border warriors for a full month.

When I secretly went to see him, an adult wolf had just thrown him to the ground. There was blood at the corner of his mouth, yet he smiled at me on purpose.

“This is nothing.”

“When I get stronger, no one will dare bully you again.”

Soren had always been the gentler one.

Kaiden was the old Alpha's only son, raised to be calm and restrained, and even his concern often came with a force that left no room to refuse. But every time I got into trouble, he would still hide me behind him first, then go to the elders and take the blame for me.

When I was fourteen, the Moon Goddess confirmed that he and I were fated mates. Under the full moon, he placed the moonstone ring on my finger and promised that on my eighteenth birthday, he would give me the grandest Marking Ceremony.

Back then, I thought they would always love me.

Until the year my parents died in battle.

There was a border uprising, and silver-poison weapons appeared in the north for the first time. My parents died in the Snow Valley protecting the old Alpha.

During that battle, Kaiden's childhood injury to his wolf soul flared up again, and Soren was nearly destroyed by silver poison. The one who saved them was a witch who had once been exiled by the Moonshadow Pack.

She used forbidden magic to give part of her Moon Goddess blessing to Kaiden and drew the silver poison out of Soren.

The price was her life.

Before she died, she held Soren's hand and begged him to find her missing daughter.

A year later, Soren found Lia. The day he brought her back to the pack, there was a solemn look in his eyes I had not seen in years.

He said, “Freya, her mother saved Kaiden and me.”

“From now on, she is your sister too.”

At first, I truly tried to be good to Lia.

She was afraid of the dark, so I gave her my moon lamp. She said she was not used to pack banquets, so I sat with her in the corner. The first time her old illness flared up, I went to the Moon Temple in the middle of the night to fetch a Healer.

But later, she began destroying things that mattered to me.

First it was the moon-silver comb my mother had left me. Then it was my father's border badge.

Every time, she would apologize with red eyes and say she was clumsy. Soren would tell me she had suffered enough outside the pack, that I should be more understanding.

Kaiden would rub his brow and tell me her mother had saved us.

Later, Lia wanted my key, my gown, my room, and Kaiden's company through every night her illness acted up.

At last, I broke. But she was the daughter of the woman who had saved my brother and my mate. All I could do was hide in the stairwell at night and cry where no one could hear me.

That was the night I heard Lia on the phone at the end of the corridor.

“They'll never guess that the real Lia died in that attack in the south.”

“All I did was take the moon-marked charm she was wearing, yet those two idiots instantly believed I was their savior's daughter.”

The person on the other end said something. Lia gave a soft little scoff.

“The Alpha and the Beta are almost laughably stupid. One is turning his back on his mate, and the other on his own sister, all for me.”

I froze as my blood slowly ran cold. When I stepped back, I accidentally knocked over the plant stand by the wall.

Lia opened the door. The smile in her eyes hadn't even faded. Then she flashed me a malicious little smile before turning and flinging herself down the stairs.

By the time Kaiden and Soren rushed over, she was curled at the bottom of the steps, crying so hard her whole body shook.

“I only wanted to explain things to Freya.”

“But I think she really hates me.”

That was the first time she framed me.

After that, every time I tried to tell them the truth, they called it jealousy.

Later, Soren and Kaiden took her side more and more often. Kaiden kept postponing the Marking Ceremony that should have happened on my eighteenth birthday.

Each time, I told myself that one day they would come to their senses.

Until today, Lia shattered the moon-silver bell my mother had left me. It was the keepsake my mother had worn on her wrist when she was alive. My name was still carved inside the bell.

When I arrived, the pieces were scattered across the floor.

Lia was already clutching her chest and sobbing, accusing me of coating her utensils with silver poison and causing her wolf to go berserk.

Soren and Kaiden believed her.

Soren said that no keepsake, no matter how precious, mattered more than Lia's life. Kaiden carried Lia to the hospital. When he passed me, there was only disappointment in his eyes.

Standing alone among the broken silver pieces, I finally lost the last of my hope.

I had to leave.

  • After I Faked My Death, My Brother and Mate Went Crazy   Chapter 14

Before my parents' death anniversary, I still returned to the Moonshadow Pack.On the day itself, Soren was already waiting outside the temple to take me to our parents' graves. The car stopped outside the cemetery. Soren and I got out and walked the rest of the way. He had bought a great many offerings, as if he meant to make up for all the years he had missed. On the gravestone, my parents' smiles were still kind and gentle. The wind lifted the hem of my robe. Holding my Priestess's silver staff, I spoke softly to them for a long time.Soren stood to the side, silent from beginning to end. When we left, I still could not hold back my tears.Soren's eyes were red when he asked, “Freya, no matter what Kaiden and I do, will you never forgive us?”I wiped my tears dry. All I said was, “I can forgive you.”“As long as you never disturb me again.”I would never forget the suffering of those days. And I would never return to the way things used to be.The wounds had healed, but the scars re

After that day, Kaiden did not appear in front of me for several days, and I was happy to have the quiet.I devoted most of my attention to temple duties, spending my free time organizing the Moon Goddess's archives. After the moon-lamp prayers, the Silver Coast Temple's elder council finished its preliminary selection.Five days passed in a flash, and I received notice that I would be allowed to preside over the Moon Blessing Assembly. To celebrate, I invited Nolan and several Priestesses to dinner in the side hall. While we were preparing the food, Soren rang the bell. When I opened the door, he handed me a wooden box.“I brought these from the Moonshadow Pack. They're all things you used to like...”“I've told you many times. I don't need them.”“Stop wasting your effort.”The smile on Soren's face turned bleak. “Freya, is there truly nothing I can do to make you forgive me?”“I'm moving forward. I hope you can too.”Soren was silent for a long while. “Next month is our parents' dea

When Kaiden's people brought Lia to me, I almost did not recognize the woman in front of me.Lia looked haggard, with none of the fragile prettiness she used to wear so well.Less than two years had passed, yet she had been worn down to this state. Clearly, she had suffered quite a bit.I had to admit, seeing her like that felt satisfying. But beneath that satisfaction, there was a sadness I could not ignore. How much had Kaiden and Soren cherished Lia back then? How much had Soren indulged her? How many times had Kaiden delayed my Marking Ceremony for her?Because they protected her and favored her, I had swallowed more hurt than I could count. Yet after I left, they quickly turned all that resentment onto Lia.Their love and hatred, their affection and disgust, had always been this cheap.I admitted that I hated Lia. I hated her deeply and despised her completely. But now, I despised Kaiden and Soren even more.If Lia was simply cruel and malicious, then Kaiden and Soren were the arr

Before boarding, there was a problem with my ticket. I could not take that ship.I felt no surprise at all. Knowing Kaiden, there was no way he would do nothing and simply let me leave.I told Nolan and the two other Priestesses to go first. I would stay behind and handle it.Pulling my suitcase through the North Harbor terminal, I scanned the hall once and found Kaiden easily. The late autumn harbor was bitterly cold. He wore a long black coat, his posture still straight, and he stood out sharply in the crowd. He was watching me with naked, desperate hope. I motioned for him to come over.Joy flashed across Kaiden's face, and he immediately strode toward me.“Freya.”“You tampered with my ticket.”It was not a question.Kaiden admitted it without hesitation. “I did. I can't let you leave so easily.”I looked at him coldly. “Do you know why I left?”“Because you and Soren are already dead to me.”“Because the two of you mean less to me now than strangers who have nothing to do with my

The footsteps were familiar. Strangely, my heart settled instead.Only when they stopped behind me did Kaiden's trembling, careful voice reach me.“Freya, is that you?”I did not turn around. I lowered my eyes and kept looking at my phone.Kaiden came around to stand in front of me. He stared at me, then took one step closer.“Freya, I know it's you.”I lifted my head, letting a trace of confusion show on my face.“Sir, are you speaking to me?”Almost two years had passed. My long hair had been cut to my shoulders. The silver-white robe I wore no longer belonged to the Moonshadow Pack. It was the robe of a Silver Coast Temple Priestess.Even my scent had been altered by the temple's moon spring. It was nothing like before.Kaiden's eyes slowly reddened.“Freya, I know you're still angry with me. Lia lied to me back then. That's why I hurt you.”“But I regret it now. Freya, I truly know I was wrong.”Lia's tricks had never been clever. They were crude, even. But he and Soren had believe

I settled into life at the Silver Coast Temple.Life there moved slowly. Every morning, sea mist would drift over the white stone steps outside the temple before the bells rang from the tower.I would wake to the sound of those bells, change into the silver-white robes of a Moon Priestess, and go to the main hall to light the moon lamps and record the names of the wolves who came to pray.In the afternoons, I stayed in the archives sorting old scrolls, or followed the elders as they taught me how to recognize the traces left behind by the Moon Goddess's blessing. When I had free time, I went for walks at North Harbor. I let my mind go blank and thought of nothing at all.News from the Moonshadow Pack still reached me from time to time. For example, after my death notice was sent back to the pack, Kaiden and Soren nearly tore the entire northern territory apart looking for me.And later, they made Lia's stolen identity public. The real Lia had died long ago in the battle at the southern
