Chapter 3

Yuki
I sat against the door all night, reliving every memory I shared with them.

Even though I had decided to leave, part of me still ached to let them go.

Late that night something struck me as wrong. Brynn's scent was too strong.

A true descendant of an ancient bloodline would have no need to flood an entire room with her scent just to announce her presence.

I hurriedly pulled my mother's old tomes and herbal guides from the shelf, then searched them line by line in the moonlight seeping through the window.

Some tinctures could temporarily elevate the scent of a low-ranked wolf to mimic a higher rank.

Certain herbs, mixed together, could counterfeit the scent of a bloodline.

I seemed to have uncovered a staggering secret.

I wrote down the names of several ingredients, rummaged through the corner until I found them all, and mixed a small vial of reversing agent.

Once the patrol's footsteps faded, I threw on a cloak and climbed out the window.

Brynn's window wasn't locked. I pushed it open and climbed in.

She was deeply asleep and breathing evenly.

I picked up one of her hairs and touched a drop of the liquid to it.

The overpowering golden scent dissolved at once.

From beneath it rose the sour smell of old leather, tainted by something rank.

I took half a step back, my heart pounding wildly.

Fake. It was all fake.

That noble bloodline was only a shell. Beneath it lay the sour rot unique to a mongrel wolf.

For a second my knuckles went white around the vial.

I desperately wanted to expose her, but I didn't have complete proof.

She could invent any excuse, and they would believe her because they always did.

I stepped back and the floorboard creaked under me.

Brynn rolled over. I froze, holding my breath.

Only when her breathing settled again did I move.

...

The next morning, someone pounding on my door woke me.

Silas was standing at my bed with a face like a storm.

Brynn sobbed beside him, her shoulders shaking and her eyes swollen.

My father was in the doorway, and Rian had pushed in behind him, still limping.

"You went into Brynn's room last night," Silas said as the crushing weight of his Alpha dominance bore down on me.

My heart had gone numb with hurt. I didn't hide anything.

"So what if I did?"

"What did you give her to drink?"

"I took a single strand of her hair."

I lifted my chin at the corner of the table.

"I was curious about what a noble ancient bloodline smelled like. I did nothing else."

Fury filled my father's face, sharpened by intense disappointment.

"Talia, you're lying. I never imagined the daughter I raised would brew a tincture using dark magic."

His accusation cut deep, but I forced myself to answer. "I don't know what you're talking about. I took one hair and did nothing else."

I looked at Brynn. Her eyes were wet, but the smug challenge in her gaze was impossible to hide.

So I understood. This was Brynn hitting back.

"Talia, I know you're jealous of me, but I haven't done anything wrong. I only came back to my own pack. If you want to be Luna, I can give the position back to you. Would that be enough?"

Her wounded, obedient little act made my father, my brother, and Silas even angrier.

Silas stood over the bed and looked down at me without a trace of warmth.

"Talia, stop fantasizing about becoming Luna. Since you refuse to behave, you can patrol the border."

Rian's head snapped up. "Alpha, border patrol is staffed entirely by males. Talia is too weak!"

Silas glanced sideways at him. "Are you defying me?"

Rian's clenched fist loosened, then tightened again. At last, he lowered his head. "...I wouldn't dare."

I leaned against the headboard, almost laughing at their blindness even as it broke my heart.

I stared into Silas's eyes, the ones that had once mesmerized me, and said steadily, "If you insist on forcing me to the border... then I would rather leave the pack."

Within seconds, his claws punched through her chest, tore cleanly through flesh, and crushed her heart. Her mouth fell open. Then she collapsed without making a sound.Blood poured from her chest, spreading into a vast dark-red stain across the snow.He withdrew his blood-soaked hand and turned to face me."That was the debt she owed you. I wanted you to see me collect it for you with your own eyes."I know I was wrong, Talia. I executed that lying she-wolf. Please come back to me."His hand would not stop trembling, yet he fought to force a smile for me.That smile dragged me back to the days just after he had come of age, when he killed his first full-grown moose, one that had survived the winter alone. He carried it back to camp and smiled beside the fire. That smile had all the ease and swagger a young wolf has, as though the whole world were under his feet. Now, a similar smile rested on the same face, but none of that youthful triumph remained. His words enraged Alexius. He spoke my name like a man who had finally recovered a treasure he thought lost forever.Displeasure flashed over Alexius's face as he stepped forward, shielding me behind him.Silas acted as though Alexius were not there. His deep-set eyes remained locked on me.His body sagged halfway to the ground, nearly dropping him to his knees in the snow. The overpowering scent of an Alpha in heat rolled off him.I had almost forgotten. This was the night of the full moon.Grown werewolves usually get through a heat on suppressants. But Silas's body was clearly so weak that even suppressants could no longer help him.He could not withstand the urge. His entire body shook. To stay clearheaded, he bit hard into his wrist. Blood welled from the wound at once."I searched for you for so long... so long... It cost me nearly everything..."At that moment, more figures emerged behind him.Sterling Valentine and Rian Valentine. My adoptive father and my adoptive brother.Only then did I notice that th

Each day in my true body left me feeling more at home.My mother came every day to help me choose gowns and match jewelry to them.My father was stern and quiet, but he gathered countless precious jewels for me.Alexius came every day to talk with me and share quiet, tender moments, sometimes staying until midnight. The evening before the full moon, he sat on my windowsill, his gray eyes deep with emotion.Outside, a patrol crossed the snow carrying torches, their firelight gilding his lashes."Talia, tomorrow you formally become my Luna. Are you nervous?"I smiled faintly. "I'm not nervous. I'm excited.""And I'm nervous enough for both of us."He watched me without moving. "I've waited so many years for you that this still feels like a dream. I'm terrified I'll look away and you'll be gone again."I wrapped my arms around him to reassure him.My sudden embrace caught him off guard. To everyone else, he was an imposing young Alpha, but the tips of his ears turned red.He said nothing

The picture cut out.I sat on the bed in my new room, my fingers loosening from the sheet only to tighten again. The System asked, [Host. You've seen the truth. They loved you all along. They were only blinded by a tincture. Do you want to go back and see them?]I was quiet for a long time. The images I had just seen replayed over and over in my mind.Watching my former mate and family suffer that deeply did stir something inside me.I sighed. "They truly were good to me once, but their later coldness and suspicion were real too. So were the lashes they laid across my back."I can't go back. I can't forgive them."The System was quiet for a moment, and when it spoke again there was something like guilt in it.[Host. There's something I never told you.]I waited.[The body you're in now was always yours. At eight years old someone put a curse on you and separated your wolf from your flesh. You drifted in the wilds as a spirit for a long time, and our main System detected your potential

When I opened my eyes again, an elegant, highborn face hovered above me.A beautiful woman in her forties stood there, her silver-gray hair pinned at the back of her head. When she saw me open my eyes, she froze for a heartbeat before tears streamed down her face."Oh, Goddess! She's awake... Talia, you're finally awake!"She gathered me into her arms, her hands trembling.I opened my mouth. My throat felt scraped raw."Who are you...?""I'm your mother."She released me and looked me over from head to toe, laughing through her tears. "You've been unconscious for decades. You went out to play when you were eight and never woke up. We all thought..."She couldn't finish it.Startled, I called to the System in my mind. A body with my name had apparently existed all along. The System answered quickly.[This body was always a shell. Its wolf has been absent since the age of eight. It was reserved as your vessel.]My mother kept talking beside me as she wiped away her tears. While she spoke

When I drifted out of the dungeon, my soul was as light as a leaf lifted by wind.On the altar, Silas was on his knees. His back bowed, his fingers dug into the seams between the stones, and his shoulders shook violently.Soon, he could no longer hold himself together. His body shifted, his clothes tore, and a massive silver-gray wolf took his place. In wolf form, he braced all four legs against the altar and raked his claws over the stone again and again, each stroke screeching against the rock. Two guards restrained the witch against the altar rail, but her face showed no fear. She looked at the silver-gray wolf on the ground and mocked him coldly. "Alpha, your wolf is going mad. That's what happens when an Alpha loses his fated mate. Surely you still haven't realized who your mate truly is?"Silas used every ounce of strength to force his wolf down and shift back. Bare-chested, he knelt on the ground with his chest heaving and the veins bulging at his temples. He raised his head, hi
