Chapter 5

Yuki
On the day of the marking ceremony I was on border patrol.

Just after dawn the pack's patrol found me and said the Alpha had ordered every member of the pack to witness it.

They marched me back to the territory.

Pack members crowded every inch of ground around the altar.

Brynn stood beside Silas in a moon-white robe, her golden hair falling loose. She looked every inch the highborn beauty.

I stood unsteadily off to one side. I had barely eaten in days, and almost none of my strength remained.

Rian looked up at me.

His gaze swept over my face, and the indifference in his eyes faltered.

Silas saw me too. His gaze flickered over my gaunt, sallow face.

It lasted only a heartbeat. Brynn leaned into him and whispered, "Silas, Talia looks frightening. Does she still hate me?"

Silas looked away and gave the order coldly. "Talia, don't get any ideas. You are not ruining this ceremony. I'll have people watching you."

A desolate laugh slipped out of me. "Don't worry. I came bearing a gift for the two of you."

I stepped aside, and the witch came up through the crowd.

She had changed into a clean, dark-gray cloak. A rune chain circled her wrist, and the sigil at her waist blazed in the firelight.

It was the sigil of the Witch of the Sacred Spring. Her rank stood two levels above even that of our pack's finest herbalist.

The moment Brynn saw her, her face changed and she shrank back.

The witch stopped below the altar and looked up at Brynn. "Daughter of House Viperis. It's been a long time. Don't you think it's time to return what you stole?"

The crowd fell silent as every gaze shifted between the Witch of the Sacred Spring and Brynn.

Brynn forced tears into her eyes. "I don't know you..."

The witch pulled the wooden vial out of her sleeve and held it up. "The night you slept in my hut, you took my tincture. Do I have to say what for?"

Brynn shook her head in panic, tears streaming as she clung to Silas's arm for protection. "No... I never did..."

Before Silas could issue an order, the Witch of the Sacred Spring poured a second liquid into the wooden vial.

A bitter odor drifted over the altar. The golden light around Brynn began to flicker violently as the faint sour scent of a low-ranked wolf tainted her noble aura.

The pack broke into an uproar.

The witch fixed Brynn with a razor-sharp stare. "A stolen noble bloodline cannot last forever. One dose of reversing agent will reveal your true nature. Dare to try it, Brynn?"

My father and Rian frowned, their gazes shifting from the vial in her hand to me.

My nails bit into my palms. I refused to admit that a sliver of hope still lived inside me.

Then my father shouted, "Talia, you joined forces with an outsider to slander the Luna. You've lost your mind!"

Silas was silent for only a moment before saying, "A she-wolf banished from this territory and a witch of unknown origin have no right to speak at this altar. Take them away."

I unclenched my hand, a bitter smile curving my lips.

Of course.

My father pointed at me furiously. "Talia refuses to repent. We cannot go easy on her this time."

Silas turned his face away as though he didn't want to see me. "Five lashes. Then the dungeon until the ceremony is over."

Rian's head snapped up. He stepped forward with his fists clenched, but the crushing weight of Silas's Alpha dominance stopped him cold.

He looked away, his clenched fists whitening at the knuckles, and said nothing more.

The witch tried to stop them, but with her wound still unhealed, all she could do was watch as they brought out the whip.

I didn't cry out once as the lashes fell.

After the fifth lash, my back burned as if it were on fire. Compared with the pain inside my chest, it was almost nothing.

They dragged me into the dungeon, and the iron door shut and locked.

A horn sounded outside.

The ceremony on the altar had begun.

When the hymn to the Moon Goddess began, I leaned against the frozen wall. My lash wounds pressed into the rough stone, and every breath set my back burning.

[Host, it's time. You may prepare to transfer.]

The System's electronic voice sounded in my head, and I exhaled in relief.

The ceremony hymn seeped through the gap beneath the door. I closed my eyes, pressed my wolf claws to my chest, and slowly bore down.

Warm blood ran down between my fingers, and my heart stopped for good.

On the altar, Silas was sinking his fangs into the back of Brynn's neck.

The instant his bite left its mark, he should have felt elated. Instead, something seemed to rip his chest open from within.

His strength vanished, and he dropped to his knees on the altar as his own wolf screamed inside his head.

A scent he knew intimately, mingled with blood, drifted from the direction of the dungeon.

Within seconds, his claws punched through her chest, tore cleanly through flesh, and crushed her heart. Her mouth fell open. Then she collapsed without making a sound.Blood poured from her chest, spreading into a vast dark-red stain across the snow.He withdrew his blood-soaked hand and turned to face me."That was the debt she owed you. I wanted you to see me collect it for you with your own eyes."I know I was wrong, Talia. I executed that lying she-wolf. Please come back to me."His hand would not stop trembling, yet he fought to force a smile for me.That smile dragged me back to the days just after he had come of age, when he killed his first full-grown moose, one that had survived the winter alone. He carried it back to camp and smiled beside the fire. That smile had all the ease and swagger a young wolf has, as though the whole world were under his feet. Now, a similar smile rested on the same face, but none of that youthful triumph remained. His words enraged Alexius. He spoke my name like a man who had finally recovered a treasure he thought lost forever.Displeasure flashed over Alexius's face as he stepped forward, shielding me behind him.Silas acted as though Alexius were not there. His deep-set eyes remained locked on me.His body sagged halfway to the ground, nearly dropping him to his knees in the snow. The overpowering scent of an Alpha in heat rolled off him.I had almost forgotten. This was the night of the full moon.Grown werewolves usually get through a heat on suppressants. But Silas's body was clearly so weak that even suppressants could no longer help him.He could not withstand the urge. His entire body shook. To stay clearheaded, he bit hard into his wrist. Blood welled from the wound at once."I searched for you for so long... so long... It cost me nearly everything..."At that moment, more figures emerged behind him.Sterling Valentine and Rian Valentine. My adoptive father and my adoptive brother.Only then did I notice that th

Each day in my true body left me feeling more at home.My mother came every day to help me choose gowns and match jewelry to them.My father was stern and quiet, but he gathered countless precious jewels for me.Alexius came every day to talk with me and share quiet, tender moments, sometimes staying until midnight. The evening before the full moon, he sat on my windowsill, his gray eyes deep with emotion.Outside, a patrol crossed the snow carrying torches, their firelight gilding his lashes."Talia, tomorrow you formally become my Luna. Are you nervous?"I smiled faintly. "I'm not nervous. I'm excited.""And I'm nervous enough for both of us."He watched me without moving. "I've waited so many years for you that this still feels like a dream. I'm terrified I'll look away and you'll be gone again."I wrapped my arms around him to reassure him.My sudden embrace caught him off guard. To everyone else, he was an imposing young Alpha, but the tips of his ears turned red.He said nothing

The picture cut out.I sat on the bed in my new room, my fingers loosening from the sheet only to tighten again. The System asked, [Host. You've seen the truth. They loved you all along. They were only blinded by a tincture. Do you want to go back and see them?]I was quiet for a long time. The images I had just seen replayed over and over in my mind.Watching my former mate and family suffer that deeply did stir something inside me.I sighed. "They truly were good to me once, but their later coldness and suspicion were real too. So were the lashes they laid across my back."I can't go back. I can't forgive them."The System was quiet for a moment, and when it spoke again there was something like guilt in it.[Host. There's something I never told you.]I waited.[The body you're in now was always yours. At eight years old someone put a curse on you and separated your wolf from your flesh. You drifted in the wilds as a spirit for a long time, and our main System detected your potential

When I opened my eyes again, an elegant, highborn face hovered above me.A beautiful woman in her forties stood there, her silver-gray hair pinned at the back of her head. When she saw me open my eyes, she froze for a heartbeat before tears streamed down her face."Oh, Goddess! She's awake... Talia, you're finally awake!"She gathered me into her arms, her hands trembling.I opened my mouth. My throat felt scraped raw."Who are you...?""I'm your mother."She released me and looked me over from head to toe, laughing through her tears. "You've been unconscious for decades. You went out to play when you were eight and never woke up. We all thought..."She couldn't finish it.Startled, I called to the System in my mind. A body with my name had apparently existed all along. The System answered quickly.[This body was always a shell. Its wolf has been absent since the age of eight. It was reserved as your vessel.]My mother kept talking beside me as she wiped away her tears. While she spoke

When I drifted out of the dungeon, my soul was as light as a leaf lifted by wind.On the altar, Silas was on his knees. His back bowed, his fingers dug into the seams between the stones, and his shoulders shook violently.Soon, he could no longer hold himself together. His body shifted, his clothes tore, and a massive silver-gray wolf took his place. In wolf form, he braced all four legs against the altar and raked his claws over the stone again and again, each stroke screeching against the rock. Two guards restrained the witch against the altar rail, but her face showed no fear. She looked at the silver-gray wolf on the ground and mocked him coldly. "Alpha, your wolf is going mad. That's what happens when an Alpha loses his fated mate. Surely you still haven't realized who your mate truly is?"Silas used every ounce of strength to force his wolf down and shift back. Bare-chested, he knelt on the ground with his chest heaving and the veins bulging at his temples. He raised his head, hi
