Chapter 1

On the third day after losing my pup, I lay in the pack infirmary and stared at the gray ceiling.

My belly, round with six months of hope only days earlier, was flat again.

The daughter who used to kick beneath my ribs whenever the moon was full no longer had a heartbeat.

In the room next door, a healthy pup had just been born. Relatives crowded the hallway with flowers, blankets, and charms blessed at the Moon Shrine. Their laughter slipped beneath my door.

My mate and my son had visited me once in three days.

Adrian had not ignored what Finn had done. In front of the pack healer, he removed the heir badge from Finn's collar, canceled six months of Alpha training, and ordered daily sessions with a child therapist.

"You lied to your mother and caused your sister's death," he told him. "This was not a prank."

Finn finally cried, frightened by his father's anger.

"Aunt Vivienne said the baby would only go back to the Moon Goddess. She said Mom could have another one."

Adrian's face changed at once.

Yet when Vivienne cried over the phone and claimed she had only been trying to comfort a worried child, he merely told her to choose her words more carefully in the future.

Finn lost his training, his celebrations, and the privileges of an heir.

The adult who had planted the idea in his mind was never formally questioned.

Once Adrian had finished punishing Finn, he took him to Vivienne's Winter Moon pageant.

My phone lit up that evening. My sister had sent me a video.

She was still wearing her stage gown and immaculate makeup. She sat in a restaurant near the pack theater while Adrian, my mate of six years, cut her steak into neat, bite-sized pieces.

Now he patiently pushed Vivienne's plate back toward her and warned her that the meat was still hot.

Finn sat beside them. Vivienne speared a Brussels sprout, his most hated vegetable, and held it to his mouth.

"A future Alpha cannot be afraid of vegetables."

Finn ate it immediately. Then he finished the rest of the serving and proudly displayed his empty plate to the camera.

They looked like a family.

And I was the one who didn't belong.

Vivienne smiled: "Who does Finn love most?"

"Aunt Vivienne, of course!" His round eyes shone.

"You never make me practice shift control or check my schoolwork. When Mom and Dad break their mate bond, can you move into the pack house?"

He sounded delighted, as though his sister had not just died.

Vivienne glanced at Adrian. He did not correct Finn. He only rubbed our son's hair with weary affection.

Vivienne had always been the better sister.

She completed her first shift at seven. Her silver-white wolf was so beautiful that Vale Pack celebrated for three days. When my turn came, I spent an entire night unconscious and managed to produce only a set of claws.

Our mother sighed in front of the family and said the Moon Goddess must have given Vivienne the talent meant for both daughters.

Vivienne was stronger, higher ranked, and more graceful. She knew how to make people feel chosen. I was the quiet sister who repaired broken relics and stood at the edge of every celebration.

I had accepted that blood relatives might always prefer her.

But I believed the Moon Goddess had finally chosen me when she gave Adrian to me. I believed the pup I carried for ten months and nearly died delivering would choose me too.

Fate choosing me did not mean they would.

I turned off the video and wiped my face.

If they all wanted Vivienne to be the mistress of Blackwood Pack, I would return the position to her.

I would no longer be Adrian's mate.

And I would no longer be the mother Finn assumed he could always reclaim.

One year later, Maisie and I moved to Silverpine City, where I opened the Moon Relic Conservation Laboratory. The Frostfang Moon Archive went on public display that autumn.Opening night was the first formal event I attended under my own name rather than as somebody's Luna. Scholars asked about my conservation process. Young wolves crowded around the interactive maps, and several rogue families stood silently before the tablet that recognized chosen kin.Maisie wore a blue dress she had selected herself and corrected anyone who introduced her merely as my adopted daughter. Our new pack had never asked her to hide her rogue origins. She attended an ordinary school, argued with friends, left muddy boots by the door, and complained whenever I checked her homework. She was allowed to be imperfect without fearing that love would be withdrawn. That ordinary security was the life I had once tried to create for Finn. This time, I knew love also required boundaries, attention, and the courage t

One month later, the Moon Council held a formal hearing.Vivienne sat before the panel in a perfectly tailored white suit. Even without her stage work, endorsements, or pack protection, she looked like the sister everyone had favored since childhood. She admitted that she had always believed love existed in limited amounts. Her wolf was stronger than mine. Her grades were better. She embodied every traditional quality of a Luna. The Vale family taught her that the best things should naturally belong to her. When the Moon Goddess made me Adrian's mate, Vivienne believed I had stolen the life intended for her."I never wanted to kill the pup," she said, her eyes wet. "I wanted Finn to be frightened of having a sister. I thought he would hide the cake or cry until Adrian agreed to reject the bond."The investigator played her recording.[Silverleaf will send the pup back to the Moon Goddess. You only have to keep it secret from the adults.]Vivienne stopped denying the rest.It had not be

The healer removed the silver bullet, but Adrian remained hospitalized for two weeks.Silver suppressed even an Alpha's healing. Burns spread across his shoulder, and he could not complete a full shift without reopening the wound.I visited once, with Maisie. There were no Blackwood elders surrounding his bed and no photographs released to MoonNet. Adrian refused to turn the shooting into a public sacrifice for which I was expected to reward him.He sat propped against the pillows, still pale."Finn has returned to the territory. His therapist says he needs stability and time to understand what he did.""He was not born cruel," I said as I fastened Maisie's coat. "But children learn what to believe from the adults around them."Adrian nodded."After the pup died, I suspended his heir training and kept him from the Winter Moon events. I convinced myself I had fulfilled my responsibilities as his father and Alpha.""But when the evidence pointed to Vivienne, I punished a six-year-old and

The Moon Council reopened the silverleaf cake investigation.Adrian surrendered Vivienne's communications from the previous three years. In one recording, my sister patiently explained the mate bond to six-year-old Finn.[After your sister is born, your parents will be bonded forever.][If the pup goes back to the Moon Goddess, their bond will weaken. Then I can spend much more time with you.]She never said the words kill your sister. She packaged death as a journey, poison as an ordinary cake, and responsibility as a choice a child was not old enough to understand. After Finn gave his formal statement, he stopped sleeping through the night. He finally understood that he had not helped Vivienne win a family game. He had ended his sister's life.Adrian turned over every piece of evidence and withdrew the legal protection he had once arranged for Vivienne. This time, he did not claim she had been misunderstood.None of it restored what I had lost. The Frostfang restoration entered its f

Finn began waiting outside my fence each morning, no longer brave enough to enter without permission.Maisie usually filled a thermos with herbal tea before I left for work. Finn copied her and offered me a cup with anxious hope. When I opened it, the smell of strong black coffee rose from inside."Dad drinks it every morning," he explained. "I thought you liked it too."Caffeine made me sick. I had never drunk coffee at the Blackwood house. I prepared it for Adrian every morning, so Finn assumed the habit must have belonged to me as well.Adrian's efforts were equally clumsy. He borrowed the field station kitchen and cooked an elaborate dinner. Maisie wrinkled her nose as soon as he lifted the covers."Mom is allergic to dairy, and she doesn't eat peppers. She can't eat any of this."Adrian stared at the table."The Blackwood dining room always served these dishes.""Because all of you liked them," I said.I poured myself a bowl of plain soup. After six years as my mate, Adrian did no

Maisie's injuries were not serious. I cleaned the gravel from her elbow and spread healing salve over the scratches, but she kept one fist twisted in my sleeve."Are you going back to Blackwood Pack with them?"She knew who Adrian and Finn were. After adopting her, I did not hide my past. I told her I once had a mate and a son. I explained that they hurt me so badly I chose to leave.Maisie did not ask who had been right. She placed her small hand on my head."Did Mom hurt back then?""Very much.""Then I will love you well, so you won't hurt anymore."I first found her during the winter after the plane crash.Four-year-old Maisie was curled inside an abandoned rogue camp, wearing an adult shirt that hung below her knees. Her father had died during an uncontrolled shift, and her mother had disappeared. By the time the survey team found her, she had gone days without food and had learned to keep even her young wolf silent. When she woke at the field station, her first question was not w
