Chapter 1

“Host, be careful. Adrian's completely unhinged right now. Anyone who crosses his path ends up dead."

The system's voice trembled inside my head.

"He killed the young king, imprisoned the dowager queen, and left the capital awash in blood. He swore that unless you returned, he'd make the whole world pay for your death."

I stood within the void, looking at the system's crumbling world.

Three years ago, I failed to win Adrian over.

To escape, I threw myself from a cliff that plunged into a seemingly endless abyss before his eyes, leaving not even a trace of my remains behind.

I traded away all my feelings in exchange for a ticket home.

Now, nothing could stir my emotions anymore. If anything, I'd become cold-hearted.

“Three months. Ten million dollars.” I repeated my terms, my tone as casual as if I were discussing grocery prices.

“Deal! As long as you can stop him from blowing up the World Core!”

The system hurriedly shoved me down.

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself inside a magnificent yet eerily oppressive manor.

It was Adrian's estate.

It was also the prison he built for himself.

The courtyard gate was tightly shut. Only a few eternal lanterns swayed in the darkness, casting ghostly light.

A man dressed in black stood with his back to me, holding a shattered jeweled hairpin—the only trace I left behind when I disappeared three years ago.

After three years apart, the murderous aura surrounding Adrian had become so intense it was suffocating.

He had grown thinner. His lonely silhouette resembled a solitary sword that could snap at any moment.

“Get out.”

He seemed to sense someone behind him.

Without turning around, he spoke in a hoarse, icy voice.

“I've already said that no one is allowed in here.”

I looked at him, and a memory flashed through my mind.

Three years ago, he abandoned me alone in a bandits' hideout for the sake of his cousin, Sharon Cook.

Back then, I would have cried and been devastated.

Now, I felt nothing.

I mimicked the way I used to speak and breathe, then called softly, “Adrian.”

The man froze instantly.

“Adrian, I'm back.”

The next second, a powerful gust of wind swept toward me.

Adrian appeared before me almost instantly.

He stared at me without blinking.

Those eyes that once filled with arrogance were now bloodshot.

Shock, overwhelming joy, and a trace of cautious fear churned within them.

“Be... Bella?”

He lifted a hand, wanting to touch my face, but his fingers stopped just short of reaching me.

They trembled violently, as if the slightest touch would cause me to shatter like a dream.

“Is it really you? Is it truly you?”

I looked at him acting like this and felt absolutely nothing.

I raised my hand and took his icy palm, pressing it against my cheek.

The warmth of my skin met his fingers.

“It's me.” I gave him a perfect, gentle smile. “I didn't die. I'm back.”

“Bella!”

Adrian pulled me into his arms with a violent force.

His grip was so tight it felt as though he might crush my ribs. His entire body trembled.

Scalding tears instantly soaked through my shoulder.

He was crying.

The feared Regent who slaughtered countless people and struck terror throughout the realm was now holding me in his arms, crying like a lost child who had finally found his way home.

“You finally came back... I knew you weren't dead... I knew it...

“Don't leave me again. Please, Bella. Don't leave me again...”

I let him hold me.

My hands mechanically patted his back.

“I'm not leaving. I won't leave again.”

The most heartfelt promises slipped from my lips, yet my eyes drifted past his shoulder to the flickering candlelight dancing through the hall.

Cold and indifferent, I watched the flames sway.

Eighty-nine days and twenty-three hours remained.

With ten million dollars in my account, I left my exhausting job behind and started living for myself.I spent the next year traveling.I chased the northern lights.I went skydiving.I explored the depths of the ocean.Every thrill and rush of adrenaline reminded me what it felt like to be alive.Whenever my heart raced, I would think of that lifeless palace and find myself breathing even deeper, savoring the freedom I fought so hard to reclaim. It was during those travels that I met Lucien Cooper. He wasn't a prince. He wasn't a ruler. And he certainly wasn't a madman. He was simply an archaeologist with a warm smile and a steady, reassuring presence. We met outside an ancient cliffside ruin.He handed me a bottle of water and smiled.“Thirsty?”For a moment, I was caught off guard. Then I took the bottle and laughed.“Absolutely. Thanks.”Falling in love happened as naturally as breathing.Lucien never knew the details of my past.He only knew that sometimes I would drift off and st

  • After I Lost All My Emotions, the Regent Went Mad   Chapter 8

I watched the once-invincible Regent break down in tears on the screen before turning to the system.“So, can this world still be saved?”The system let out a sigh.Even its glowing orb seemed to dim.“No, the male lead's mental state has completely collapsed. He's the pillar holding this world together. If he no longer wants to live, the world will collapse with him.”It was just as I expected. After crying until he had nothing left, Adrian slowly rose to his feet. From a hidden compartment, he retrieved the seal of his office and the ceremonial sword that symbolized his authority. His voice was calm. “Since you no longer want to remain in this world, then neither do I. The road to the afterlife is too cold. I'll go with you.”He didn't choose to start a fire.He was afraid it would damage my body.Instead, he gathered me into his arms and climbed to the top of the highest tower in the capital. The night wind howled around him, whipping his cloak through the darkness.Below stretched

He bent down and pressed an impossibly gentle, reverent kiss to my lips before making his way to the dungeon below. There, Sharon and the men were bound to iron racks. What followed was so bloody that even the system couldn't bear to watch. The screen blurred.Adrian barely needed to interrogate them.Desperate to save their own lives, the men spilled everything. They explained how Sharon paid them, how she provided the drug, how she ordered them to ruin me.One of them even mimicked her venomous tone with disturbing accuracy. The evidence was overwhelming, yet Sharon continued to scream.“Adrian, I did it for you! That woman didn't love you! She was like a lifeless doll! Only by destroying her could she learn to depend on you again! Wasn't this your idea from the beginning? You approved the kidnapping! You wanted her to suffer too!”Those words became the final blow because she was right. He was part of it.If he hadn't wanted to play the hero, if he hadn't silently approved Sharon's

Adrian said nothing more.He held my body in his arms and slowly rose to his feet. The madness that consumed him seemed to vanish, replaced by a chilling calm that was far more terrifying. He glanced at the shadow guards behind him.His voice was cold enough to freeze the air.“Take them all back. Every last one of them, including Sharon. No one leaves.”“Adrian! What are you doing? We're family!”Sharon screamed in terror and tried to rush toward him, only to be forced to the ground by the guards.“Seal off this place and investigate.”His voice never wavered.“I want to know exactly what happened here. Every last detail.”With my body cradled against his chest, Adrian turned and walked away.As he passed Sharon, he paused briefly and looked down at her.It was the kind of look one reserved for the dead....The royal physicians were summoned overnight to examine my body.Even after they completed their examination and collected their samples, Adrian stubbornly refused to let anyone t

The doors burst open under a powerful kick, sending dust swirling through the air.Framed by the sunlight pouring through the doorway, Adrian looked every bit the hero racing to save the woman he loved.“Bella!”He shouted my name, his voice carrying the perfect blend of panic and devotion. He had expected to find me huddled in a corner, trembling with fear, my clothes in disarray but otherwise untouched.I would throw myself into his arms in tears. He would hold me tightly, tell me he had arrived too late, and we would reconcile.Instead, he was greeted by a lifeless body.My body lay sprawled across the cold straw, limp and motionless. My clothes were torn and tattered, bruises and scratches marring the exposed skin.My face was as pale as paper.A dried streak of blood remained at the corner of my mouth. The men stood nearby, frozen in panic, their faces even paler than the corpse before them.“What happened...?”The expression on Adrian's face froze. He staggered forward. Each step

  • After I Lost All My Emotions, the Regent Went Mad   Chapter 4

I thought our days would continue like this—my indifference against his madness, until three days later.Three days later, on the kingdom's annual Lovers' Day, Adrian said he wanted to take me to Saint Aurelia's Abbey outside the capital. It was the place where we first fell in love three years ago.“Bella, let's ask for another blessing together, all right?”He looked at me, hope shining in his eyes.“Let's pray for a lifetime together. For us never to be separated again.”I nodded.“All right.”The carriage rolled out of the capital and headed west. But when it reached a secluded mountain road, it suddenly came to a stop.Shouts erupted from all directions.A group of masked men dressed in black burst out of the forest, each carrying a sword and wearing a murderous expression.“Ambush! Protect His Highness!”The guards drew their weapons and rushed into battle.Chaos erupted instantly. At that moment, one of the attackers broke through the defensive line and charged straight toward m
