Chapter 6

Author: Shirley
The next morning, just as I was leaving the consulate after getting my exit visa, my phone blew up with messages from Cici:

"Bella! Look at the headlines!"

Confused, I opened my phone. When I saw the news, I felt like I'd been plunged into ice water.

Last night, dozens of people who bought seafood from the market run by Ava's foster parents suffered heavy metal poisoning. The seafood, it turned out, came from industrially polluted waters.

But instead of a photo of Ava's foster parents, the headshots they used were of my mom and dad.

I immediately called the paper's editor and demanded he remove my parents' photos.

But the editor hemmed and hawed, refusing. It wasn't until I threatened to have our family lawyers pay him a visit that he finally coughed up the truth.

"These photos... Miss Ava's assistant paid us a huge sum to keep quiet and specifically requested the change. The assistant also hinted that this was a PR move to protect the family's reputation, one personally approved by the Don."

A roar filled my ears, and the world went silent.

After hanging up, I stumbled into a taxi and headed straight for the Moretti Tower.

I was going to demand an explanation.

As I reached the corridor outside his office, before I could even knock, I heard the voice of Lorenzo's family advisor, Marco, from inside, filled with confusion and anger.

"Have you seen the news? The seafood stall is in trouble, and the media is using photos of Isabella's parents. Even if you're convinced Isabella was behind the poisoning, you can't let Ava use a dead woman's image to spite her. If this gets out, how does that reflect on you as Don?"

But all he got in response was Lorenzo's weary, helpless sigh. "Ava released the photos?"

He rubbed his temples, his voice filled with suppressed frustration.

"Yesterday, Isabella deliberately 'ran into' me at the harbor, and less than two hours later, people were poisoned. Ava's parents are simple folk. They would never knowingly buy polluted seafood. The only person who would use such tactics to frame them is Isabella. Who else would be so ruthless?"

"I thought she had learned her lesson, but she's still resorting to these low-down tricks. As for Ava… she likely lost her temper in retaliation. I'll handle it."

Every word was a knife, stabbing into my chest, twisting my insides with pain.

How ridiculous.

The very devotion I once had for him was now the evidence of my guilt.

Because I had once taken a bullet for him, I was now the ruthless one in his eyes.

If that was the case, then perhaps the comments were wrong too.

Lorenzo Moretti had never truly loved me.

The tenderness I mistook for love was just his duty as head of the family, his responsibility to an orphan. Nothing more.

The past decade of my life had been nothing but a ridiculous joke of my own making.

I returned to my apartment like a ghost.

Someone had leaked the address of my penthouse on the dark web, claiming that Ava and her parents were hiding there.

When I got home, the door had been splashed with scarlet paint, and the security lock had been violently pried open.

Filth was smeared on the walls my father had so carefully painted. The leather furniture my mother had chosen was slashed to ribbons.

Even the family photo of my parents and me had been slashed to pieces and thrown into the toilet.

I stood at the door, stunned, looking at the wreckage. I didn't cry, I didn't scream.

I packed my few remaining clothes into a suitcase, found the number for a cleaning company to handle the mess, and hired a real estate agent to sell the property at a fire-sale price.

With that done, I dragged my suitcase to the airport.

The board showed ten minutes until departure.

I posted the low-price purchase contract between Ava's family's stall and the unlicensed supplier, which my private investigator had found. I posted it online, along with my parents' death certificates, and tagged the Moretti Group's official account.

The caption read: My parents died ten years ago. So I ask you, how can the dead run a seafood stall that opened last week?

"As for who poisoned innocent people, I believe this signed purchase order, clearly marked 'from polluted waters,' provides the answer."

Less than five minutes after I posted it, the story exploded.

The next second, my phone blew up.

One month later. On the Falcone family's private island, in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily.I was lounging on a beach chair, sunbathing.Next to me, Dante was holding a small parasol, mixing me an Aperol Spritz with lemon, and glaring at another beige parasol not far away. Under that parasol sat Lorenzo, leaning on his cane, who had apparently come to deliver a honeymoon gift."Shameless bastard. The man can barely walk, and he's still trying to ruin our marriage."I was already used to his constant, jealous muttering. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively,"Casper, you're my legal husband. I'm wearing your ring. Why do you care what he does?"That one sentence smoothed all his ruffled feathers. Dante immediately grinned and went to get me a plate of cut watermelon and figs. The next second, my phone lit up again.A message from Lorenzo:"For the island banquet tonight, I had a set of custom jewelry delivered. It will go perfectly with the silk gown you had

Inside the castle, before the altar. The grand pipe organ played the wedding march.Wearing a lace veil with a long train, and holding the skirt of my custom gown, I walked down the aisle toward Dante at the end of the red carpet. The Cardinal stood at the center of the altar, solemnly reciting the sacred vows.As he reached the final line:"And do you, the bride, take Dante Falcone to be your lawfully wedded husband—""I object!"A hoarse, ragged man's voice shattered the serenity of the altar. An uproar instantly broke out among the guests.I instinctively turned to look. The moment I saw who it was, my heart skipped a beat.Lorenzo.He was frighteningly thin. The custom-made suit that usually gave him an air of authority now hung loosely on his frame. There was a recently stitched scar on his forehead, running from his temple to his hairline. His right leg was clearly not yet healed, and he had to lean heavily on a black ebony cane for support. He walked, step by step, leaning on hi

In the intensive care unit of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.Lorenzo slowly forced his heavy eyelids open. The family bodyguard standing by his bed let out a sigh of relief. "Don, you're finally awake!"…For the past two weeks, the biggest news across Sicily was that the Falcone family, an old-guard mafia dynasty, was having a wedding. The groom was Dante Falcone, the heir who had been kidnapped at the age of seven, miraculously survived, and had not been linked to a single woman for seventeen years. For nearly half a month, all the gossip rags had been frantically digging into the mysterious bride's background. But aside from her gender, all other details were locked behind the highest level of security, completely untraceable. For a time, the entire East Coast and European old-money circles were on tenterhooks, desperate to know who this mysterious new Falcone matriarch was.The day of the wedding.Outside the Falcone family's centuries-old castle on the coast of Taormina, a fleet

The proposal was a resounding success. The Falcone family board approved it on the spot, unanimously allocating the funds.I took the eight young analysts from my team, all recent graduates, to celebrate at a two-hundred-year-old Sicilian restaurant in the old town of Palermo. After the party, I stood outside the restaurant waiting for a car. A matte black luxury car slid silently to a stop in front of me.Dante rolled down the window, his light green eyes glinting mischievously in the streetlight, a smirk on his face."Well, if it isn't our esteemed director. Care for a ride from your loving fiancé?"Before the rest of my department could come out and see, I pulled open the passenger door and quickly got in.The car drove smoothly along the coastal road. I closed my eyes and pretended to be napping. From the driver's seat, Dante's voice, laced with complaint, suddenly broke the silence."So, when do I finally get to be your official fiancé?"Dante, sulking like a kicked puppy, began t

"Lorenzo!" I shot upright in my chair, my eyes flying open.It wasn't until I saw the minimalist light fixture above me and the glowing blue of the European stock market data on the screen in front of me that I realized I was awake.I had already left New York and had been in Sicily for almost two weeks.I had sworn to put Lorenzo Moretti behind me for good. But in the short nap I just took, I had dreamed of him again. In the dream, he was covered in blood, unconscious, and clutching something tightly to his chest.I closed my eyes and forced myself to take a deep breath of the salty Sicilian sea air, then slowly exhaled. The lingering panic and the frantic racing of my heart finally began to subside."Bad dream?"A man's light laugh came from the doorway.I looked up and saw Dante leaning against the doorframe, one hand casually in the pocket of his trousers. His light green eyes, a trait from his Spanish grandmother, caught the Mediterranean light, shining like chips of peridot."Our

The Appalachian Mountains coiled around the lawless land like a coarse noose.Lorenzo stepped out of the Agusta helicopter. Looking at the desolate mining area and abandoned trailer parks, he couldn't imagine what would have happened if he hadn't come today.Would the real Ava have been left to rot in this hell for the rest of her life? The propeller blades whipped up a fierce wind, making Lorenzo's cashmere coat flap wildly. It revealed the platinum heirloom pendant on his wrist, its cracks sealed with gold.It was the one Ava had supposedly broken by accident, the one he had sent to Geneva overnight for repair. If you didn't look closely, you would hardly notice the faint crack on the back.He raised his wrist and pressed his lips lightly to the crack. "Isabella, my Principessa. Just wait for me a little longer. I will go through hell and high water, but I will never let you go."Behind him, two bodyguards dragged a bruised and swollen Bruno out of the helicopter."Ouch—"Bruno was a
