Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Golden Time
There were countless notes like these, filling the drawer from top to bottom. I stared at the words in silence, each one a small record of a life I had once treasured—the things she had said, the things she had wanted, and all the ridiculous little ways I had tried to make her happy. Together, they held years of memories I had once believed would last forever.

Then the drawer slid shut.

At the same moment, the room seemed to grow darker.

The next day, I showed up at Eleanor's company with my lawyer and asked to see her. Just as expected, I was immediately turned away.

I didn't argue. I simply waved a hand, and someone brought me a lounge chair. I sat down, put on my sunglasses, and started playing the recording of our conversation about the company shares from the day before. I set it on repeat and let it play over and over for everyone in the lobby to hear.

Eleanor and I had founded this company together. The shares I was asking for weren't some outrageous demand. They were what I was rightfully entitled to.

The company's executives exchanged uneasy glances as the recording continued to play. By the eighth time it came around, Eleanor finally emerged from the building. She grabbed me by the wrist and dragged me into her office before shoving me inside, her eyes burning with anger.

"Daniel, what the hell are you trying to do?"

I took off my sunglasses and frowned slightly.

"Exactly what I've been saying from the beginning: I want the shares, and I want a divorce. Ms. Hayes, I have to say, your lack of reading comprehension is concerning."

Instead of getting angry, Eleanor lowered her head and laughed. When she looked back at me, her eyes were filled with open mockery.

"Daniel, if you're trying to win me back, couldn't you come up with something a little more original?"

Her reaction wasn't surprising. The last time Charles had a high fever, I'd threatened her with divorce just to get her to come home. The time before that, Charles had done nothing more than sprain his ankle, yet I'd acted like a madman, refusing to let it go simply because she had driven him home.

Both times, it had ended the same way: I'd eventually lowered my head, apologized, and backed down.

"Have you ever heard the story about the boy who cried wolf?"

I stepped back as she leaned closer.

"Don't want to choose? Fine." I gave her a cold smile. "I believe tonight is your birthday party. So, I'll give you a gift you've been dreaming about for a long time."

This time, Eleanor didn't try to stop me from leaving. Instead, she stood beside the bookshelf with her arms crossed, looking completely confident in herself.

Then she picked up the phone resting nearby. The call was still connected.

"You heard that, right? Daniel still has feelings for me. He even remembered my birthday and prepared a gift. He was just throwing a tantrum."

A man's voice came through the phone, but Eleanor cut him off before he could respond.

"And don't give me that nonsense about some system somehow mechanically removing his feelings for me. That's not even scientifically possible. How could Daniel just stop loving me like that?"

A helpless sigh came from the other end.

After a long silence, the man finally said, "Eleanor, don't take this too far.

I heard what she said about me throwing a tantrum, but I didn't slow my steps as I walked away. Instead, the corners of my mouth curled into a faint smile.

I just hoped she'd be able to stay that calm when she saw the gift.

…

Eleanor's birthday party that evening was extravagant, drawing the city's elite under one roof.

The moment I stepped into the ballroom, I spotted Charles in a black tuxedo, carrying himself like the man of the house as he moved effortlessly through the crowd, a glass of red wine in his right hand.

The moment the guests noticed me, their expressions shifted. One by one, their eyes flicked between Charles and me, curiosity written plainly across their faces.

Ignoring the stares, I walked straight toward Eleanor and held out an exquisitely wrapped gift box.

She had been lost in thought, but she seemed to sense my presence and looked up. Our eyes met, and for a brief moment, I caught a flicker of nervousness in her gaze.

Then she noticed the gift in my hands, and something changed. A faint trace of anticipation appeared in her eyes—an expression she didn't seem to realize she'd revealed.

Before either of us could say a word, Charles let out a quiet scoff, just loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.

No one was on the second floor. I scanned the area carefully, making sure it was safe before continuing up to the third floor. The moment I reached the top, something hanging in a distant corner caught my eye. The moonlight was hazy, and I couldn't risk turning on my flashlight without drawing attention to myself, so after a moment's hesitation, I cautiously made my way toward it. When I was about ten feet away, I finally realized what was hanging there—a person, to be exact, a corpse.Blood covered his entire body, and both arms hung limply above him, twisted at unnatural angles as if there were no bones left in them. I tilted my head, trying to make out his face in the dim light. Then the moon slipped out from behind the clouds, bathing the warehouse in pale light. And that's when I recognized him. He was the undercover operative I'd planted inside Eleanor's company."Shit!"The unease I'd been feeling exploded into outright panic. I spun around and sprinted for the stairs, b

After having the system analyze Eleanor's behavior more thoroughly, I knew exactly where to strike. Those words would hit her where it hurt most. And sure enough, Eleanor's expression turned cold almost instantly. The tenderness and affection she'd shown only moments ago suddenly felt like nothing more than an illusion.I stormed out of the room and slammed the door behind me hard enough to rattle the frame. I had barely managed to breathe a sigh of relief when I noticed Charles kneeling outside the door, his eyes clouded with sorrow. Autumn had settled in over the past few days, and the nighttime temperatures had dropped sharply. It was cold enough that even I would have shivered if I'd gone outside without a jacket. Yet Charles was still wearing the same suit from his engagement party. I had no idea how long he'd been waiting there, but his body was trembling from the cold, and all the color had drained from his face. The moment he heard the door open, a smile immediately spread

"Put away that clumsy act. You're making yourself look dumb."Even as I said it, Eleanor's right hand had already slipped beneath my shirt. Her fingers moved slowly across my skin, and little by little, even she seemed to lose herself in the moment. While I was scanning her blood alcohol level, the system had also detected a surge in her arousal. I even froze for a moment when I saw that.Eleanor and I had been together for five years—nearly two thousand days and nights of knowing each other, loving each other, and sharing our lives. In the beginning, we had truly loved each other. But after she became involved with Charles, all that remained for me was endless pain. I'd been trapped at the bottom of an abyss, desperately reaching for anything that might give me a foothold and pull me back to my feet. I thought Eleanor could be that foothold, so I poured every ounce of strength I had into holding on to her. Instead, she only dragged me deeper into the mud.By the time I finall

Charles' father had been so furious that he had nearly lost his mind. He sent a voice message, his voice filled with such deep hatred that every word seemed to come straight from the depths of his soul. "You! How could you, Eleanor Hayes?"Each word grew heavier than the last, as if tearing Eleanor apart with his bare hands were the only thing that could ease the hatred burning inside him. But he never got the chance to say everything he wanted. Overcome by rage, Charles' father suffered a fatal heart attack and died on the spot. By the time his secretary found him, his body was already cold.At this point, Eleanor and Charles were practically bound by a blood feud. No child in their right mind could look at evidence like this and remain blindly devoted to the person responsible. And yet, when I turned to Charles, I was shocked to see that there wasn't even a trace of hatred on his face. There was only disbelief and heartbreak. His lips trembled uncontrollably, and after taking a

Eleanor froze for only a split second. By the time she looked up and then lowered her gaze again, that familiar, gentle smile had already returned to her face. "Was all this really necessary?" There was a hint of helplessness in her voice. "Just because I'm getting engaged to Charles, you had to go this far? You even had to frame me like this just to make me bow my head?"She stared straight at me, completely unfazed by the screams and chaos coming from the video. Not a flicker of emotion crossed her face. I curled my lips into a smile, though there was nothing friendly about it. Casually spinning the microphone in my hand, I said, "Looks like Ms. Hayes isn't very happy with the gift I brought her. But that's all right. I can always give you something better."I raised the remote and aimed it at the screen, reaching for the button that would switch the video. But before I could press it, Eleanor suddenly rushed onto the stage with startling speed and snatched the remote from my h

"People who come to wish Ella a happy birthday bring gifts that money can't even buy. And you, Daniel, have to use Eleanor's credit card just to buy her a thousand-dollar purse. Honestly, it's the thought that counts, so why do you have to buy something so expensive?"Charles might as well have pointed a finger in my face and called me a worthless parasite who could only survive by clinging to a woman. In his eyes, what could someone like me possibly give Eleanor? And whatever I spent on her would still be her money in the end anyway. The people around us immediately sided with him. Their judgment shifted in an instant, and the curious looks they'd been giving me turned into open contempt. It was as if Charles had just reminded everyone exactly where they thought I belonged. My expression didn't change as I watched Eleanor slowly unwrap the gift. When she pulled away the final ribbon and opened the box, the contents were revealed. The noisy ballroom fell completely silent. As i
