Chapter 2

Autor: Sweetie Moore
Archie continued, "I beg you not to blacklist Lesley, please! She was just a little too impulsive, that's all. I'm willing to take all the punishment on her behalf!"

Archie's tone was sorrowful, yet his expression was one of steadfast acceptance, as though he were prepared to die in battle for the one he loved. His actions left the entire hall silent.

Lesley shoved me aside and hurriedly helped Archie to his feet, glaring at me with eyes full of venom.

"Forget it, Archie. Calvin is nothing but a hypocritical scumbag. There's no need to beg for mercy from a jerk like him!"

Looking at Lesley on the verge of tears, I felt my heart shatter—just like the trophy on the floor.

So, this was the stark contrast between how she treated someone she loved and someone she didn't.

I'd sponsored all of her living expenses for seven years, subjecting myself to endless ridicule from high society and willingly turning my back on my family's inheritance.

Yet all I got in return was her labeling me a hypocritical scumbag.

By this point, everyone in attendance seemed deeply moved by the poignant love story between her and Archie.

Lesley's friends, who had come to cheer her on, even began throwing their makeup compacts at me to protest the "injustice" I had allegedly made her suffer.

They seemed to have conveniently forgotten that their daily necessities—even the very cosmetics they were hurling at me—were bought entirely with my money.

In an instant, the venue erupted into a torrent of insults and abuse directed squarely at me.

Facing the hostile glares of the crowd, I couldn't help but smile bitterly. I never imagined my kindness would ultimately be turned into a weapon against me.

Clenching my fists, I tilted my head upward to forcefully hold back my tears.

[Time's up. You have failed your mission, Calvin Gardner.]

The System's cold voice rang out in my head. Only then did I remember today was the final deadline for my mission.

Seven years ago, right after Lesley saved my life from an overpass, I had been bound to this System.

It told me I had 100 chances to win her heart and marry her. If I succeeded, all of her dreams would come true, and her life would undergo a magnificent transformation.

If I failed, however, I would face punishment.

Back then, I had agreed without a moment's hesitation.

I initially thought I would accomplish the mission in no time at all. Never did I imagine that seven years would pass, only for Lesley to drift further and further away from me.

After a long bout of silence, I stared at the engagement ring pressing deep into the palm of my hand and chuckled bitterly once more.

[Fine. I lost. I'll take the punishment.]

Taking a deep breath, I ignored the remaining insults hurled at me, bracing myself for death.

To my surprise, the System's voice echoed again.

[I'll remove your saint's heart. Unbounded kindness is worthless. From now on, you'll live only for yourself.]

I froze. What did it mean to remove my "saint's heart"?

Before I could wrap my head around it, the System executed the punishment.

Instantly, memories of my past with Lesley flooded my mind, carrying me back seven years to the day we first met.

At that time, my family had fallen on hard times, and my phone constantly buzzed with calls from debt collectors. I felt like a stray, battered dog surviving in the concrete jungle of the city.

Just as I was standing on the edge of the overpass, ready to jump after having had enough of it all, Lesley pulled me back from the brink and saved my life.

Seeing how dejected I was, she took me home with her.

That was when I learned she had no parents and had never relied on anyone else.

She worked part-time jobs while studying, struggling single-handedly to support herself and her sick younger sister, Livia Cohen.

Lesley told me the future was filled with infinite possibilities, and if we persevered, the storm would soon pass and everything would fall into place.

The moonlight had shone across her face that night, illuminating my wounded heart.

Her optimism and resilience gave me the courage to keep living.

And from that moment on, only one thought had consumed my mind.

I continued, "Your so-called self-righteous love does nothing but disgust me. I don't love you anymore."Lesley froze where she knelt. Shaking her head frantically, she cried, "No, it can't be! You promised me that you would love me, protect me, and stay by my side forever…" I didn't dignify her plea with an answer. Lighting a cigarette, I spoke in a low voice. "It's too late, Lesley. Too late."Seven years ago, I was bound to a system. If you had accepted my proposal, the System would have granted your every wish and given you the world. "I exhausted all one hundred of my chances and still lost completely. As punishment, the System stripped away my compassion—my so-called saint's heart. From now on, you and I are completely free of each other. Lesley's eyes widened in shock. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed in a heap."Calvin… I'm… I'm sorry… You put up with me for seven whole years. I know I was wrong. I'm truly sorry! Just give me another chance! Just one more chance! I

Lesley had never once considered my feelings.Thinking about that, I took a deep breath and said numbly, "You despised me and called my money filthy, Lesley Cohen. And since you decided I wasn't good enough for you, I decided to let you go."So, what are you even crying about?"Her face drained of color at my words. Realization slowly dawned on her, leaving her unable to form a coherent response for a long time. "Calvin… I… You knew I only said that impulsively. You know me—I'm just sensitive because I have low self-esteem."But you must believe me when I say I never betrayed you! Nothing ever happened between Archie and me, I swear!"Panicking now, she frantically tried to explain herself, desperate for me not to misunderstand. I stared at her panicked face and let out a cold chuckle. "So? Is that supposed to justify you testing my limits over and over again?"Listen closely, Lesley. I used to love you, and that was the only reason I tolerated your antics, the only reason

Livia continued, "People will only finally begin to notice my beauty and talent once Lesley is gone! What's wrong with an elder sibling sacrificing herself for me?"I looked at the smug expressions on Archie's and Livia's faces and burst into laughter.Archie flew into a rage. "You stubborn jerk! Hurry up and transfer the money to us right now! If not, I'll post Lesley's nudes all over the internet! When that happens, the entire world will condemn you and your family to death! We'll see how you—"Before he could finish, Lesley marched in and slapped him hard across the face. Her eyes were bloodshot and blazing with fury. "Archie Gould, you shameless piece of shit!"Archie paled when he saw Lesley. Clearly, he'd never expected her to be there. His voice trembled as he stammered, "L-Lesley? W-What are you d-doing here?"I offered a small shrug, a faint, detached smile playing on my lips. "Lesley came to talk about this today, but you barged in before we could begin."Archie shook

Archie continued in the video, "We're just poor kids from a mountain village! We don't know anything about our rights. Everyone, please, help us! Stand up for us!"The comments section beneath the video was immediately flooded with vile insults and malicious rumors about me. "So what if he's rich? Does having more money than everyone else suddenly give him the right to act like he's better than us? Expose him! Doxx him online!""I've got inside information that the heir to the Gardner family has a really fucked up private life! He sleeps around with just anyone!""He thinks he's all that just because he's rich? We're all watching you! God's watching you! Just wait till karma catches up to you!""How dare he look down on us villagers? I'm so mad I'm shaking.""Report him! Report him to the authorities! He likes bullying others, doesn't he? Then let's ruin his company for good!"Just like that, the company's stock price plummeted as angry netizens lashed out to dispense their bra

"If you don't, you'll be the one in huge trouble when the company crashes!" Lesley yelled at me.I could tell she was deliberately trying to provoke me. But I'd long since lost those emotional tethers, and I wanted nothing more than to laugh at her absurd threat. In the past, I had repeatedly chosen to compromise and submit to her out of love and gratitude for saving my life. But in her eyes, I was just a good-for-nothing spoiled brat who had the audacity to defy her.She thought I would abandon all my dignity and fall back in line at the snap of her fingers. But ever since I lost my "saint's heart", my mind had never been clearer. Nothing she did could bother me anymore. As for the debt I owed her for saving my life, I believed I had already repaid it in full over the seven years we spent together. I owed her nothing now. Our relationship had eroded long ago, worn down by her constant trampling of my dignity and endless testing of my limits. It didn't matter how far she'd gon

Archie's qualifications and abilities had never met the company's standards to begin with. Over the years, he had caused me countless problems, racking up losses of more than a million dollars. As for Lesley, despite her exceptional talent and capability, her performance had plummeted ever since Archie joined the team.In fact, many long-time clients who once specifically requested her had gradually grown disappointed and taken their business to rival firms instead. Yet, Lesley carried on as if nothing mattered, doing whatever she pleased. I didn't have the heart to fire her at the time. I was constantly worried that she wouldn't be able to find another job in the current economy, so I let her stay. But the company existed to make money, not to hand out charity. I had no obligation to keep two employees around who only bled me dry. Before I could respond, Archie trailed into the office after her, feigning refinement as he spoke softly. "Please don't act impulsively, Mr. Gard
