My brother-in-law passed away in an accident. Out of pity for his widow, my husband decided to be the breadwinner for both families. After that, my husband and son both gave all their love to my widowed sister-in-law. On her birthday, my husband and son reserved a restaurant in town for her party. I was plucking corn in the field when I started bleeding, a sign that I was miscarrying. I called my husband, begging him to come home and take me to the hospital. However, he scolded me angrily, calling me a liar. “What the hell are you talking about? I haven’t touched you in months! How could you be pregnant?” My son grabbed the phone impatiently as well. “Mom, the teacher said lying is wrong! Aunt Laura’s blowing out the candles now, bye!” We had been married for seven years, yet they had completely forgotten that today was my birthday too. Despairing, I dialed another number. “Mother, I changed my mind. I’m going back to inherit the clinic.”

Chapter 1

It was the harvest season. When I was busy in the fields, I accidentally slipped on a cob of corn and fell. As I got up, I felt a twisting pain in my lower abdomen.

I limped home and called my husband on the landline, begging him to take me to the hospital.

However, Seamus Chandler assumed I was lying to get out of my chores, so he berated me. “What the hell are you talking about? I haven’t touched you in months! How could you be pregnant?”

Even my son did not believe me. “Come on, Mom, you’re just making excuses to laze off. My teacher said it’s not good to lie, so stop pretending! Oops, Aunt Laura’s coming. We’re going to blow the candles now, bye!”

He hung up before I could even say another word.

A month ago, Seamus had gotten dead drunk at a wedding in the village. He had pinned me down as soon as he returned to our room.

I had been happy at first. I thought the wedding reminded him of our happier times together, so he was finally about to return to me.

In the height of his passion, however, he called his sister-in-law’s name instead.

No wonder he assumed I was lying when I told him I was pregnant.

Today was my birthday, yet my husband and son were out celebrating an outsider’s birthday. I held my lower abdomen and put down the receiver, my blood running cold.

The pain was intensifying. I knew that I had lost this baby for sure.

Lying on the bed, I gripped the covers tightly. It felt like there was something clawing at me from the inside, dragging my organs out. I moaned in agony as my blood soaked the sheets.

After four hours of blood-curdling pain, I finally came to a realization. It was time to leave.

It was evening by the time I managed to pull myself out of bed. After making myself a bowl of soup to restore my energy, I dialed a name I had memorized by heart.

“Mother? Can I still inherit the clinic?”

I was born to a family of doctors. Eight years ago, I met Seamus, who had been painting by the riverside.

Back then, he was handsome, gentlemanly, and caring. I had decided to marry him from the first time we met.

My parents had opposed the marriage, so I eloped with him behind my family’s backs and despite their protests. After that, my relationship with them was never the same.

Five years into our marriage, Seamus’ brother was driving their mother to the hospital in the city when his motorcycle suddenly lost control and veered off a cliff. Both of them died on the spot.

My father-in-law had a heart attack when he heard the news and died on the way to the hospital.

Everyone felt bad for my widowed sister-in-law. As a result, my husband decided to take her in under his wing as well.

I wept in protest, but Seamus persuaded me with his silver tongue. “Trust me, Autumn, you’re the only one I love. Back then, my brother had quit school so that my family would have enough money to fund my studies. Now that his wife is a widow, I can’t just leave her to die!”

I thought he was good for his word. I thought he would only watch over her daily needs.

However, everything changed once she moved into our house.

Before long, I heard laughter from the courtyard. I got up slowly, holding the table for support. The moment I turned my head, I met Seamus’ eyes as he was coming in.

“What’s with the basin outside the door? Where did all the blood come from?”Seamus looked at me, confused. “Autumn, why do you look so pale?”My sister-in-law Laura was coming into the house when she stopped at the smell. She pointed at the water in the basin, pinched her nose, and declared, “Geez, Autumn, you should've prepared beforehand if you knew you were going to get your period! Look, you stained all the sheets.”Seamus frowned in disgust. “Clean it up, Autumn. What if someone else sees this? It's embarrassing!”I dragged my heavy feet over slowly and poured the water into the wastewater bucket.Laura sniggered, then turned to Seamus with concern in her voice. “Seamus, since Autumn's bed has been sullied, why don't you spend the night in my room? You should get a good night's sleep so you can go to work on time tomorrow. What do you say?”Seamus’ ears quickly turned red, and he cleared his throat. “Sure. That's a good idea.”Before this, they would at least keep their fl

Seamus' face darkened with rage.Meanwhile, Laura seemed to remember something and brought a box out of her room. “By the way, Autumn, you still don't have a mobile phone, do you? Seamus bought me a new one for my birthday yesterday, so you can have my old one. I'm not using it anymore, anyway.”My hands clenched into fists. I had been in so much pain yesterday that I could barely stand, yet I had to drag myself home under the scorching sun to call my husband on the landline. At the very same moment, he was giving her the latest mobile phone model as a birthday present.I shoved her hand aside and headed back into my room. However, she cried out and fell to the floor. Laura wailed, holding her stomach. “If you didn't want it, Autumn, you could've just told me! Why did you shove me like that? What should I do, Seamus? My stomach hurts so bad…”“What did you do, Autumn?!” Seamus glared at me and carried Laura into her room.He quickly called the village doctor, Dr. Jensen, who c

Seamus was beside himself with fury. “Autumn, how could you be so cruel?! You know Laura is pregnant, yet you tried to kill her! I was wrong about you, you disgust me!”Thomas jabbed a finger at me too, his eyes bloodshot. “Aunt Laura is always so nice to me! How could you try to kill her?! You're the worst mother in the whole village. I wish you had been pushed into the sea instead!”Seamus carried Laura on his back and left without looking back. Thomas even threw a seashell at me before following them. The shell sliced open my skin under my eye, but I could barely feel a thing. I just stood rooted to the spot, tears flowing freely.Luckily, I could finally leave this accursed place tomorrow. I stayed by the seaside until late that night. When I got home, the house was completely dark.As soon as I entered my room, however, I saw Seamus sitting on a chair, waiting for me. “Autumn, you're back.”I brushed my teeth wordlessly, ignoring him. Seamus took my hand, his tone unna

“But I have to admit, you're pretty smart. Pretending to be pregnant got that moron Seamus all wrapped around your finger! Once he divorces your sister-in-law, you'll be his lawfully-wedded wife. You wouldn't forget me then, would you?”Laura giggled. “Of course not, Kevin. You're the one I love forever! After I marry Seamus, I can kill him in an untimely accident. He keeps yapping about his unlucky fool of a little brother, anyway. How nice, the four of them will be reunited in the underworld!“After that, I'll inherit the entire family fortune, and we can live happily ever after!”Kevin smirked. “Guess you still have some heart. It's a shame, though. That sister-in-law of yours has a pretty nice body. I wish I could have a taste…”Laura smacked his shoulder crossly. “Don't praise her! That Autumn Snowe is always acting high and mighty. So what if she's a bit more educated than me? She still lost to me in the end!“She even had to grit her teeth through a miscarriage the other da

Seamus roared furiously and grabbed a fistful of Laura's hair, smashing her into the wall. “You bitch! You killed my mother and brother!”Kevin realized the diversionary tactics were working well, so he quickly added, “Also, she killed your wife's baby!”Seamus stopped. “My wife's baby? What baby?”“Your wife was pregnant, but Laura killed the baby with some medicine before she could even tell you!”Laura's face was covered in blood. She had been feigning unconsciousness, but she immediately crawled to Kevin at that latest accusation. “You bastard! You're the one who gave me the idea and provided the medicine! You're an accomplice too! Don't think you can get away either!”The two of them had been passionately making love just minutes ago, but now they had turned on each other like a pair of rabid dogs. On the other hand, Seamus had frozen into a statue. His fingers were clenched into fists, his nails digging into his palms.Autumn had been telling the truth over the phone that

Now, I had stumbled back home, dejected and with nowhere else to go. Nevertheless, my family welcomed me back with open arms and did not blame me in the slightest. In the vast living room, the nanny brought me a hot plate of food. “Ms. Snowe, your mother has missed you every day since you left!”My mother turned away to wipe her tears, while my father patted her back gently. “Our daughter's finally back, isn't she? Cheer up. From now on, our family will always stay together!”I hugged my parents and sobbed, swearing to fulfil my childhood dream and stop making them worry. After returning home, I spent every day in our family clinic, treating patients alongside my mother and regaining my past confidence. Fortunately, I had kept my old medical books all these years and retained my knowledge. As such, I quickly got back into gear and even found the time to get some certification. At first, some patients refused my treatment because I was too young. They assumed I would not have t

“Shut up!” I smacked Thomas across the face with all my strength. The boy stiffened, holding his face as his eyes reddened.I had never so much as scolded him all his life, but it was high time I taught this son of mine a lesson!“Thomas Chandler, do you still not know what you did wrong?! You disrespected your own mother just because someone else was a little nice to you, and even now you're an unremorseful coward! You don't deserve to call yourself my son! Your classmates are right. How have I raised you all your life, huh? If you still refuse to repent, I'll forget I ever had a son like you!”Thomas stayed rooted to the spot. When he saw the fury on my face, he paused and then lowered his head. Seamus hurriedly grabbed my hand. “See, Autumn, I knew you still cared about us. The boy still needs his mother! Both of us need you! I'm sorry, I really am. Let's go home, I promise I'll be good to you from now on. I'll cherish our family! If you want to be a doctor, I'll support you

I smiled at him and got into his car. I put my arms over his shoulders just like I used to when I was a child and asked him softly, “You heard everything, didn’t you?”He choked. “Yes.“I wanted to rush in and sock that shameless bastard in the face, but… Luckily, my darling daughter has grown to be so brave and strong. You don’t need me to defend you anymore, haha!”I could hear what he was implying. He was afraid showing up would embarrass me, so he hid in the corner and watched, waiting to see if he should jump in.My tears flowed quietly.Of the three men who showed up today, one pissed me off, one needed me to teach him a lesson, and one made me cry from guilt. The next day, my father left early in the morning even though he had retired ages ago and only arrived home at lunch. He greeted me with a smile, rubbed his wrist, and returned to his room.Through a crack in the door, I heard him tell my mother that he had gotten justice for me. My heart tightened, and I served up
