I told him on the ninth step of the Temple stair, in eleven words, with the square watching.

I had thought about how to do it on the way down and had arrived at nothing better than saying it. There is no arrangement of that sentence that improves it. You cannot approach a man gently with the news that the person who taught him to come through a window is the person who signed for a woman in a cot.

He did not argue.

That frightened me more than an argument would have. Cassian argues about ever
Lady Lovelock

Two cups poured, and he has been sitting there since noon working out how to start. The thing Elara cannot get round: if Rowan wanted her dead she has been dead since Tuesday. He has had her alone in six rooms this week. He gave her the method she used to walk straight toward him. Also, quietly, the line I am proudest of in this chapter belongs to Cassian: "We are going north, and I am going to be no use to you at all when we get there, and I would like you to know that in advance rather than discover it." Next chapter he talks. Do you want him guilty or do you want him forgiven? Comment, because I genuinely have not decided how much mercy this book has in it.

Lord Aske found the flaw at a quarter to nine on the morning of the quarter-day, and brought it to Master Pell himself, shaking, because he is afraid of everything and does it anyway."The Instrument of Sederunt," he said, "requires the crown to be set. The charter says she is crowned by being told. But the charter cannot amend the Instrument. Only a crowned monarch can amend the Instrument." He put the page down on Pell's desk as though it might bite him. "I am not objecting. I am telling you before somebody else finds it in the middle."Pell looked at it for a long time. Then he looked at me."I found it at four this morning, madam," he said. "I have been reading the Instrument since. It says the crown is to be set upon the head of the monarch." He turned a page with one inky finger. "Or before them."Lord Aske sat down on the registrar's step."Before," I said."Before," said Master Pell. "It is a very old clause. I believe it was meant for a king who had broken his neck. It is als

The difficulty with being a queen, I discovered at eleven o'clock that night at Mara's table, is that you can no longer ask anybody anything.Everything a queen asks is a writ. It goes out of her mouth with a seal on it whether she wants one or not. I had spent a year learning that a document properly witnessed outranks any man in the room, and I had become, in the space of four days, a document. If I crossed Cooper Street and knocked on a door and asked a question, the man behind it would be answering the Crown.I had read his ledger twice by then. I had been told. Every page. The sundial at Thornlea was there, and the horse named after a bishop, and the man who wrote four letters about a pear. And in the margins, in the last months, there were small notes in the same square hand that made my throat close. Copied from the page before. I do not remember this. And once, beside a whole paragraph about a spring morning in the first life: I believe this happened. I have no way to know.Th

"The Queen of Avelune should be of a House," said my father, at the foot of the Temple steps, in the snow. "Let it be the one she was born in. Strike it, and House Vale will seal your charter before noon."I looked at the instrument in his hands. I had drafted it myself, it was still the best thing I had ever written, and it had my name on it, discharged."No," I said."Elara—""That is a term, Father. Lord Edric offered me one on the floor of the Chamber, and I refused his, and his was kinder." I did not raise my voice. The Temple steps carry. "I was discharged out of your House on an instrument, properly witnessed, and I was right to be. The man at the east gate wrote me through as one other, name disputed. It is the most accurate thing anybody has put on paper about me, and I am keeping it."He stood there with it. He had been a handsome man once, and he was still a well-dressed one."Then what do you want from me?"The charter was under my arm. I did not need to open it. I had wri

The key to Octavia Ashgrave's cabinet was on a black ribbon round her neck, and she took it off in the Temple's lower hall and put it into my left hand without being asked, and without a single condition."I did not tell you in order to bargain," she said. "I told you because it was accurate. You would have found them in a month. I did not think the youngest had a month of cups to spare.""Why do you care?""I do not care. I dislike waste." She sat down on the Temple's bench as though it were her own. "Eleven records, Majesty, eleven years of work, and a subject who can do what no daughter of the line has ever done. I should like to see what you do with the others. I will not see it if they have been dosed into a bed."Cassian and Brother Idris went to the Glass Quarter with the key and two Temple brothers and a lamp, and were back before the ninth bell with eleven folders tied in black tape, in the handwriting I had read for twenty years of my own life in a locked library.I opened t

"I hold the keys of the jewel house for my House," said Corin, "until somebody takes them off me. I read the inventory last night because I thought one person ought to, before it was put on anyone." He looked past me at the seventh bed, and at Seraphina sitting beside it, and understood what he was looking at, and took his hat off. "I am sorry. I will come back." "No," I said. "Read it here. It concerns them. That is why." So Corin Blackthorn stood at the foot of the seventh bed in the stone chamber, with four women sitting against the wall on blankets and thirty-four still lying in their rows with their eyes on the ceiling, and he unrolled the Treasury roll and read the entry aloud, in the voice he had used to welcome my claim. THE CROWN OF AVELUNE, NEW WROUGHT. OF THE SILVER OF THE OLD FITTINGS OF THE UNDER-CHAMBER, THAT IS TO SAY FORTY-ONE BANDS, ONE TO EACH BED, THE SAID CHAMBER BEING MADE NEW IN STONE, AND THE BANDS NO

Octavia Ashgrave did not come to the seventh bed. She did not need to. She looked up from the breastbone under her hands, forty feet down the row, and read the woman's face the way I read a clause, and I watched her decide how to say it. "Can she be put back?" I said. "Not to me," said Ashgrave. "To her. You wrote the writ." I had written it an hour before, and here it was already, asking to be kept. So Ashgrave came, drying her hands on her apron, and stood at the foot of the seventh bed where the woman could see her without turning her head, and told her. "You came up on your own. Nobody brought you. The depth I held you at is gone, and I cannot find it again, and neither can you." She did not soften it and she did not make it harder. "If I had begun six hours ago I might have brought you the rest of the way. I did not begin. You have until the morning. A little past it, perhaps."
