Chapter 1

작가: Not Drunk
I curled up inside the closet, frantically breathing in the scent Mom had left behind.

Her clothes always smelled sweet, like gardenias.

I buried my face in her clothes and felt my life slipping away.

The closet was pitch-black, just like the night Mom left us.

But this time, I wasn’t afraid.

The strange voice had said that as long as I gave up my life, Mom could come back.

Then Dad wouldn’t have to be in so much pain.

I closed my eyes, and my consciousness gradually began to fade.

When I regained consciousness, I found the robot standing in standby mode in the living room.

I floated in the air and curiously reached out to touch its head.

It had a round head and could produce a voice just like mine.

That was why Dad had named it Otto.

He said he was going to bring Mom back, so he had Otto take care of my meals, bedtime, and homework.

I was so happy.

With Otto around, Dad wouldn’t have to work so hard anymore.

But the next day, Otto had changed.

It didn’t cook for me. Instead, several brown pellets popped out of its belly.

Otto’s voice was still sweet.

[Here’s your food for today!]

“Otto, Otto, I want Mom’s scrambled eggs.”

[Rose, as a little kitty, you can only eat cat food.]

I thought Otto had malfunctioned, so I tried pressing the reset button on its body.

But Otto only tilted its head and replayed a recorded message.

[Pet Mode activated. To make adjustments, please contact the administrator.]

I called Dad.

It took him a long time to answer.

There was a lot of noise on the other end, with several adults talking and machines roaring in the background.

Dad’s voice was hoarse, and his tone was impatient.

“Rose, haven’t I told you not to call me unless it’s important?”

“Dad, Otto is broken… It only gives me…”

I hadn’t finished speaking before he cut me off.

“Didn’t I ask Sophie to check on you every day? Why are you lying, Rose?”

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Dad’s voice trembled with tears on the other end.

After Mom returned to her own world because Sophie had grown too close to Dad, he seemed to become a completely different person.

He stopped seeing Sophie and buried himself in the lab instead.

He searched desperately for a way to bring Mom back.

Sophie had no choice.

Whenever she came to visit, a frightening glint filled her eyes.

Later…

I frantically searched through my hazy memories when I suddenly heard the front door.

The lock clicked.

Heavy footsteps sounded, and a flicker of joy crossed my eyes.

Dad was home!

I covered Mom’s ears, not wanting her to hear those words. As far as I was concerned, I would have done anything to bring Mom back.Mom watched Sophie being taken away as the house fell silent once again. She returned to the bedroom and took my hand again.“She was right, Rose.”Before she could finish, tears as large as raindrops fell onto the back of my hand.“I knew exactly what kind of person she was, yet I still left.“I chose to live for myself again, but in doing so, I abandoned you.”I shook my head desperately. No!Mom, that wasn’t true! You only wanted to live for yourself again. Before you were a mother, you were a person in your own right. But it was useless. My voice couldn’t reach her ears.My arms passed straight through her shoulders.I held Mom, but she couldn’t feel a thing.Dad walked in from the living room and knelt in the bedroom doorway. He stayed there for a long time, until darkness fell again, until the officers came to take away my little body.Mom bent down

I watched Dad walk around Sophie, ignoring her desperate explanations. Then he dropped to his knees in front of my body.“Rose, I know I was wrong.”“Wake up, please. Wake up.”Mom gently took my hand and spoke softly.“Rose, look. The person who hurt you is here. I told you that people who do bad things will eventually face the consequences.”“Don’t worry. I will make sure she pays.”Sophie staggered back, panic spreading across her face.“Daniel, Mrs. Dawson, you must have misunderstood.“I don’t know how Rose ended up like this… I really don’t! I came to see her every day and cooked for her. Maybe Rose ate something she shouldn’t have…”I stuck my tongue out at Sophie in disgust.I would never eat random things!Mom had taught me better.“Are you saying Rose ate the cat food herself?”Mom looked up at her.“You must have deleted all of Otto’s data, right? The security footage, feeding records, and operating logs—you erased them all.”Something seemed to cross Mom’s mind, and she gav

Her voice was hoarse, yet carried a quiet firmness that allowed no argument.Dad pressed the answer button. On the other end, Sophie’s voice was syrupy and sweet.“Daniel, is Rose all right? I left in such a hurry yesterday that I forgot to tuck her in.“She didn’t catch a cold, did she? Should I come by and check on her?”Mom said nothing. She simply listened with an expressionless face.I floated behind her and watched her profile, suddenly overcome by unease.I had a sinking feeling that Mom was about to do something drastic. She picked up the phone and spoke in a frighteningly calm voice.“Hello? It’s me.”There was suddenly silence on the other end. After a long pause, Sophie finally spoke.“Mrs. Dawson? You’re really back?”Even I could hear the false sweetness in Sophie’s voice.Mom heard it even more clearly.“Mrs. Dawson, while you were gone, Daniel missed you terribly. He told me more than once that he had to bring you back, and he finally did it. I’m truly happy for him.”M

Mom’s voice was soft, as if she were afraid of waking me.But this time, I didn’t open my sleepy eyes and call her Mom in that soft, childish voice.“I’m home. Should I make you scrambled eggs? I’ll add just a little sugar—the way you like them.”I let out a happy squeal, and drool slipped from the corner of my mouth.Mom’s scrambled eggs were the best.Even Dad couldn’t make them taste the same. When Dad heard that, he fell silent for a long time before telling me, “No one makes it like your mom.”…“You’ve eaten so much candy you already have several cavities. I wasn’t here to keep an eye on you. Did you secretly eat more candy?”I shook my head and puffed out my chest.I hadn’t secretly eaten any candy!Besides, Dad hadn’t bought me any candy since Mom left.My confidence suddenly faded, and I slumped behind Mom.“I bought you a new hair clip. It’s pink, with a little flower on it. Open your eyes and see if you like it.“I’m not going anywhere ever again. I’ll never leave you again.

Mom stood frozen, as if someone had nailed her to the floor.Dad squeezed past her and flipped the light switch on the wall. The lights came on.The living room was empty, and a thin layer of dust covered the coffee table.Otto stood in the corner, its eyes flickering when it detected their arrival.[Administrator detected. She turned and walked toward my room.“Rose? Are you in there? I’m home. Open the door.”I followed behind Mom and shouted as loudly as I could.“Mom, I’m here!”But Mom could no longer hear me.Mom rushed into the room, searching everywhere, but couldn’t find me.Desperate, she searched the entire house. “She’s lying! Sophie is lying!”I planted my hands on my hips and glared at her.Ever since Dad took me to the lab, I began to feel that something in our home had changed.Mom smiled less and less, while Dad came home later and later.Sophie, on the other hand, started coming over more often. She brought me toys and laughed as she pinched my cheeks.Mom watched it all with a cold expression, her eyes filled with something I couldn’t understand.Only later did I realize it was the despair of watching her family slowly fall apart—the despair that consumed her until the day she left this world. No one knew where she had gone.Dad went mad, searching everywhere and questioning everyone in an attempt to find a clue about where she went.Sophie came running over soon after. She hugged Dad and cried.“Don’t be like this. She’ll be all right.”At the time, I thought she looked heartbroken. She must have cared about Mom very much. Now, thinking back on it, I only felt sick.Sophie was about to
