Chapter 2

Author: Tangle H
Ah. Derek's spoiled little sister, Lydia Blackwood.

She had worn gold to the wedding on purpose, to outshine me.

But after a whole night of carrying on, her foundation had started to break up, flaking off in dry little pieces every time she spoke.

"You were never good enough for my brother!"

She pointed at me and shrieked, "He had just taken you as his mate when his plane went down. You must have cursed him, and now you have the nerve to seduce his brother on your wedding night?"

I watched her makeup crack with every word and fought a laugh.

Hester sobbed theatrically, "Lydia, don't. Selena will run to the Alpha King and have our pack punished. We can't afford to offend her."

"So what?"

She looked at me with contempt. "Every wolf alive knows the Luna Queen is the one Alpha King Leon Windsor trusts most. What does Selena have besides a few drops of Windsor blood? Without her brother, she couldn't even get through the gates of Moonfall Bridge!"

The amusement went out of Kane's eyes.

"Mind your tone."

His voice wasn't loud, but the force of his Alpha dominance filled the room in an instant.

Only then did I notice it. Kane carried an Alpha's scent too?

Kane was supposedly just an illegitimate son, yet his dominance was even stronger than Derek's.

Sure enough, Lydia went pale, and a whimper forced its way out of her throat.

Lydia recovered quickly. Humiliated and furious but too frightened to challenge Kane, she trembled as she spat, "Who do you think you are... you dare... you dare warn me?"

Kane remained against my headboard. He did nothing more than narrow his eyes.

Even so, the killing intent was unmistakable.

One more step and he might really tear out her throat.

And still she screamed, "Mom, do something about Kane! A pup who crawled out of a garbage heap is walking all over me!"

So loud.

I crooked a finger at her. "Lydia. Come here."

Before her mind could react, her body stiffened and moved toward me on its own.

"What? He's nothing but an unwanted—"

Smack!

I slapped her.

She slammed into the vanity, and two bloody teeth rolled onto the carpet.

The room went quiet.

She was stunned.

I shook out my hand. What a sin.

"Sorry. I thought the Blackwoods were made of sturdier stuff."

She probably wouldn't be eating the leftover wedding steak tonight.

"Selena!"

Hester screamed, rushed over, and pulled her daughter into her arms.

"You killed my son, and now you have hurt my daughter! Will nothing satisfy you but destroying this whole family?"

She sobbed hysterically, shouting that she would summon the pack elders and bring charges against me.

The corridor filled up fast with pack members drawn by the noise.

Every one of them pointed at me.

"Fine! Then let's bring formal charges."

I pulled the door open and ordered the royal guards, "Contact my brother immediately. Have Derek's crash site searched again."

Hester's crying cut off.

I turned to look at her.

"If they find remains, send every fragment for identification."

I let the final demand land hard. "If he's dead, I want the body!"

"No!"

Hester answered too quickly, and every head turned toward her.

The color drained out of her face.

"I mean... there's no need to trouble the Alpha King," she said, licking her lips nervously.

"Weren't you just screaming that I cursed him to death?"

"I..."

Of course she had no answer.

Because Derek was never on that plane.

If the royal investigators actually dug in, his fake death would be exposed tonight.

Lydia panicked too. She grabbed Hester's arm and lowered her voice. "Derek's plan comes first. We'll kill this bitch when we get another chance."

...?

Any chance I'm not deaf?

Planning my murder from ten feet away was no different from whispering it in my ear.

Hester rose, forcing herself back into the role of dignified matriarch. "Never mind! For Derek's sake, I'll let it go tonight. The pack has business to handle. We're leaving."

Hester and Lydia rushed out.

They moved as if Derek might rise from the dead if they waited another second.

Once the door shut, I turned to evict Kane from my bed.

"The show's over, handsome. Go find yourself a guest room."

Kane paused, then cocked his head with a scoff.

His torn shirt hung loose from his shoulders, framing a face that was as handsome as it was dangerous.

"Use me and toss me aside?"

His smile should have put me at ease.

Instead, the fur along my nape suddenly stood on end.

Why did his commanding tone sound so familiar...

When the coronation ended, the priest did not leave.By tradition, an Alpha King's mating ceremony was more elaborate. He and his chosen mate had to seal their bond publicly at the Moon Goddess Festival, with a priest as their witness.Kane had clearly prepared for this. He had even brought the documents. The priest opened the mating contract, but he did not begin the prayer."Miss Ella, before I witness this bond, I must confirm that your mating bond with Derek Blackwood has been dissolved."There it was.I knew there was no avoiding this."Derek and I were never truly mated."The crowd below the altar stirred again.I looked at the Moon Goddess Stone and spelled it out, one word at a time."At our wedding, all we completed before the Moon Goddess's altar was a vow declaring our choice of mate."That vow created only a faint life-link. We were supposed to proceed to the bonding ceremony, but Derek ran away before it even began."So Derek and I were never bonded, and we never marked ea

On the day of the Moon Goddess Festival, I wore moon-white ceremonial robes and stepped onto the high dais built of moonstone. The Alphas of every major pack were gathered below the altar.I laid both hands on the Moon Goddess Stone at the center.A second later a hundred snowy owls burst out of the deep forest and circled the altar three times.Silver-white wings blotted out the moonlight, as if the Moon Goddess had truly come down. One after another, they knelt."By the Goddess, she has chosen Selena!"My face stayed solemn while I laughed to myself.Thank you, Viola. Those owls had been trained beautifully.Just then a royal guard covered in blood stumbled up onto the altar."Your Highness, there's trouble at the palace!"Moonfall Bridge's army has breached the royal defenses!"The altar erupted into chaos.Every Alpha rose at once.A second guard arrived right behind him."Leon and Viola are dead! The Moonfall Bridge wolves are advancing on the altar!""Moonfall Bridge?"Someone's

That night Derek came storming into my bedroom."Selena, how dare you play me?"I will never mark you. Try me."Viola's perfume still clung to his guard's uniform.I blinked innocently."I did exactly what you asked."What, you don't like it?""You vicious she-wolf!"Derek's eyes were red with fury."I was even going to give you a pup. Clearly, you don't deserve to be the mother of my child!"Every day, more nonsense."Selena."The low voice came from behind me.Kane walked out of the bathroom in nothing but black trousers, shoulders and back bare."The night's still young. Are you really going to waste it on him?"Mm.The Master was playing my candidate number one again.Derek froze. The moment Derek recognized Kane, his entire face twisted."Selena, you shameless bitch!"Let him curse me.I wasn't Selena anyway.I smiled at his misery, only for Kane to cut me a warning glance. His look plainly promised that he would deal with me later. He turned back to Derek and rolled his wrist."Y

Hester looked smug at the start of the memorial. She probably thought the guests had come out of respect for Derek as an Alpha. But when she heard everyone praising me, she slunk back to Lydia's side. "All that money, and instead of helping her mate's pack, she gives it to outsiders. What a performance."This is boring. I'm going to get some air out back."There was my opening.I gave Wren a look, and she slipped out after her.Half an hour later, Wren returned and reported quietly, "It's done."Good. My turn."The memorial rite is about to begin. Why hasn't Mrs. Blackwood returned?"Would you all help me look for her?"I headed straight for the back courtyard and shoved open the door to the third guest room.Then..."Ah!"I screamed in the most anguished voice of my life, "Mrs. Blackwood! How did you end up in bed with Viola's father, Bertram Ashcroft?"A collective gasp swept through the guests.Wasn't he mate candidate number four, officially certified by the Werewolf Council? How h

The next day I held a grand memorial service for Derek. Many of the royal city's most prominent figures attended. They stood before Derek's portrait for perhaps half a minute, then crowded around to thank my mother and me for directing relief supplies to the southern mining region after an explosion."Without you opening the warehouses and moving supplies in advance, who knows how many more wolves would have been displaced and forced to live as rogues?""Leon was still approving the paperwork when your relief convoy rolled out."I scratched my head.No need to thank me.It wasn't my money anyway. The Master was royalty too. The crown lived on pack taxes; sending aid wherever disaster struck was simply what it owed the packs.Someone muttered that Leon cried poverty every time there was a disaster, and a companion cut him off before he finished. An elderly engineer cut through the chatter and hurried toward me, beaming. "The portable water purifier you designed is finished.""They teste

The day after Viola was confined, Derek "came back from the dead."He put on a royal guard's uniform and a mask and slipped in through the back door.First, Wren kicked him into the reflecting pool. Then mate candidate number two mistook him for an intruder and landed two punches.Mate candidate number three, the priest, kindly forced a bowl of scalding soup down his throat. Finally, mate candidate number four, full of pent-up rage, gave him a whipping.Derek finally reached me battered from head to toe.I was sunbathing in the garden and lifted one lazy eyelid."You're here?"Derek stopped short."So you knew?"Without waiting for an answer, he came to his own conclusion."No wonder you have been going after Viola."You were jealous."I slowly craned my neck to stare at him.Had this man left his brain at the crash site?"Let's do this."Derek clenched his jaw as if he were about to make the ultimate sacrifice."I can give you what you've always wanted. I'll mark you right now."In re
