Chapter 3

Author: Tangle H
Early the next morning, my brother Leon sent over several crates of jewelry, antiques, and property deeds to console me, his newly widowed sister.

Viola Ashcroft, the Luna Queen, sent gifts soon after.

Every one of hers came in pairs.

Matching watches, matching wine glasses, and a pair of cashmere pillows embroidered with Derek's name and mine.

The text in front of me started scrolling again.

[The heroine sent all this to twist the knife! She wants to see if the side character has really let the hero go!]

[What, taking Kane wasn't clear enough?]

[The point is those pillows were on the Luna Queen's bed last night, and they still carried a trace of Derek's cedar scent.]

[Not just that. The heroine's scent has already changed. She is carrying the hero's pup!]

Ugh...

I yanked my hand away from the pillow and wiped it on my skirt.

What kind of kink do these two have?

They had an affair, then mailed me the evidence so I could smell it?

So they wanted to provoke me. Fine.

Viola's personal assistant watched me, waiting for me to crack.

"Miss Selena, the Luna Queen hopes these gifts will remind you of the happy times you shared with Alpha Derek."

I wasn't about to give her the satisfaction. I smiled back.

"How thoughtful of her. I was worried Kane and I didn't have any matching things yet. Everything here comes in pairs, exactly enough for us."

The assistant's smile froze.

The pack members around us went quiet, and a few had to bite back laughs.

Before long, they scattered to spread the news.

Gossip that explosive? Who could resist?

I was heading back to my room to catch up on sleep when I passed the storehouse and caught a familiar cedar scent.

Oh.

So my dearly departed mate had chosen today to haunt the place?

Then I'd better find out what the two of them were up to.

I pulled up the storeroom's security feed and watched over a glass of red wine.

Derek looked bad enough to have actually died once.

Hester kept her voice down. "Selena couldn't take her eyes off Kane last night. She doesn't care whether you live or die!"

Derek clenched his jaw. "She chased me for eight years. She swore in front of the Moon Goddess that she would only ever choose me. How could she take Kane?"

Then he turned to go out and find me.

Hester grabbed him.

"Are you insane? If you show yourself to her now, Leon will find out everything: that you faked your death to escape the marriage, your affair with Viola, all of it! Just wait a little longer!"

Tsk. If you knew enough to be scared, maybe you should lower your voice.

But Derek was stuck on something else.

"I told you to grab any low-ranking rogue to humiliate her. Why of all wolves did you put Kane in her room?"

Hester was quiet for a moment.

"You think I wanted to? Kane asked for her by name."

Derek's fists clenched.

Hester hurried to restrain him. "You never liked Selena anyway. Why should it matter who she ends up with? What matters now is the child Viola is carrying. Once everyone accepts it as Leon's heir, the moment Leon dies..."

After a while, Derek muttered, "I understand."

Hester patted his shoulder.

"There now. I know you can't let this go. Don't worry. I have plenty of ways to make her suffer."

Being the side character was hard. Everyone wanted a turn at torturing me.

That afternoon.

Sure enough, Hester came sniveling to find me.

"I dreamed of Derek last night. He said he never sealed the mating bond with you, so his soul can't return to the Moon Goddess."

She dabbed at her eyes. "By Moonfall Bridge tradition, you should keep vigil for him at the Temple of the Moon Goddess for seven nights, then offer your blood in sacrifice. Only then can he rest."

Uh.

I opened my mouth, then thought better of it.

If I really sent him on his way, she'd be the first to object.

When I said nothing, Hester's face hardened.

"Keeping vigil for a dead mate is the duty of every member of this pack. Being the Alpha King's sister does not entitle you to trample our traditions!

"Since you won't go on your own, you can start by kneeling at—"

She never finished. A hand struck the back of her neck.

Hester's eyes rolled back, and she crumpled to the floor.

A masked woman in black stood behind her. Her name was Wren Caldwell, my personal guard, and her uniform blocked every trace of her scent.

"The Master wants you."

Tsk. No more time to play along with Hester.

I had a report to give.

That's right.

I wasn't the real Selena Windsor.

My real name was Ella Reed. I was just an ordinary she-wolf who had grown up in a rogue settlement.

When I was thirteen, the Master's people found me and trained me to be his double.

The Master had been sent away as a child to recover at a manor far from the royal city, so no one had ever seen his face.

From the day I returned to the royal court, I had been Selena Windsor in every way that mattered.

Only I knew I was merely the spy the Master had planted at Leon's side.

Nothing like a royal power struggle.

When the coronation ended, the priest did not leave.By tradition, an Alpha King's mating ceremony was more elaborate. He and his chosen mate had to seal their bond publicly at the Moon Goddess Festival, with a priest as their witness.Kane had clearly prepared for this. He had even brought the documents. The priest opened the mating contract, but he did not begin the prayer."Miss Ella, before I witness this bond, I must confirm that your mating bond with Derek Blackwood has been dissolved."There it was.I knew there was no avoiding this."Derek and I were never truly mated."The crowd below the altar stirred again.I looked at the Moon Goddess Stone and spelled it out, one word at a time."At our wedding, all we completed before the Moon Goddess's altar was a vow declaring our choice of mate."That vow created only a faint life-link. We were supposed to proceed to the bonding ceremony, but Derek ran away before it even began."So Derek and I were never bonded, and we never marked ea

On the day of the Moon Goddess Festival, I wore moon-white ceremonial robes and stepped onto the high dais built of moonstone. The Alphas of every major pack were gathered below the altar.I laid both hands on the Moon Goddess Stone at the center.A second later a hundred snowy owls burst out of the deep forest and circled the altar three times.Silver-white wings blotted out the moonlight, as if the Moon Goddess had truly come down. One after another, they knelt."By the Goddess, she has chosen Selena!"My face stayed solemn while I laughed to myself.Thank you, Viola. Those owls had been trained beautifully.Just then a royal guard covered in blood stumbled up onto the altar."Your Highness, there's trouble at the palace!"Moonfall Bridge's army has breached the royal defenses!"The altar erupted into chaos.Every Alpha rose at once.A second guard arrived right behind him."Leon and Viola are dead! The Moonfall Bridge wolves are advancing on the altar!""Moonfall Bridge?"Someone's

That night Derek came storming into my bedroom."Selena, how dare you play me?"I will never mark you. Try me."Viola's perfume still clung to his guard's uniform.I blinked innocently."I did exactly what you asked."What, you don't like it?""You vicious she-wolf!"Derek's eyes were red with fury."I was even going to give you a pup. Clearly, you don't deserve to be the mother of my child!"Every day, more nonsense."Selena."The low voice came from behind me.Kane walked out of the bathroom in nothing but black trousers, shoulders and back bare."The night's still young. Are you really going to waste it on him?"Mm.The Master was playing my candidate number one again.Derek froze. The moment Derek recognized Kane, his entire face twisted."Selena, you shameless bitch!"Let him curse me.I wasn't Selena anyway.I smiled at his misery, only for Kane to cut me a warning glance. His look plainly promised that he would deal with me later. He turned back to Derek and rolled his wrist."Y

Hester looked smug at the start of the memorial. She probably thought the guests had come out of respect for Derek as an Alpha. But when she heard everyone praising me, she slunk back to Lydia's side. "All that money, and instead of helping her mate's pack, she gives it to outsiders. What a performance."This is boring. I'm going to get some air out back."There was my opening.I gave Wren a look, and she slipped out after her.Half an hour later, Wren returned and reported quietly, "It's done."Good. My turn."The memorial rite is about to begin. Why hasn't Mrs. Blackwood returned?"Would you all help me look for her?"I headed straight for the back courtyard and shoved open the door to the third guest room.Then..."Ah!"I screamed in the most anguished voice of my life, "Mrs. Blackwood! How did you end up in bed with Viola's father, Bertram Ashcroft?"A collective gasp swept through the guests.Wasn't he mate candidate number four, officially certified by the Werewolf Council? How h

The next day I held a grand memorial service for Derek. Many of the royal city's most prominent figures attended. They stood before Derek's portrait for perhaps half a minute, then crowded around to thank my mother and me for directing relief supplies to the southern mining region after an explosion."Without you opening the warehouses and moving supplies in advance, who knows how many more wolves would have been displaced and forced to live as rogues?""Leon was still approving the paperwork when your relief convoy rolled out."I scratched my head.No need to thank me.It wasn't my money anyway. The Master was royalty too. The crown lived on pack taxes; sending aid wherever disaster struck was simply what it owed the packs.Someone muttered that Leon cried poverty every time there was a disaster, and a companion cut him off before he finished. An elderly engineer cut through the chatter and hurried toward me, beaming. "The portable water purifier you designed is finished.""They teste

The day after Viola was confined, Derek "came back from the dead."He put on a royal guard's uniform and a mask and slipped in through the back door.First, Wren kicked him into the reflecting pool. Then mate candidate number two mistook him for an intruder and landed two punches.Mate candidate number three, the priest, kindly forced a bowl of scalding soup down his throat. Finally, mate candidate number four, full of pent-up rage, gave him a whipping.Derek finally reached me battered from head to toe.I was sunbathing in the garden and lifted one lazy eyelid."You're here?"Derek stopped short."So you knew?"Without waiting for an answer, he came to his own conclusion."No wonder you have been going after Viola."You were jealous."I slowly craned my neck to stare at him.Had this man left his brain at the crash site?"Let's do this."Derek clenched his jaw as if he were about to make the ultimate sacrifice."I can give you what you've always wanted. I'll mark you right now."In re
