Chapter 5: Chapter Five: Pregnant

When Quintina Foster woke up on the emergency room bed, an hour had already passed.

"Ah, little girl, you're finally awake. How could you do such heavy work while pregnant? Are you trying to sue us?" The foreman looked at her with a mix of anger and concern.

"I... I'm pregnant?" Still not fully conscious, Quintina Foster felt as if she had been struck by lightning, completely stunned.

Pregnant? How could she be pregnant?

She was certain that since her divorce from Lambert Hobson, she hadn't been with any other man.

"Little girl, we can't keep you here. Here's your pay for today; don't come back!" The foreman hurriedly pulled out a few red banknotes and started to leave.

"I'm sorry for the trouble, I really didn't know..." Quintina Foster didn't take the money.

"Alright, alright, get some rest. I'll go now." The foreman placed the money in front of her and left without looking back.

Quintina Foster was unemployed again.

A nurse walked in, frowning slightly, but seeing her pale face, softened her expression and explained patiently, "Miss, we did a blood test and confirmed that you are pregnant. We need to do an ultrasound to determine the exact gestational age. Would you like us to schedule one for you?"

The nurse sensed something and asked tentatively, "Do you want to keep the baby? If not, it's best to terminate the pregnancy as soon as possible while the gestational age is still small..."

Quintina Foster finally came to her senses. She lowered her gaze and touched her flat belly, a strange emotion welling up inside her.

She opened her mouth, her voice hoarse, "... Please schedule the procedure. I don't want this child..."

The surgery was scheduled for an hour later. Quintina Foster sat alone in the waiting area, staring blankly at the baby promotional video on the TV screen.

Suddenly, a pair of soft little hands grabbed her legs, and a sweet, childish voice came from below, "Hug me."

Quintina Foster looked down and saw a cute, chubby toddler looking up at her with big, round eyes, making her heart melt.

"I'm Rita. My mommy is having my sister." The toddler found a comfortable spot in her arms and hugged her neck, asking, "Are you having a sister too?"

Quintina Foster paused, then leaned her forehead against the toddler's, smiling, "Does Rita like her sister?"

"Yes, I promised to share my mommy with her."

"My mommy says that my sister and I are gifts to her, her treasures, and she loves us the most."

"Do you love your treasure?"

Quintina Foster unconsciously stroked her abdomen.

She didn't like this child because it was a reminder of that nightmare. But looking at the innocent and beautiful toddler in her arms, she hesitated.

An hour later, Quintina Foster left the hospital with a pile of prenatal medications.

In the end, she couldn't bring herself to terminate the pregnancy.

Back at her place, Quintina Foster took the pills out and put them in a vitamin bottle.

She needed to keep her pregnancy a secret.

After finishing her chores, she took a taxi to the Darkwood Courtyard on the outskirts of the city.

Every year on the anniversary of Lambert Hobson's mother's death, he would go there.
