Chapter 3 All That We Used To Be

Author: A Fleeting Cloud
"Seriously? Look at you. You've hit rock bottom and still have the nerve to show your face here? Coming to a reunion like this, what else could you be after besides connections? Who are you trying to fool?"

Vincent chimed in with fake concern. "Hey, don't be so harsh. Maybe Lucas actually likes what he's doing now."

Then, he turned to me with a practiced smile. "Lucas, we're only trying to help. Out of old friendship, we even found a job for you. Don't let your pride get in the way of a good opportunity."

I honestly couldn't figure out what they were getting at, forcing money and jobs on me like charity.

If we were talking about assets, everyone in that room combined still couldn't match what I owned.

"I really don't need it," I said calmly. "But thank you."

Vincent kept that gentle smile, but his eyes were full of mockery and disdain.

Sophie clutched the check in her hand, her tone icy. "Pathetic. You're beyond help. I tried to give you a hand, but you'd rather rot where you are. Fine. Stay poor for the rest of your life."

Right after her jab, a group of our former classmates, mostly women, surged forward, eager to join in.

One heavier woman even tried to force a drink on me.

"Lucas, I've got money." She sneered. "You look so pitiful now. Drink this, and I'll send you a thousand. If you're really that desperate, maybe I'll even throw in a little extra."

Her eyes were shamelessly suggestive, and the others burst out laughing, no one stepping in to stop her.

I frowned. This reunion was nothing like what I'd imagined. If I weren't waiting for someone, I would've walked out long ago.

Just as I was about to call security, Sophie suddenly grabbed the woman's arm. Her eyes turned sharp and cold, anger flaring in her voice. "Keep your hands to yourself."

The woman yelped in pain, struggling against Sophie's grip.

Vincent grabbed Sophie's wrist. "Sophie, what are you doing?"

Her face stayed cold, her tone even colder. "Doing the right thing. This is a reunion, not your circus."

With that, she shoved the woman away. The woman didn't dare talk back to Sophie, but she shot me a venomous glare before slinking off.

I couldn't help glancing at Sophie, surprised she'd stepped in to defend me at all.

Vincent's jaw tightened, but he still forced a smile. "I heard the young heir and the CEO of Crestwell Group are having a meeting upstairs. If we're lucky, we might catch a glimpse of Aston's richest person."

The mention of that sent a ripple of excitement through the crowd.

Aston's richest person was said to be stunning and immensely wealthy. At just thirty, she already had a five-year-old child. Yet, despite her fame and success, her husband had never once appeared in public.

"Do you think we'll see her husband today?" someone asked. "They say he's a world-class surgeon. People wait months just to get an appointment with him! Even the rich and powerful have to pull strings for consultation. I swear, if I get a photo, I'm posting it on TikTok."

"Yeah, that would be exclusive content!" another squealed.

Before long, a small entourage of bodyguards entered the hall, escorting a young boy. The crowd erupted in whispers.

"Look at that entrance. He must be the son of Aston's richest woman! He's such a handsome kid."

The same woman who'd been harassing me earlier, still smarting from Sophie's grip, didn't dare make another scene, but she turned her bitterness on me instead.

"Lucas, if it weren't for Vincent, a wage slave like you would never get to breathe the same air as the son of Aston's richest person. If I were you, I'd drop to my knees right now and thank him properly. Who knows? Maybe you'll get a decent job out of it and even land someone like me, a rich woman with a six-thousand-a-month paycheck!"

I thought she was pathetic.

Ignoring her, I kept my eyes fixed calmly on the boy walking in.

Everyone rushed forward with eager, flattering smiles, phones held high as they scrambled to snap photos and record videos of the boy.

Even Vincent, usually so self-assured and aloof, put on a warm, almost obsequious grin as he stepped toward the child.

"Hey, buddy," he said with forced cheer. "Is there anything you'd like to eat? It's on me."

As he spoke, he reached out, clearly intending to pinch the boy's cheek.

But then, to everyone's shock, the boy, surrounded by bodyguards, completely ignored the adults fawning over him. Instead, he walked straight toward me.

With a bright, innocent smile, he threw himself into my arms.

"Daddy, you're finally here!" he said, his voice full of pure joy.

"I hope she can accept treatment and stop bothering me," I said. The two of them nodded apologetically, their faces heavy with regret.Soon after, Sophie was transferred to another hospital and never contacted me again. The next time I heard about her was a call from her mother."Lucas, Sophie is not going to make it. She wants to see you. Can you come?"I stayed silent for a long moment. Finally, my voice hoarse, I said, "Okay."I hung up.At that instant, I wanted to recall all the moments we had shared in our past life, but nothing came back. Time really could erase everything. When I saw Sophie again, she was unrecognizable, so thin her cheekbones jutted sharply, her face barely human. Her eyes stared blankly out the window, only lighting up the instant I stepped into the room. She glanced at her frail body and let out a self-mocking laugh. "Lucas, I must look terrible like this, right?"I didn't answer. She went on, voice trembling. "I'm sorry. I was so insecure back t

"And one more thing. Marrying you in my past life was the biggest mistake I ever made. I don't love you anymore, and I don't want to have children with you. Stop clinging to the past. That's a time I'll never go back to."When I finished, Sophie froze where she stood. Pain swept across her face, leaving her pale and rigid.I didn't care. I turned and walked straight out of the hospital room.Behind me, Sophie shouted, her voice echoing down the hall. "All women are the same! Do you really think Olivia loves you? Why would the richest woman in Aston fall for someone as ordinary as you? "Wake up! You two will never be happy together. I'm the one who's right for you!"The more she spoke, the faster I walked. She hadn't changed at all from our last life. When life treated her well, she looked down on those who struggled. When things went wrong, she envied anyone who was happier and tried to drag them down with her.People like her lived in constant regret, never satisfied, never a

Olivia pouted at me. "Babe, don't lump me in with them. I do have a conscience, you know."I smiled.Olivia had always insisted on making products with the best value. Every product, hotel, and real estate project under her name used the finest materials, yet she sold them at the lowest possible price. That was how her company grew bigger and her reputation louder with each passing year. She respected the consumers, and they'd return the favor.People like Vincent's father, on the other hand, cut corners to pad their profits, putting ordinary lives at risk. It was nothing short of monstrous. Not long after, my phone rang from an unknown number. I hesitated, then answered. It was Sophie."Did you see the news? Lucas, I was the one who reported it."I frowned, unsure why she was telling me this. "Well, thank you for doing something for the victims."Her voice sounded frail. "Lucas, I want to see you. Can we meet?"I responded firmly. "I've told you before, I've already moved

"When we agreed to break up, both in our past life and this one, it was clear that keeping our distance was the best choice, wasn't it? Besides, you regretted being with me before. You never even wanted kids with me. I can't live that kind of life again."Sophie's voice rose, trembling with anger. "I regretted it because you never supported me! You emailed those record labels and told them not to publish my songs!"I froze, staring at her in disbelief."What are you talking about? That makes no sense! I never sent any emails. Back then, I worked three jobs just to help you chase your dream. I didn't even have time to sleep, let alone pull something that petty. I wanted you to succeed more than anyone. Didn't you feel that, even once?"The moment I spoke, it was like a thunderclap to Sophie. She stood there, shocked, as if the world itself had collapsed around her.She instinctively covered her mouth, as if she couldn't accept what she was hearing, and pressed me further. "Then, wh

Vincent had been the one hosting this gathering. But the moment they found out who I truly was, their attitudes shifted. The same eyes that had fawned over Vincent now sought my attention, peppering me with concern and polite questions. And all of this happened in just a few minutes."I can't believe Lucas actually married the richest woman in town! Sophie had wanted to hand him a check. Isn't that ridiculous?""Right? She thought his ex would be miserable, and instead, he found someone even better.""Wasn't Vincent going to help him get a job as a manicurist or something? Lucas is a lead surgeon at Aston Central Hospital. He doesn't need anyone recommending jobs! Isn't that laughable?""Lucas, how come you didn't tell any of us about your wedding? We could've gotten you a big gift!"I watched my old classmates, who had barely acknowledged me before, suddenly acting all friendly and familiar. It struck me as absurd. Still, I kept my tone polite, maintaining a veneer of civility.

The usually icy boy's face softened the moment he saw me, and a pitiful, almost hurt expression spread across it. "Why didn't you come home yesterday? I missed you so much!"I scooped my son up in my arms as he ran to me, whispering reassurances. "I was working. I told you yesterday before I left. How about I take the day off tomorrow and we go out together?"My precious son, Miles Harrington, nodded eagerly. "Yes! You're the best, Daddy."The classmates watching were stunned. Every single one of them stared at me in disbelief. Before anyone could say a word, a striking, elegant woman hurried down from the conference room upstairs. "Babe, I heard from the hotel manager that you were here at your class reunion. Why didn't you tell me when you finished work? I could have driven over to get you!"The hotel manager stepped forward and introduced her to the dumbfounded crowd."This is Olivia Clarke, CEO of Crestwell Group. Ms. Clarke is also Mr. Harrington's wife. If any of you have r
