Chapter 2

作者: snow
Vito stared at me, repeating the same words over and over.

“Why are you always so heartless?”

“It took forever for Mia to finally agree to our marriage alliance, and you still insist on going against her at every turn?”

His words snapped me back to reality.

I smiled and asked in return,

“Is Mia your mother? Do you need her permission to have your own wedding?”

Vito and I had been entangled for seven years, yet we had never been able to make our relationship official.

It was all because Mia suffered from severe anxiety. The slightest hint of intimacy between Vito and me was enough to trigger an episode, let alone the thought of a wedding.

After dragging things out for so long, I had finally managed to arrange a trip out of the city to meet my father.

And Mia had ruined that too.

Vito’s face turned livid after my retort, and for a long moment, he couldn’t utter a word.

I shook my head gently.

“I’m not going to apologize to her. And this marriage arrangement ends here.”

Vito stared at me in disbelief, clearly never expecting me to say something like that.

After all, over the past seven years, I had hinted countless times that I wanted us to make our relationship official.

He knew exactly how badly I wanted to marry him.

He had just opened his mouth when his communicator began to vibrate.

The moment he saw the caller’s name, he answered immediately, his voice softening at once.

“Mia? What happened?”

I didn’t know what she said on the other end.

Vito snatched up his coat and headed for the door.

“I’ll be there right away. Wait for me.”

After ending the call, he strode toward the exit.

But just as he reached the door, he suddenly stopped, as if only then remembering that I was still standing there.

He turned back and opened his mouth.

“Mia, she—”

“I know. She’s having another episode. Go.”

For the first time, I was this understanding.

In the past, whenever something like this happened, I would always grab him and refuse to let him leave.

Clearly, my reaction this time caught him off guard.

He froze for a moment.

In the end, he said nothing.

He simply turned around and walked out.

At last, the estate fell silent.

I glanced at the flower petals scattered across the floor, too lazy to clean them up, and walked straight into the bedroom.

I opened the wardrobe, intending to pack my belongings.

That was when I realized there wasn’t a single piece of Vito’s clothing inside.

Oh.

I remembered now.

He had moved his things to Mia’s residence long ago so he could take care of her more conveniently.

To him, this estate was nothing more than a hotel.

If not for the fact that—

He really had treated me well in the early years.

Back then, he hadn’t yet secured his position as the Don.

He had promised that once he firmly established his power, he would marry me and bring me home.

I had clung to that last bit of warmth, deceiving myself year after year.

I should have woken up long ago.

Thankfully, it wasn’t too late.

At least this car accident had finally made me let go of all those foolish illusions.

Halfway through packing, I opened my terminal and replied to a work offer from Sicily.

The offer had actually been sitting in my inbox for a week.

I had mentioned it to Vito at the time, but he had used the excuse that our wedding was coming soon to pressure me into staying close and not going too far away.

Now that the marriage was off the table, I was finally free to pursue what I wanted to do.

After confirming that I would report for work in a month, I finally closed the terminal with peace of mind.

I picked up my phone, only to see Mia’s latest social media post.

It was a photo of her in profile, with Vito asleep beside her hospital bed.

Her caption was dripping with sweetness.

“Only you are willing to stay by my side forever.”

Vito’s brothers immediately flooded the comments.

“Vito cares about you the most, Mia.”

“Get well soon. Once you’re better, we’ll all go out together again!”

This wasn’t the first time Mia had posted photos and messages like this.

In the past, whenever I saw them, I would always make a scene with Vito.

But every time I did, Vito would look at me as if I were insane, accusing me of making trouble out of nothing.

Yet now, seeing another post like this, I couldn’t feel even the slightest ripple in my heart.

After all, one month from now, Vito and I would have nothing to do with each other ever again.

But I didn’t go over to acknowledge him.I pretended we were complete strangers and walked right past him.He didn’t call out to me either, probably because he still remembered what I had told him.And so, I walked ahead while he followed behind. The short half-hour journey passed quickly, and soon we arrived at the apartment building.Vito finally couldn’t hold back anymore and called my name.“Serafina.”I didn’t turn around.I pushed open the door and walked inside. From then on, I could see the figure of a man almost every day—outside my company, on a bench by the roadside, or in the narrow alley beside my apartment. But from beginning to end, the two of us never actually said a word to each other.A few days later, Vito sent me a message.“Can we meet?”For some reason, I agreed. It had only been a month since I last saw him, but Vito had lost a lot of weight. His entire body seemed shrouded in a layer of exhaustion and despair.Sitting in a bar on a street corner, he repeatedly r

After the plane landed, I took a taxi to the apartment I had rented in advance.Once everything was settled and my luggage was put away, my phone, which had been powered off for so long, automatically restarted. The moment the screen lit up, a flood of missed calls and messages appeared. They were all from Vito.Call after call kept coming through. After hesitating for a moment, I finally answered. The other end was noisy, with airport announcements and the footsteps of people passing by in the background. The airport? The next second, Vito spoke.“I found out where you landed. I’m coming to you right now. Please wait for me, okay?”“We’ll go see your family, then get engaged. From now on, you can do whatever you want. I’ll listen to you about everything, Serafina—”“Vito, have you lost your mind?”The thought of having him follow me even after I had left the city made me sick, so I coldly cut him off.Vito could hear the disgust in my voice, and there was hurt in his tone when he aske

I got to my feet and pulled open the door. Mia, trembling with rage, shoved me aside and stormed into the room. The moment she saw that Vito was no longer drunk, she froze for a second before immediately putting on that familiar, wounded expression.“Mr. Moretti, what are you doing here? I waited for you all night at home.”“Come on. Let’s go home.”As she spoke, she reached out to grab Vito’s hand, only for him to shake her off.Vito’s face was colder than I had ever seen it. His voice was low as he said,“Go home first. Serafina and I have something to talk about.”This was the first time Vito had ever rejected Mia to her face. Her eyes instantly reddened, and tears spilled down her cheeks as her voice trembled.“You’re choosing Serafina over me?”“Vito, you said you’d always take care of me and treat me well. Were all those promises lies?”“No, you wouldn’t lie to me. Did Serafina say something to you?”The next second, Mia turned toward me, hatred filling her eyes, and lunged forwa

What a lunatic.I couldn’t be bothered to exchange another word with her.I turned around, grabbed my suitcase, and walked straight out.Seeing how smug Mia looked, I figured she still had no idea that Vito and I had already broken things off for good. All the better.Let her keep basking in this victory she had staged for herself and enjoy her own little fantasy.I had booked a quiet hotel in the city center in advance, for one week.A week later, I would leave this city, which was controlled by the Moretti family, for good and head toward an entirely new life. That very night, Vito called me.I didn’t answer. After several unanswered calls, he started sending me messages instead. At first, he demanded to know why I had hit Mia.Later, he began asking where I had gone and whether I really intended to cut ties with him completely. Those two really were made for each other. They kept coming up with new variations of the same performance.I didn’t want to get dragged into their mess anym

Vito loosened his grip, and I fell onto the edge of the bed.His face went deathly pale.He stared at me in disbelief, and after a long moment, finally forced a few words through clenched teeth.“Say that again.”I lifted my head and looked at him calmly, without backing down even an inch.“I said we’re done.”I hadn’t wanted things to come to this before I left. But I had truly had enough of the endless games between Mia and Vito. They pulled something like this every few days.Anyone would have grown sick of it.Vito took a deep breath to suppress his emotions and forced out a stiff smile.“I’ll give you some time to calm down and think things through.”With that, he turned to leave. But when he reached the door, he suddenly stopped and looked back at me.“Serafina, after seven years between us, you can just cut me off with a single sentence?”“You’ve really disappointed me.”With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me sitting alone on the bed.I honestly never expected that eve

Vito’s hand froze in midair. The sleek black metal card lay silently on the table, while I made no move to take it.My gaze swept over the dishes on the table, and suddenly, I spoke.“Mia loves pistachios, doesn’t she?”Vito looked slightly surprised, clearly unable to understand why I had suddenly asked. After a moment of hesitation, he nodded.“Yeah. Mia loves them. Why?”I lifted my eyes and gave him a faint smile, each word perfectly clear.“But I’m severely allergic to pistachios, Vito.”Every Italian dish on the table had been sprinkled with crushed nuts.Even the creamy white soup was dotted with tiny pieces of pistachio. If I consumed even the smallest amount, I would break out in hives and suffer swelling in my throat. The color slowly drained from Vito’s face.He should have remembered.Back when the Moretti family had yet to secure its footing, Vito wasn’t yet the Don who held the power of life and death in his hands. We had squeezed into a tiny apartment in the old district
