Chapter 3

作者: snow
I had no intention of telling Vito that I was leaving.

After all, he had never cared about my affairs anyway.

The rich aroma of food woke me from my sleep.

When I walked out of the bedroom, Vito was busy in the open kitchen, with a custom-made silver insulated food container sitting on the counter.

The moment he saw me, he froze for a second before explaining, “Mia wants to eat something I cooked. Don’t touch it.”

I nodded without saying a word and turned into the bathroom.

Vito had never cooked for me even once.

On the few occasions he had cooked in the past, I had naively assumed the food was meant for me.

I would secretly sneak a taste and sincerely praise his cooking.

What I got in return was a deep frown and a harsh scolding.

“If you’re hungry, can’t you make something yourself? I made this for Mia!”

“She has a thing about cleanliness. If you touch something, she won’t touch it afterward. What am I supposed to do now?!”

A thing about cleanliness?

Someone that obsessed with cleanliness could still cling to another woman’s man and refuse to let go?

Looking at my pale face in the mirror, I gave a helpless tug at the corner of my lips and began washing up.

When I came out, Vito was carrying several bags and getting ready to leave.

Seeing me, he lifted his chin toward the table.

“I left some for you. Eat.”

I raised an eyebrow.

This was the first time he had ever voluntarily let me eat something he had cooked.

But when I looked over, all that remained on the plate were scraps and little bits that hadn’t fit into the insulated container.

I had absolutely no appetite.

I sat down on the sofa and prepared to order some food, but Vito remained standing by the door, staring at me.

“I spent all that time cooking. You’re not even going to take a bite?”

I shook my head without answering.

Vito took a deep breath, his voice turning cold.

“Fine. Throw your tantrum if you want. I don’t have time to baby you!”

“I’ve spoiled you rotten.”

Before he could say anything else, he slammed the door behind him and left.

The impact made the entire house tremble as the door struck the frame.

I shrugged, too lazy to bother with him.

By nightfall, I had cleared away every trace of myself from the estate.

After throwing bag after bag into the recycling bins downstairs, the weight that had been pressing against my heart for years seemed to lift with them.

Just as I was about to head back inside, I saw Vito’s car approaching from a distance.

He didn’t notice me.

After getting out, he leaned against the car door and lit a cigarette, holding his communicator as he spoke to Mia.

“Don’t worry. I won’t touch her.”

“Yeah. I’ll cook for you again tomorrow, okay?”

The sweetness in his voice made my skin crawl.

I quickly entered the house after punching in the security code.

Half an hour later, when Vito returned, his footsteps stopped in the entryway.

He looked around in surprise.

“Who let you smoke?”

I was standing on the terrace, lighting my second cigarette.

Hearing the noise, I turned around and saw his furious face.

“Didn’t I tell you that women look cheap when they smoke? Do you just ignore everything I say?”

Seeing him so worked up, I couldn’t help curling my lips into a faint smile.

“What about when Mia smokes? Why don’t you say anything then?”

He froze.

After a moment, he forced out an explanation.

“She’s sick. She’s under a lot of psychological pressure. Having a couple of cigarettes to relieve stress is perfectly normal. Why are you comparing yourself to her?”

I gave him a淡 glance and turned my face away without saying another word.

I had suffered from depression myself.

I could tell at a glance whether someone was genuinely trapped by their illness.

I had warned Vito a long time ago that there was far more to Mia’s condition than he realized.

But back then, he had flown into a rage.

He called me malicious and sick in the head, insisting that Mia would never use something like that to deceive him.

Now, I couldn’t be bothered to say another word.

Vito strode over, snatched the cigarette from between my fingers, crushed it out, and dragged me back into the living room.

But halfway there, he suddenly stopped.

He suspiciously scanned the room.

“You cleaned up the house? Why does it feel like so many things are missing?”

But I didn’t go over to acknowledge him.I pretended we were complete strangers and walked right past him.He didn’t call out to me either, probably because he still remembered what I had told him.And so, I walked ahead while he followed behind. The short half-hour journey passed quickly, and soon we arrived at the apartment building.Vito finally couldn’t hold back anymore and called my name.“Serafina.”I didn’t turn around.I pushed open the door and walked inside. From then on, I could see the figure of a man almost every day—outside my company, on a bench by the roadside, or in the narrow alley beside my apartment. But from beginning to end, the two of us never actually said a word to each other.A few days later, Vito sent me a message.“Can we meet?”For some reason, I agreed. It had only been a month since I last saw him, but Vito had lost a lot of weight. His entire body seemed shrouded in a layer of exhaustion and despair.Sitting in a bar on a street corner, he repeatedly r

After the plane landed, I took a taxi to the apartment I had rented in advance.Once everything was settled and my luggage was put away, my phone, which had been powered off for so long, automatically restarted. The moment the screen lit up, a flood of missed calls and messages appeared. They were all from Vito.Call after call kept coming through. After hesitating for a moment, I finally answered. The other end was noisy, with airport announcements and the footsteps of people passing by in the background. The airport? The next second, Vito spoke.“I found out where you landed. I’m coming to you right now. Please wait for me, okay?”“We’ll go see your family, then get engaged. From now on, you can do whatever you want. I’ll listen to you about everything, Serafina—”“Vito, have you lost your mind?”The thought of having him follow me even after I had left the city made me sick, so I coldly cut him off.Vito could hear the disgust in my voice, and there was hurt in his tone when he aske

I got to my feet and pulled open the door. Mia, trembling with rage, shoved me aside and stormed into the room. The moment she saw that Vito was no longer drunk, she froze for a second before immediately putting on that familiar, wounded expression.“Mr. Moretti, what are you doing here? I waited for you all night at home.”“Come on. Let’s go home.”As she spoke, she reached out to grab Vito’s hand, only for him to shake her off.Vito’s face was colder than I had ever seen it. His voice was low as he said,“Go home first. Serafina and I have something to talk about.”This was the first time Vito had ever rejected Mia to her face. Her eyes instantly reddened, and tears spilled down her cheeks as her voice trembled.“You’re choosing Serafina over me?”“Vito, you said you’d always take care of me and treat me well. Were all those promises lies?”“No, you wouldn’t lie to me. Did Serafina say something to you?”The next second, Mia turned toward me, hatred filling her eyes, and lunged forwa

What a lunatic.I couldn’t be bothered to exchange another word with her.I turned around, grabbed my suitcase, and walked straight out.Seeing how smug Mia looked, I figured she still had no idea that Vito and I had already broken things off for good. All the better.Let her keep basking in this victory she had staged for herself and enjoy her own little fantasy.I had booked a quiet hotel in the city center in advance, for one week.A week later, I would leave this city, which was controlled by the Moretti family, for good and head toward an entirely new life. That very night, Vito called me.I didn’t answer. After several unanswered calls, he started sending me messages instead. At first, he demanded to know why I had hit Mia.Later, he began asking where I had gone and whether I really intended to cut ties with him completely. Those two really were made for each other. They kept coming up with new variations of the same performance.I didn’t want to get dragged into their mess anym

Vito loosened his grip, and I fell onto the edge of the bed.His face went deathly pale.He stared at me in disbelief, and after a long moment, finally forced a few words through clenched teeth.“Say that again.”I lifted my head and looked at him calmly, without backing down even an inch.“I said we’re done.”I hadn’t wanted things to come to this before I left. But I had truly had enough of the endless games between Mia and Vito. They pulled something like this every few days.Anyone would have grown sick of it.Vito took a deep breath to suppress his emotions and forced out a stiff smile.“I’ll give you some time to calm down and think things through.”With that, he turned to leave. But when he reached the door, he suddenly stopped and looked back at me.“Serafina, after seven years between us, you can just cut me off with a single sentence?”“You’ve really disappointed me.”With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me sitting alone on the bed.I honestly never expected that eve

Vito’s hand froze in midair. The sleek black metal card lay silently on the table, while I made no move to take it.My gaze swept over the dishes on the table, and suddenly, I spoke.“Mia loves pistachios, doesn’t she?”Vito looked slightly surprised, clearly unable to understand why I had suddenly asked. After a moment of hesitation, he nodded.“Yeah. Mia loves them. Why?”I lifted my eyes and gave him a faint smile, each word perfectly clear.“But I’m severely allergic to pistachios, Vito.”Every Italian dish on the table had been sprinkled with crushed nuts.Even the creamy white soup was dotted with tiny pieces of pistachio. If I consumed even the smallest amount, I would break out in hives and suffer swelling in my throat. The color slowly drained from Vito’s face.He should have remembered.Back when the Moretti family had yet to secure its footing, Vito wasn’t yet the Don who held the power of life and death in his hands. We had squeezed into a tiny apartment in the old district
