Chapter 3

Autor: Liora Z
I bent down and picked up the wet garment bag. I unzipped it. Inside was a red dress.

It wasn't a dress. It was a cheap maid's costume. The kind you find in a sex shop. The neckline plunged to her navel and the skirt was a postage stamp. The polyester felt like sandpaper against my frozen skin.

Tommy grinned, his voice oozing superiority. "Boss says this is your last chance. Put this on, go to Gia’s send-off party for Paris Fashion Week tonight, and serve drinks. You do a good job, maybe your bank accounts get unfrozen tomorrow. He'll even save you a seat at the wedding, so you can watch from the audience."

He paused, a vicious glint in his eye. "It's a huge honor, Miss Oriana. Other girls would kill for this opportunity."

The blizzard whipped at my face, stinging like a thousand tiny knives. My body was shaking from the cold, but my back was ramrod straight.

My voice was a blade against the wind, sharp and clear. "You tell Maximo to go to hell."

Tommy's face darkened. "You ungrateful bitch!"

He waved his hand. Two massive bodyguards jumped out of the car. "You want to do this the hard way? Fine."

They grabbed my arms, twisting them behind my back.

"Let me go!"

I struggled, but after two hours in the snow, I was too weak.

Tommy shoved the muddy maid outfit into my arms. "Maximo's orders. You're wearing this one way or another."

He shoved me violently toward the car. "Get in!"

I was forced into the back seat. The door slammed shut like the lid of a coffin.

The Escalade sped through the blizzard. The driver had the AC blasting, turning the car into an icebox. I was soaked to the bone, my teeth chattering so hard my jaw ached. My lips were purple.

Tommy sat in the passenger seat, glancing back at me, his face smug. "Why make it so hard, Miss Oriana? A woman just has to be a little obedient in bed, and she can have anything. You go against the boss, and you're the only one who suffers."

I closed my eyes, refusing to engage with this scum.

One thought echoed in my mind: Maximo, you will pay for tonight.

Half an hour later, the car stopped behind a luxury casino hotel. The door was ripped open.

"Get out!"

I was shoved out of the car, nearly falling. Through the glass of the back entrance, I could see the glittering party inside.

In the main hall, Maximo was with Gia, laughing with the city's elite. Gia was wearing a priceless Chanel gown, and my "Heart of Sicily" ring sparkled on her hand under the lights. She clung to Maximo's arm, blooming like a flower. Maximo was in a custom Armani suit, handsome and charming.

They looked so perfect together. So happy. Like I never existed.

Maximo saw me being dragged in. He excused himself and strode toward me. He looked at the muddy maid outfit in my hands and frowned.

"Why do you look like such a mess?" He took off his own cashmere coat, trying to drape it over my shoulders, his voice full of that same fake concern. "Oriana, you're just too stubborn. If you'd just listen, I'd never let you suffer like this."

Nausea rose in my throat. I turned away from his touch. "Don't touch me."

Maximo's face went dark. He glanced around to make sure no one was watching, then cornered me.

"That's enough, Oriana." He grabbed my chin, squeezing so hard I could barely breathe. "Go change. Now. Be Gia's waitress. This is your last chance."

I struggled, but his grip was a vise. "I won't serve anyone. Especially not his whore."

A dangerous light flashed in Maximo's eyes. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled something out.

My heart stopped.

It was a gold cross necklace. Engraved with my family's crest. The only thing my mother ever gave me.

"Recognize this?" He dangled it in front of my face, like bait for a caged animal. "Your mother gave it to you. Right before she died. You never took it off. Not until I told you it was tacky."

He smirked, his fingers tracing the cross.

"Maximo! Give it back!" I lunged for it.

He held it high, his eyes cold.

"Be the waitress, and you get it back. Otherwise, I melt it down. Right now."

He waited there for three days and three nights, without food or water. He didn't know what he was doing. He only knew he had to see her one more time. Even just once. Even if it meant kneeling and licking the dirt from her shoes. Finally, on the evening of the fourth day, a black Rolls-Royce Phantom, escorted by several Cadillacs, drove slowly out of the estate.Maximo saw his chance. With a final burst of strength, he threw himself in front of the car.THUD.He landed hard on his knees on the asphalt. The sickening sound of bone on pavement. Oriana, holding her gown, walked slowly to the edge of the altar steps."Maximo," she said, her red lips barely moving. "I don't dig through the trash for things I've already thrown away."Raphael stepped forward and pulled her into his arms. His strong, elegant fingers crushed the whiskey glass he was holding. The sound of shattering glass was the sound of Maximo's last hope dying."Throw him in a sewer in the Chicago River," Raphael said calmly, sealing Maximo's fate. "And put out a kill order on him to the entire underworld. Anyone who gives him so much as a scrap of bread is an enemy of the Falcone family."As Maximo was dragged out by his hair, his screams echoing through the church, the doors began to close. In the final second before they shut, his bloodshot eyes saw Raphael lean down and possessively kiss Oriana's lips. Then, Maximo's world went dark.---Maximo's life wasn't a nightmare. It was worse. A nightmare ends when you wake up. This was just his life now. Raphael's

The entire street was blocked off, a line of luxury cars as far as the eye could see. Raphael's men stood guard every few feet, forming an impenetrable wall around the cathedral.Maximo straightened his back, trying to muster the old authority of a Gallo Don, and strode toward the entrance."Get out of my way! I'm here to see Oriana!" he yelled at the guards. The two men looked at him, their faces blank. One of them didn't even bother to look down at him. "No invite, you die. Simple as that."Maximo cried out and collapsed onto the steps. The immense wall of class and power was real. Here, Maximo Gallo was nothing. He knelt on the cold steps, bitter tears of humiliation mixing with the melting snow in his mouth. He struggled, screaming at the doors."Let me in! Oriana is my woman!""You dogs, tell Raphael to get his ass out here!"The family bosses who used to flatter him now gave him a wide berth, casting looks of scorn and pity."Isn't that Maximo? What happened to him?""Some small

I was wrong, I was so wrong! I'll get rid of Gia, I'll do anything you want! Please, Oriana! I can't go to prison!" Tears and snot streamed down his face.Silence on the other end. Then, a cold laugh."You don't get angry when a stray dog bites you," she said, her voice hollow. "You just get angry at yourself for trusting it.""Oriana, I love you! I've always loved you!" Maximo screamed hysterically."Love?" She chuckled softly. "You only loved the power and money I gave you. And now, you'll be hunted to death by the Commission and your enemies for the crime of betrayal.""No! Oriana, please don't do this!"Click. The line went dead.Maximo stared at the phone, his world collapsing into utter despair.---Three days later, Maximo was temporarily bailed out through what was left of his family's connections.

"What do you mean, frozen?" Maximo's voice shook.Giuseppe's face was white, sweat dripping from his chin. "The family's biggest source of underground capital was cut off at 3 a.m. The half-a-billion-dollar line of credit, gone. The Commission is asking why our funding has disappeared. All our legitimate businesses have been seized. The port is on lockdown. Even the longshoremen don't know who to take orders from anymore."Maximo stared at the screen. One after another, every account showed a balance of zero. The numbers that had been his pride and joy had vanished."This is impossible!" he roared. "That's my money! Those are my businesses!""Don Maximo..." Giuseppe trembled. "I've checked everything. All these capital sources, all these businesses... they all trace back to one ultimate owner.""Who?" Maximo's eyes were bloodshot. "Tell me who dares to touch my money!"Giuseppe opened a file. A complex web of shell corporations and financial flows appeared on the screen. But at the end
