The air froze.

Maximo turned slowly, his eyes narrowing slightly behind his gold-rimmed glasses, examining her with cold indifference.

"What did you just say?"His voice carried an oppressive weight.

The crystal chandelier overhead was blinding. I looked at the face that had once captivated me, and my stomach turned.

“I said, the wedding is off.” My voice was flat. Not a single tremor.

“Pfft—”

Gia giggled, a sound like poison poured into honey.

“Oriana, don't be so petty.”

she purred, pressing against Maximo, deliberately twisting the massive diamond ring on her finger.

“Maximo only feels sorry that I had no impressive jewelry to show off at the pre-show dinner.”

“This ring can realize its greatest commercial value when worn on my hand.”

“ You’re usually so sensible, so why are you being so unreasonable at such a critical moment?”

She called him "Maximo." So naturally.

I’d never heard a woman use a word like that. Not once in five years.

"Take off the ring," I told her, my voice cold.

Gia feigned terror, tugged atMaximo's hem. "Maximo, I'm scared..."

Maximo pulled her behind him, his brow furrowed. "That's enough, Oriana!" He waved a dismissive hand. "You're being ridiculous."

He walked toward me, every step a threat.

"Gia is walking in a major show in Paris. Those connections are vital to the family's future."

“I gave her the ring for the sake of our future home.”

He stopped right in front of me, looking down at me. "And you? An art gallery owner. Who are you trying to impress with a piece like this? Your broke artist friends?"

Every word was a knife in my heart.

Five years.

Five years of hiding my true identity, paving his way from the shadows. And it meant nothing to him.

"Maximo, This is the wedding ring I’ve been waiting for six months."

“You just give it away like that? Did you even ask for my opinion?”

I hold my breath and clench my fists tightly.

Maximo let out a cold laugh.

"Your opinion?"

He closed in on me, his breath enveloping me. "This five-million-dollar ring? I paid for it."

“That lakeside apartment you live in, the Maserati you drive, even the rent for your pathetic little gallery?Everything you have is from me,."

“You’re talking to me about your opinion now?”

He stretched out his finger and poked my shoulder hard.

"Oriana,so you better learn some goddamn gratitude and stop telling me what to do."

I stared at the conceited man in front of me, and suddenly he felt so unfamiliar.

This was the man I had loved for five years?

He didn't see anything wrong with giving my wedding ring to his mistress.

In his eyes, I was just another pretty object he owned.

I was done talking. I turned to walk out.

"Oriana, don't push your luck!"

Maximo grabbed my wrist. So tight I almost cried out.

"Now, you're going to go to the vault, pick another piece of jewelry, and the wedding ceremony will proceed as planned." His voice was a low, dangerous whisper in my ear.

"As long as you behave yourself, I'll buy you out every jewelry store on Rodeo Drive to make it up to you. But if you dare walk out that door..." He paused, his voice turning colder.

"I promise you, no one in this city will sell you a goddamn thing. You'll find out that without me, you don't even have a roof over your head."

Gritting my teeth against the sharp pain in my wrist, I lifted my head and stared straight into his eyes.

Five years of devotion, for this?

"Maximo,you make me sick."

I ripped my arm from his grasp.

I walked to the door without looking back.

"Oriana, I'm warning you! Don't push me!"

I didn't stop. I squared my shoulders, pushed open the workshop door, and walked out. Behind me, I heard Maximo's arrogant, cold laughter.

He waited there for three days and three nights, without food or water. He didn't know what he was doing. He only knew he had to see her one more time. Even just once. Even if it meant kneeling and licking the dirt from her shoes. Finally, on the evening of the fourth day, a black Rolls-Royce Phantom, escorted by several Cadillacs, drove slowly out of the estate.Maximo saw his chance. With a final burst of strength, he threw himself in front of the car.THUD.He landed hard on his knees on the asphalt. The sickening sound of bone on pavement. He kneeled in the filthy slush and started banging his head on the ground.Thump. Thump. Thump. His forehead split open, blood mixing with the slush, staining the road red."Oriana! Please, just see me one more time!""I know I was wrong! I really know!""I'm not asking you to forgive me, just let me live! I'm dying!"He was lower than dirt.Inside the car, the privacy window lowered a few inches. It was warm inside. Oriana, now visibly pregna

Oriana, holding her gown, walked slowly to the edge of the altar steps."Maximo," she said, her red lips barely moving. "I don't dig through the trash for things I've already thrown away."Raphael stepped forward and pulled her into his arms. His strong, elegant fingers crushed the whiskey glass he was holding. The sound of shattering glass was the sound of Maximo's last hope dying."Throw him in a sewer in the Chicago River," Raphael said calmly, sealing Maximo's fate. "And put out a kill order on him to the entire underworld. Anyone who gives him so much as a scrap of bread is an enemy of the Falcone family."As Maximo was dragged out by his hair, his screams echoing through the church, the doors began to close. In the final second before they shut, his bloodshot eyes saw Raphael lean down and possessively kiss Oriana's lips. Then, Maximo's world went dark.---Maximo's life wasn't a nightmare. It was worse. A nightmare ends when you wake up. This was just his life now. Raphael's

The entire street was blocked off, a line of luxury cars as far as the eye could see. Raphael's men stood guard every few feet, forming an impenetrable wall around the cathedral.Maximo straightened his back, trying to muster the old authority of a Gallo Don, and strode toward the entrance."Get out of my way! I'm here to see Oriana!" he yelled at the guards. The two men looked at him, their faces blank. One of them didn't even bother to look down at him. "No invite, you die. Simple as that."Maximo cried out and collapsed onto the steps. The immense wall of class and power was real. Here, Maximo Gallo was nothing. He knelt on the cold steps, bitter tears of humiliation mixing with the melting snow in his mouth. He struggled, screaming at the doors."Let me in! Oriana is my woman!""You dogs, tell Raphael to get his ass out here!"The family bosses who used to flatter him now gave him a wide berth, casting looks of scorn and pity."Isn't that Maximo? What happened to him?""Some small

Ring... ring... ring...She picked up on the third ring."Maximo." Oriana's voice was terrifyingly calm. Devoid of all emotion."Oriana!" Maximo burst into tears. "Please, save me! I was wrong, I was so wrong! I'll get rid of Gia, I'll do anything you want! Please, Oriana! I can't go to prison!" Tears and snot streamed down his face.Silence on the other end. Then, a cold laugh."You don't get angry when a stray dog bites you," she said, her voice hollow. "You just get angry at yourself for trusting it.""Oriana, I love you! I've always loved you!" Maximo screamed hysterically."Love?" She chuckled softly. "You only loved the power and money I gave you. And now, you'll be hunted to death by the Commission and your enemies for the crime of betrayal.""No! Oriana, please don't do this!"Click. The line went dead.Maximo stared at the phone, his world collapsing into utter despair.---Three days later, Maximo was temporarily bailed out through what was left of his family's connections.

"What do you mean, frozen?" Maximo's voice shook.Giuseppe's face was white, sweat dripping from his chin. "The family's biggest source of underground capital was cut off at 3 a.m. The half-a-billion-dollar line of credit, gone. The Commission is asking why our funding has disappeared. All our legitimate businesses have been seized. The port is on lockdown. Even the longshoremen don't know who to take orders from anymore."Maximo stared at the screen. One after another, every account showed a balance of zero. The numbers that had been his pride and joy had vanished."This is impossible!" he roared. "That's my money! Those are my businesses!""Don Maximo..." Giuseppe trembled. "I've checked everything. All these capital sources, all these businesses... they all trace back to one ultimate owner.""Who?" Maximo's eyes were bloodshot. "Tell me who dares to touch my money!"Giuseppe opened a file. A complex web of shell corporations and financial flows appeared on the screen. But at the end

It was the most secure location in Chicago.I sat on an Italian leather sofa, changed into warm, dry clothes. My mother's necklace was back around my neck. The doctor had just finished tending to my knee and quietly excused himself.Raphael walked over with a glass of bourbon and pressed it into my hand.
