Chapter 6 Milia's trouble

Instead, I pull Kent's hand as I try to pass by, but Carey blocks my way.

Carey's eyes glaze over, and he quickly clutches my wrist with a force so heavy that it seems to crush my bones. He asks, 'Miriam, when did you get so close to this guy? Shouldn't you give me an explanation?'

I do not respond. Before I can say anything, another big hand beside me directly grabs Carey's hand away from me. A cool and calm male voice penetrates a hint of oppression, 'Be polite to my wife.'

Kerry's pupils suddenly shrunk when the words fell. He didn't react for a moment.

My wrists were pinched red, and a big hand swept over my shoulders, shielding me at my side to form a protective circle. Then, I was quickly led away, leaving Kerry standing in the same place in dismay.

The low-profile Buick pulled away from the Harris family's main residence shortly after.

Inside the car, I breathed a sigh of relief. The man reminded me, 'Since you said you have nothing to do with Carey anymore, I hope you'll keep your word.'

He added, 'A married woman who gets entangled with another man will be burned to death, Ms. Miriam should know this.'

The speaker's words seemed directed at me. I turned my head and smiled wryly. 'Isn't it a double standard for a married man to become involved with another woman?' 'Isn't it a double standard for a married man to become involved with another woman?' I asked. 'Isn't it a double standard for a married man to become involved with another woman?'

'Isn't it a double standard for a married man to become involved with another woman?' 'I would feel self-conscious doing it alone.'

Kent raised an eyebrow and showed interest, 'We can see who's going to be the traitor who gets burned.'

Since Kent was my shelter, I had to keep my job.

As I arrived at my workstation and put my things away, Neris greeted me excitedly. She said, 'Miriam, you've finally come back to my embrace! I have good news for you!'

I raised my eyebrows in curiosity and asked, 'What?'

Nerys quickly came to my side and whispered in a restrained tone of excitement, 'The Kerry and Mary story hasn't been deleted, and the heat is back on. That pair of scumbags are once again the center of attention!'

I was taken aback by the words and my eyes showed confusion. Yesterday, didn't you say that the Harris family offered our newspaper a high price to delete that story?

I believed that the deletion of the report was a done deal, but I didn't expect a change of heart.

Nalis confirmed, 'Yes, but ultimately, our leaders rejected their offer, stating that as a media outlet, we have an obligation to expose immoral behavior.'

After a pause, Neris smiled mysteriously and whispered in my ear, 'Someone offered a higher price to prevent us from deleting the report.'

I was surprised and asked, 'Who?' Neris

replied, 'I'm not sure, but our editor-in-chief told me that the slam is good this time and the bonus this month will be substantial.' She added, 'As soon as I get my hands on it, I'll transfer it to you.'

My good sister provided me with the fierce news this time. The report's protagonists were my boyfriend and cousin, which made me feel uneasy.

I shook my head and said, 'Why transfer it to me? You deserve it, take it easy.'

I put the bag on my work desk and said, 'I'll go find the editor-in-chief to revoke my resignation first. We'll talk later.'

I hope I can keep this job.

I arrived at the editor-in-chief's office and knocked on the door.

The editor-in-chief informed me that the resignation had already been submitted, so I left with a stiff upper lip.

When I was planning to resign, the editor-in-chief Roches kindly retained me. I thought I had a good chance of staying if my resignation had not yet been submitted to the top. However, now that it has been submitted to the editor-in-chief, I can only speak to her in person.

After organizing my emotions, I smoothly entered Hanniella's office and met her.

Hannila, stylishly dressed, closed the file beside her desk and looked at me.

I greeted her with a smile and said, 'Hello, Editor-in-Chief.'

Hannila looked surprised and gestured towards the chair in front of her, 'Please, have a seat.'

I nodded and sat down across from her. I got right to the point and asked, 'Editor-in-Chief, can I withdraw the resignation I submitted two days ago? If it's possible, I'd like to continue working for Morty's Magazine.'

Hanila raised her eyebrows and asked, 'Is this sudden reversal because of the end of your marriage with your boyfriend?'

I felt embarrassed and admitted, 'Yes, work is more reliable than a man.' Please give me another chance, Chief Editor.

I won't give up my career for anyone in the future.'

Hanila's lips curled into a gloating smile as she pretended to forgive me. 'I'll let you stay again for your excellent work performance earlier.'

I was about to thank her for her kind words when she paused and said, 'But this time, many of my colleagues at the newspaper have heard about your resignation. Now that they see you coming back to work, most of them will feel that our newspaper's system has become arbitrary. They will think that you can come and go as you please, and that this is not a good influence on us as a large newspaper.' My face fell.

The Chief Editor gave me a work assignment. If I complete it, I can stay as a matter of course, so people won't have a problem with it. A few moments later, I left the office.

I listened attentively and nodded my head.

Nalis was waiting for me in the corridor and asked, "How was it?

 Did the talk go well?"

I nodded, then shook my head and sighed. "It didn't go well," I said. "The editor-in-chief gave me a task to complete before I can stay on. "The editor-in-chief gave me a task to complete before I can stay on.

"The editor-in-chief gave me a task to complete before I can stay on.  Nerys asked if I needed help.

She wants me to write a story about the president of Jonah Group, and I only have three days."

The Jonah Group has experienced a sudden rise in the past two years, quickly becoming a major player in the business world. Its development momentum has even surpassed that of the Harris Group, which is owned by the wealthy Harris family. Despite being known as the top group in the business world, little is known about the president of the Jonah Group.

This lack of information makes the task at hand quite challenging.

Nerys took a deep breath upon hearing this.

'The president of Jonah Group?' she exclaimed. 'There are only a handful of people in the city who know his personal information and have met him in person. How can you possibly complete this report in just three days? I think she's setting you up for failure.'
