Chapter 1

Heather Whitfield quickly came back to her senses and crouched down to soothe our daughter. “Nicole, sweetheart, this is your daddy.”

Nicole Lowe furrowed her little brows and looked at me. “But Daddy isn’t—”

Before she could finish, Heather quickly covered her mouth and said, “It’s been too long since she last saw you. She’s just shy around you.”

She looked up at me. There was a note of reproach in her voice. “You know you’ve barely been home in three years. Little kids don’t have the best memories. It’s perfectly normal.”

I wanted to tell her it was not that I did not want to come home.

The first year, I was assigned to a project under strict lockdown. I had already bought my plane ticket for the New Year when she told me Nicole had just recovered from the flu and she was worried I might bring the virus home.

The second year, I arranged time off, but she said her mother was staying with her and the house was a mess. There was no point in making the trip.

The third year, I told her I wanted to take leave to attend one of Nicole’s preschool events. She said our daughter was already used to life without me and would only cry if I suddenly showed up.

Every week, I stayed up late waiting for our video calls.

She would either tell me Nicole was already asleep or that she was exhausted from her extracurricular classes.

Sometimes, my daughter’s face would flash across the screen. The moment I called her name, Heather would blame a bad connection and hurriedly hang up.

I thought raising a child alone was hard enough for her. Hence, I sent more money and more gifts. I never complained.

I held out the bags in my hands. “Nicole, I bought these for you—a dress and a puzzle. Don’t you love this princess character?”

Nicole did not take them. Instead, she regarded me with even greater suspicion. “How do you know that, mister?”

My hand froze in midair.

Heather took the bags from me and managed a strained smile. “She’s still little. She doesn’t know any better.”

I did not push her. As I stepped inside to change my shoes, I noticed a pair of gray men’s slippers on the second shelf of the shoe cabinet. They were a size ten, and they were not mine.

My own slippers were on the bottom shelf, their uppers crushed out of shape and a thin layer of dust covered them.

Heather followed my gaze and immediately explained, “My younger brother stayed over last time and left them here.”

I nodded and said nothing.

In the bathroom, I spotted a black electric razor on the counter. It looked brand-new.

I did not use that brand.

Heather leaned against the doorway, her voice suddenly tense. “That belongs to my father. He came over a while back to help me fix a leaky pipe.”

I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My face was darkened by the sun, dark circles shadowed my eyes, and years of working on construction sites had left my skin rough and weathered.

I looked like an outsider who had wandered by mistake into someone else’s carefully polished life.

The master bedroom door stood slightly ajar. On the nightstand lay a black fast-charging cable. The worn section near the plug had been wrapped in blue electrical tape.

Inside the wardrobe, most of the space that used to hold my clothes was empty. Only a few old shirts remained, shoved into the farthest corner.

Heather came up behind me and closed the wardrobe door. “I tidied things up. I was worried your clothes would get moldy, so I put them in vacuum-sealed bags for now.”

She had an explanation for everything. Every time, I told myself I was probably overthinking things.

After all, we had been married for seven years, and Nicole was five. I had not been able to come home for so long, and now, I was assuming the worst about my own family.

That evening, dinner was a full spread that included a stew. Everything on the table was something Nicole loved.

The moment I sat down, she picked up her plate and scooted closer to Heather. “Mommy, is he going to live with us forever?”

The table fell silent for a moment.

I looked at Heather, who merely stroked Nicole’s head and murmured, “He… just got back. He’ll only be staying for a few days.”

I put down my cutlery. “I’m her father.”

Heather’s expression shifted. “Desmond, don’t scare her. She needs time to adjust.”

After dinner, I wheeled my suitcase toward the master bedroom.

Heather stepped in front of the door. “Why don’t you stay at a hotel for a couple of days?”

The divorce proceedings moved much faster than Heather had expected. The evidence was simply too thorough to dispute. At first, she still tried to claim the house, the car, and a hefty amount in child support.Gareth asked her just one question, “Are you sure you want all of this evidence submitted to court and examined in open proceedings?”She fell silent. In the end, we reached a final settlement. The marriage was dissolved.Nicole would live primarily with me, while Heather would have visitation rights according to the agreed schedule.I would retain control of the apartment. The increase in the apartment’s value attributable to mortgage payments made during the marriage would be calculated and settled in accordance with the law, but she would have to move out by a specified deadline. The car was registered in my name and was returned to me that same day.As for the substantial gifts and investment funds she had transferred to Wesley without my consent, I would pursue thei

Heather did not last much longer. The supplementary card had been canceled, Wesley was avoiding her, the credit card bills were piling up, and even her mother could not afford to bail her out.She started waiting for me outside my office building. On the first day, she stood in the wind for two hours wearing a thin dress. The receptionist called me. “Mr. Lowe, there’s Ms. Whitfield here claiming to be your wife.”I replied, “Have security handle it according to visitor policy.”The following day, she came with Eleanor and several relatives.Eleanor stood in the lobby and shouted, “Everyone, come take a look! This man gets a little money and suddenly he doesn’t want his wife or child anymore!”At first, the relatives joined in.“What married couple stays mad at each other forever?”“The child is still so young. How can you be so heartless?”When I came downstairs, Gareth was with me. He handed Eleanor a condensed list of the evidence.“Would you like me to play the recording

After the meeting, Wesley was the first to make a run for it. Heather chased him down to the entrance of the law firm.Gareth and I watched from a second-floor window as she grabbed Wesley by the arm.“Why did you say that back there? Didn’t you promise you’d marry me?”Wesley shook her off. “Stop acting crazy.”“Crazy?” Heather’s voice rose so sharply that passersby turned to look. “You’ve been living off me all these years, and Nicole calls you Daddy! Now you’re calling me crazy?!”Wesley let out a cold laugh. “Your money? Wasn’t it all your husband’s money you were spending?”Heather was startled for a moment. He continued, “Heather, you didn’t seriously think I was going to marry you, did you? You’re thirty, you have a kid, you don’t have a job, and you’ve been cheating on your husband. Back when your husband was sending you money every month and you had a house and a car, I didn’t mind having a little fun with you. But now he’s cut you off, and he’s coming after the money,

The day I finally confronted them, we met in the conference room at Gareth’s law firm.Heather arrived late. She wore a white dress, her eyes red and swollen as though she had prepared herself to cry in front of everyone. My mother-in-law, Eleanor Frost, followed close behind. The moment she stepped through the door, she pointed at me and started yelling.“Desmond, do you have a conscience at all? My daughter gave you a child and waited for you for three whole years, and now you’ve got a little money and think you can just divorce her?”I did not get up. Gareth gestured for her to sit down.Eleanor slapped the table. “You're telling me to sit down? We’re settling this today, once and for all! The house belongs to Heather and Nicole. They need somewhere to live, and the child belongs with her mother. You’re a grown man. Why can’t you just buy another house?”Heather lowered her head and began to sob. “Desmond, I know you’re angry, but Nicole is still so young. She can’t grow up wi

The next day, I moved out of the apartment. Heather assumed I had finally given in and sent me a message.[Maybe we should both take a few days to cool off. Just stop making a scene about money.]I did not reply. Instead, I checked into a hotel near my office and spread all the evidence across the table. When Gareth arrived, he had a laptop with him. “Let’s get started.”I exported three years’ worth of bank transfers. 3,000 dollars every month, plus an extra 1,000 to 3,000 dollars on holidays. The mortgage was another 1,500 dollars a month, automatically deducted from my primary account. The car loan had long been paid off. The car was registered in my name, yet Heather had been the one driving it all along.Gareth looked through the records and let out a disbelieving click of his tongue. “You haven't been supporting a family. You’ve been funding a small-scale criminal enterprise.”I said nothing. …Over the next few days, I visited the property management office. The mana

There was complete silence on the other end of the line.A few seconds later, Heather shrieked, “Desmond! You’re going to regret this!”I ended the call. Barely thirty seconds later, her name flashed across my screen again. I let it ring out, one call after another, until the messages began pouring in.[Are you really going to stand by and watch Nicole and me suffer until we have nothing left?][Are you even a man?][What kind of husband does this to his wife?]I turned off my screen. Heather called from noon until evening, but I did not answer a single call. She started sending me pictures of Nicole eating her meals, practicing dance, and falling asleep with her stuffed animal in her arms. Finally, she sent a voice message. In the background, I could hear Heather trying to stifle her sobs.Nicole spoke carefully, almost timidly. “Mr. Lowe, can you please not be mad at Mommy? Mommy said if you send us money, I can keep going to dance class.”After listening to it, I turned m
