Chapter 3

Autor: Perfect Timing
Heather shot to her feet. “Nicole!”

The smile on Wesley’s face froze for half a second. Then he looked up, saw me, and quickly regained his composure. “You must be Desmond. Heather talks about you all the time.”

Desmond.

He knew exactly who I was. He knew this home had a husband, a father. Yet here he stood in my doorway, with my daughter clinging to him and calling him 'daddy'.

What was even more ridiculous was that he did not ask where the slippers were after coming inside. He bent down, took the pair of gray men’s slippers from the second shelf of the shoe cabinet, and slipped them on with practiced ease.

It was as though he had always had a place in this home.

I pulled out my phone and started recording. Heather’s expression darkened.

“Desmond, what are you doing?”

I did not answer.

Wesley set the breakfast on the right side of the dining table, then took a cup from the cabinet and poured Nicole some milk. The cup was covered in cartoon stickers. It looked as though he had used it countless times.

He smiled at me and explained, “Desmond, don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not easy for Heather to raise a child on her own. I’m just a helpful guy. If I can lend a hand, I will.”

I stared at him. “And helping her means sleeping over at my house?”

Wesley’s expression shifted slightly. Heather immediately blew up.

“Can you stop making everything sound so ugly? You’re seriously taking a child’s words at face value? Wes just comes by to help out. It was only because it got so late that he…”

She suddenly stopped. She probably realized she could not even make that excuse sound convincing.

I asked, “Wes?”

Wesley chuckled, but there was a taunting glint in his eyes.

“That’s what Heather usually calls me. Desmond, while you’ve been away all these years, someone had to lend her a hand. Don’t worry. I love Nicole like she’s my own daughter.”

The anger simmering in my chest finally erupted. “My daughter needs you to love her like she’s your own?”

Frightened, Nicole flinched and snuggled closer to Wesley. “Daddy, Mr. Lowe is so scary.”

Those words hurt more than Wesley’s taunts ever could.

Heather scooped Nicole into her arms, her eyes filled with accusation.

“Desmond, look what you’ve done to her!”

“I just came home, and she calls me Mr. Lowe. An outsider walks through the door, and she calls him daddy. How exactly am I supposed to stay calm?”

Heather let out a cold laugh. “Now you remember you’re a father? What have you done these past three years besides sending money?”

The room fell silent. I looked at her and suddenly let out a small laugh.

So all the money I had worked myself to the bone earning, through wind and rain for three years, had been reduced to one thing in her eyes. All I ever did was send money.

I put my phone away. “Fine.”

Heather frowned. “What do you mean, fine?”

“If you really think sending money is the only thing I’ve done…”

I glanced at her, then turned to Wesley. “Then starting this month, I won’t be sending any more.”

Heather was startled for a moment.

The smile on Wesley’s face faded just as quickly. Heather assumed I was only making empty threats in the heat of the moment.

After dropping Nicole off at preschool, she came home and immediately confronted me.

“Desmond, don’t you dare use money to threaten me!”

I did not argue with her again. I went to the bank and canceled the monthly automatic transfer I had set up.

While I was at it, I also suspended some of the spending privileges on the supplementary credit card under her name.

That evening, Heather did not come home for dinner. She messaged me, saying she was taking Nicole to dance class.

I sat alone in the living room and opened the tablet she left on without logging out.

A set of photos popped up in the cloud-synced album.

It was Nicole’s birthday. Written across the cake were the words: [Happy Birthday, Daddy!]

The background was our living room. Wesley wore a birthday hat. Heather stood beside him, while Nicole wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek.

The photos were dated June of last year. That was the day I came down with a high fever at the project site in the northwest.

It turned out Nicole had not been asleep after all.

I barely slept that night.

The next morning, I collected several strands of Nicole’s hair with the roots still attached from her hairbrush.

When I dropped them off at the testing center, the staff told me to wait for a notification.

Three days later, a text message arrived: [Mr. Lowe, your submitted paternity test results are ready. Please bring your identification to collect the report.]

The divorce proceedings moved much faster than Heather had expected. The evidence was simply too thorough to dispute. At first, she still tried to claim the house, the car, and a hefty amount in child support.Gareth asked her just one question, “Are you sure you want all of this evidence submitted to court and examined in open proceedings?”She fell silent. In the end, we reached a final settlement. The marriage was dissolved.Nicole would live primarily with me, while Heather would have visitation rights according to the agreed schedule.I would retain control of the apartment. The increase in the apartment’s value attributable to mortgage payments made during the marriage would be calculated and settled in accordance with the law, but she would have to move out by a specified deadline. The car was registered in my name and was returned to me that same day.As for the substantial gifts and investment funds she had transferred to Wesley without my consent, I would pursue thei

Heather did not last much longer. The supplementary card had been canceled, Wesley was avoiding her, the credit card bills were piling up, and even her mother could not afford to bail her out.She started waiting for me outside my office building. On the first day, she stood in the wind for two hours wearing a thin dress. The receptionist called me. “Mr. Lowe, there’s Ms. Whitfield here claiming to be your wife.”I replied, “Have security handle it according to visitor policy.”The following day, she came with Eleanor and several relatives.Eleanor stood in the lobby and shouted, “Everyone, come take a look! This man gets a little money and suddenly he doesn’t want his wife or child anymore!”At first, the relatives joined in.“What married couple stays mad at each other forever?”“The child is still so young. How can you be so heartless?”When I came downstairs, Gareth was with me. He handed Eleanor a condensed list of the evidence.“Would you like me to play the recording

After the meeting, Wesley was the first to make a run for it. Heather chased him down to the entrance of the law firm.Gareth and I watched from a second-floor window as she grabbed Wesley by the arm.“Why did you say that back there? Didn’t you promise you’d marry me?”Wesley shook her off. “Stop acting crazy.”“Crazy?” Heather’s voice rose so sharply that passersby turned to look. “You’ve been living off me all these years, and Nicole calls you Daddy! Now you’re calling me crazy?!”Wesley let out a cold laugh. “Your money? Wasn’t it all your husband’s money you were spending?”Heather was startled for a moment. He continued, “Heather, you didn’t seriously think I was going to marry you, did you? You’re thirty, you have a kid, you don’t have a job, and you’ve been cheating on your husband. Back when your husband was sending you money every month and you had a house and a car, I didn’t mind having a little fun with you. But now he’s cut you off, and he’s coming after the money,

The day I finally confronted them, we met in the conference room at Gareth’s law firm.Heather arrived late. She wore a white dress, her eyes red and swollen as though she had prepared herself to cry in front of everyone. My mother-in-law, Eleanor Frost, followed close behind. The moment she stepped through the door, she pointed at me and started yelling.“Desmond, do you have a conscience at all? My daughter gave you a child and waited for you for three whole years, and now you’ve got a little money and think you can just divorce her?”I did not get up. Gareth gestured for her to sit down.Eleanor slapped the table. “You're telling me to sit down? We’re settling this today, once and for all! The house belongs to Heather and Nicole. They need somewhere to live, and the child belongs with her mother. You’re a grown man. Why can’t you just buy another house?”Heather lowered her head and began to sob. “Desmond, I know you’re angry, but Nicole is still so young. She can’t grow up wi

The next day, I moved out of the apartment. Heather assumed I had finally given in and sent me a message.[Maybe we should both take a few days to cool off. Just stop making a scene about money.]I did not reply. Instead, I checked into a hotel near my office and spread all the evidence across the table. When Gareth arrived, he had a laptop with him. “Let’s get started.”I exported three years’ worth of bank transfers. 3,000 dollars every month, plus an extra 1,000 to 3,000 dollars on holidays. The mortgage was another 1,500 dollars a month, automatically deducted from my primary account. The car loan had long been paid off. The car was registered in my name, yet Heather had been the one driving it all along.Gareth looked through the records and let out a disbelieving click of his tongue. “You haven't been supporting a family. You’ve been funding a small-scale criminal enterprise.”I said nothing. …Over the next few days, I visited the property management office. The mana

There was complete silence on the other end of the line.A few seconds later, Heather shrieked, “Desmond! You’re going to regret this!”I ended the call. Barely thirty seconds later, her name flashed across my screen again. I let it ring out, one call after another, until the messages began pouring in.[Are you really going to stand by and watch Nicole and me suffer until we have nothing left?][Are you even a man?][What kind of husband does this to his wife?]I turned off my screen. Heather called from noon until evening, but I did not answer a single call. She started sending me pictures of Nicole eating her meals, practicing dance, and falling asleep with her stuffed animal in her arms. Finally, she sent a voice message. In the background, I could hear Heather trying to stifle her sobs.Nicole spoke carefully, almost timidly. “Mr. Lowe, can you please not be mad at Mommy? Mommy said if you send us money, I can keep going to dance class.”After listening to it, I turned m
