Chapter 4

Autor: Perfect Timing
Heather finally realized the money had not come through on the morning of the fourth day.

She sent me three messages in a row.

[Desmond, did you forget to transfer the money this month?]

[The mortgage payment is coming up.]

[Text me back when you see this.]

I did not reply. A moment later, my phone rang.

I had just left the paternity testing center. A brown kraft paper envelope lay on the passenger seat beside me, its seal still intact.

I answered the call. Heather’s voice was already edged with anger. “Desmond, what do you mean by this? Why haven’t you transferred the money?”

“I didn’t forget.”

She fell silent, clearly caught off guard. “What?”

“I said I didn’t forget.”

There were two seconds of silence on the other end before her voice shot up. “You're really cutting off the money? Have you lost your mind?

“The mortgage is due on the 15th. Nicole’s preschool just sent out a tuition notice, and her dance classes need to be renewed, too. My credit card payment is due today. And you choose now to pull this stunt?”

I watched the stream of people passing beyond my windshield. “I’m not pulling any stunt.”

“Then what are you doing? Trying to force me to give in by holding money over my head?”

I countered with a question of my own, “Heather, does Nicole even know I’m her father?”

She was silent for a long time, then she started crying.

“Desmond, does it really matter what she calls you? Wesley has only been helping me carry some of the burden. He picks her up, takes her to events, and listens when I feel like I’m falling apart.”

“So you let my daughter call him 'daddy'?”

“It’s just a word!”

I let out a bitter laugh. “To you, it’s just a word. To me, it’s the place I’m supposed to have in her life.”

She sniffed and softened her tone. “Desmond, I know you’ve been upset since you came home. Can’t we talk this through, one step at a time? Just transfer the money first. My credit card payment is due today. If I miss it, I’ll be late.”

Of course. In the end, it always came back to money.

I opened the photo she had just sent me. It was a picture of Nicole in her dance outfit. She stood in the practice studio, smiling sweetly.

The next message was a voice recording from Heather. I tapped play. My daughter’s small, childish voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Lowe, please don’t be mad at Mommy. Mommy’s crying.”

‘Mr. Lowe.’ After listening to that, I found myself growing strangely calm.

Heather hurried to explain on the other end of the call. “She’s still getting used to you. Please don't hold it against the child. Desmond, just send 3,000 dollars first. No, 1,500 dollars would do. I really can’t get through today without it.”

I asked, “What about Wesley?”

Her voice tightened. “Why are you bringing him into this?”

“Didn’t you say he was helping you carry the burden?”

“His studio has been having cash flow problems lately. He needs money to keep things running, too. How could I ask him for more?”

I said, “Didn’t you tell me I’d done nothing these past three years except sending money?”

Her breathing hitched. “I only said that because I was angry.”

“No. You were right.” I spoke slowly, letting each word fall with deliberate weight. “So this month, you’re not getting a dime from me.”

The divorce proceedings moved much faster than Heather had expected. The evidence was simply too thorough to dispute. At first, she still tried to claim the house, the car, and a hefty amount in child support.Gareth asked her just one question, “Are you sure you want all of this evidence submitted to court and examined in open proceedings?”She fell silent. In the end, we reached a final settlement. The marriage was dissolved.Nicole would live primarily with me, while Heather would have visitation rights according to the agreed schedule.I would retain control of the apartment. The increase in the apartment’s value attributable to mortgage payments made during the marriage would be calculated and settled in accordance with the law, but she would have to move out by a specified deadline. The car was registered in my name and was returned to me that same day.As for the substantial gifts and investment funds she had transferred to Wesley without my consent, I would pursue thei

Heather did not last much longer. The supplementary card had been canceled, Wesley was avoiding her, the credit card bills were piling up, and even her mother could not afford to bail her out.She started waiting for me outside my office building. On the first day, she stood in the wind for two hours wearing a thin dress. The receptionist called me. “Mr. Lowe, there’s Ms. Whitfield here claiming to be your wife.”I replied, “Have security handle it according to visitor policy.”The following day, she came with Eleanor and several relatives.Eleanor stood in the lobby and shouted, “Everyone, come take a look! This man gets a little money and suddenly he doesn’t want his wife or child anymore!”At first, the relatives joined in.“What married couple stays mad at each other forever?”“The child is still so young. How can you be so heartless?”When I came downstairs, Gareth was with me. He handed Eleanor a condensed list of the evidence.“Would you like me to play the recording

After the meeting, Wesley was the first to make a run for it. Heather chased him down to the entrance of the law firm.Gareth and I watched from a second-floor window as she grabbed Wesley by the arm.“Why did you say that back there? Didn’t you promise you’d marry me?”Wesley shook her off. “Stop acting crazy.”“Crazy?” Heather’s voice rose so sharply that passersby turned to look. “You’ve been living off me all these years, and Nicole calls you Daddy! Now you’re calling me crazy?!”Wesley let out a cold laugh. “Your money? Wasn’t it all your husband’s money you were spending?”Heather was startled for a moment. He continued, “Heather, you didn’t seriously think I was going to marry you, did you? You’re thirty, you have a kid, you don’t have a job, and you’ve been cheating on your husband. Back when your husband was sending you money every month and you had a house and a car, I didn’t mind having a little fun with you. But now he’s cut you off, and he’s coming after the money,

The day I finally confronted them, we met in the conference room at Gareth’s law firm.Heather arrived late. She wore a white dress, her eyes red and swollen as though she had prepared herself to cry in front of everyone. My mother-in-law, Eleanor Frost, followed close behind. The moment she stepped through the door, she pointed at me and started yelling.“Desmond, do you have a conscience at all? My daughter gave you a child and waited for you for three whole years, and now you’ve got a little money and think you can just divorce her?”I did not get up. Gareth gestured for her to sit down.Eleanor slapped the table. “You're telling me to sit down? We’re settling this today, once and for all! The house belongs to Heather and Nicole. They need somewhere to live, and the child belongs with her mother. You’re a grown man. Why can’t you just buy another house?”Heather lowered her head and began to sob. “Desmond, I know you’re angry, but Nicole is still so young. She can’t grow up wi

The next day, I moved out of the apartment. Heather assumed I had finally given in and sent me a message.[Maybe we should both take a few days to cool off. Just stop making a scene about money.]I did not reply. Instead, I checked into a hotel near my office and spread all the evidence across the table. When Gareth arrived, he had a laptop with him. “Let’s get started.”I exported three years’ worth of bank transfers. 3,000 dollars every month, plus an extra 1,000 to 3,000 dollars on holidays. The mortgage was another 1,500 dollars a month, automatically deducted from my primary account. The car loan had long been paid off. The car was registered in my name, yet Heather had been the one driving it all along.Gareth looked through the records and let out a disbelieving click of his tongue. “You haven't been supporting a family. You’ve been funding a small-scale criminal enterprise.”I said nothing. …Over the next few days, I visited the property management office. The mana

There was complete silence on the other end of the line.A few seconds later, Heather shrieked, “Desmond! You’re going to regret this!”I ended the call. Barely thirty seconds later, her name flashed across my screen again. I let it ring out, one call after another, until the messages began pouring in.[Are you really going to stand by and watch Nicole and me suffer until we have nothing left?][Are you even a man?][What kind of husband does this to his wife?]I turned off my screen. Heather called from noon until evening, but I did not answer a single call. She started sending me pictures of Nicole eating her meals, practicing dance, and falling asleep with her stuffed animal in her arms. Finally, she sent a voice message. In the background, I could hear Heather trying to stifle her sobs.Nicole spoke carefully, almost timidly. “Mr. Lowe, can you please not be mad at Mommy? Mommy said if you send us money, I can keep going to dance class.”After listening to it, I turned m
