SELENEI raise my hand to knock, and before I can, I hear Victor's voice through the door, loud, angry, and another voice answering him, a woman's. I freeze. They're arguing. Down the street, a couple slows their pace, and someone else glances toward the house. Great, exactly what I need. I smile at them, radiating nothing-to-see-here, just a perfectly normal woman standing outside a stranger's house in a country she has no business being in. They eventually move on.The voices inside get louder, and something in me reacts before my brain catches up. I open the door without knocking and walk in. I quickly shut the door behind me.The room goes silent. Victor turns toward me, his face changing immediately. Beatrice looks like she's seen a ghost. Victor closes his eyes and pinches the bridge of his nose. "Selene."I smile weakly. "Hi."His eyes narrow. "I told you to stay on the jet.""I know.""Then why are you here?""I had a feeling."His expression makes it very clear that the ex

SELENEThe moment Victor steps off the jet, I disappear into the bedroom and close the door behind me. I change my clothes, and I stand in front of the mirror staring at my reflection for a few seconds. I look ridiculous, not because of the clothes, the fitted jeans and dark hoodie are fine, but because of what I'm actually preparing to do. Sneak after a man who has spent most of his life making decisions I disagree with, a man I've openly disliked for years, and a man who would be furious if he knew what I was about to try. I pull the hood over my head. Perfect. Now I look like someone with questionable intentions, which, technically, I have.I check my phone. The location-sharing app is still open from the flight. I'd added Victor to it earlier, while he was in the bathroom and his phone sat charging on the side table, unlocked from whatever he'd last been doing on it. It took less than a minute to add his number and turn sharing on, quiet enough that it never once pinged his sc

VICTORMy grip on her arms tightens. "You gave up your daughter." My face contorts with rage as I spit the words at her.Her face changes instantly. "Don't.""You let them take Helena. You handed her over, and she ended up dead.""You don't know what you're talking about." She tries to twist free and winces against the grip of my hand."You let them take her, and she died in my arms," I yell at her."I was powerless!" Her other hand strikes my chest as she yells back. "You are also to blame for her death. If you hadn't interfered in her one year, she'd still be alive."She's breathing hard when she says it. "I warned you, but you wouldn't listen. Now you're putting all the blame on me.""Shut up." I release her.She stumbles back, breathing hard. "You don't get to stand in my house and tell me I gave up my daughter easily." Her eyes fill with fury. "I lost her." She points at me. "Do not confuse losing someone with choosing to lose them."I say nothing, only stare at her with everythi

VICTORBeatrice is silent for a moment, not because she has nothing to say, but because she's clearly tired of arguing with me. "I was preparing to go to Kravik City."I almost laugh. "For what?""To petition for his release."A short and cold laugh escapes this time. "You know that won't work."She stiffens. "Don't tell me what I know.""The Kravens don't release people because someone asks politely.""They are not unreasonable," she says, her stance stubborn."They are Kravens," I remind her, in case she's suddenly forgotten who her own people are."And?""And you think they'll listen to you?" Disbelief cuts through my voice."I didn't say they would," she corrects."Then why go?" She looks at me. "Because there are ways to bargain with them."I stare at her. "What do you have?"She doesn't answer right away, and that silence tells me everything. I step closer. "What do you have, Beatrice?""Something they value." Her eyes avoid mine at first, but they slowly move and stay fixed o

VICTORDonderdam appears beneath us through a thin layer of clouds. Dark green stretches of land give way to dense clusters of buildings, old stone structures standing beside modern towers. Even from this height, I can see the difference between Veldhaven and the cities I know. Donderdam has never tried to look harmless. Neither have the people who built it.The jet begins its descent.Selene sits across from me, looking far too comfortable for someone who has spent the last several hours ignoring every warning I've given her.I glance at her. "You're staying on the jet."She looks up from her phone. "You've said that.""I'm saying it again." My face serious."I heard you the first three times." She sighs."Good."She smiles, but I don't. "When we land, stay here. Keep your phone with you.""I can do that.""Keep it on," I instruct her further."I know how phones work, Victor." Irritation creeps into her voice."I'm serious," I emphasize. The smile disappears from her face. "So am I.

ARIANA"So someone is hiding something inside my own company," I say, as the restaurant hums around us."Not necessarily your company. The Wolves may simply be the access point."My expression hardens. "Access to what?""I don't know yet." He closes the folder. "But I want to find out.""How?""By following the money backward.""I already pay people to do that."He smiles. "I've heard."I give him a flat look. "You enjoy irritating me.""Sometimes.” He chuckles.“And what do you think you're going to see that all those people didn't?" He doesn't respond right away, then says quietly, "People look at whether something is legitimate. I look at why someone needs it to look legitimate."That lands, and I don't respond right away either. Mason leans forward slightly. "Your people are looking at the transactions. You're looking at the people. I'm looking at the behavior."I glance toward the folder. "How long do you need?""Give me a few more days.""That's what everyone says when they wan
