Chapter 2

Author: Fox C
The hemorrhaging knocked me out cold for another full day.

When I came to, Leon happened to be pushing the door open. He rushed to me, panic on his face, and gripped my hand tight.

I could see the lipstick print on his collar, plain as day.

"You were fine, so how did you suddenly start bleeding out like that? Do you have any idea how terrified I was?"

Sweat beaded across his forehead, and his eyes were rimmed with red.

He looked so heartbroken and devoted that anyone watching would have sworn he loved me to death.

I pulled my hand back and wiped it on the sheet like it was filthy, then told him, "Let's get a divorce."

"What?"

He stared at me, disbelief in every line of his face. "Over a lump of dead tissue, you want a divorce?"

"Elodie, when did you turn into someone this unreasonable?!"

He had more to say, but his phone suddenly rang.

He glanced at the caller ID, then looked back at me. "I already told you, we lost the kid, we can have another. But if you're going to keep using my love for you to drag this out forever, then I'm done indulging you. Think it through, then call me."

I watched his resolute back as he walked off, and felt nothing inside, calm as still water.

Maybe he still didn't grasp what losing me would actually mean.

Once he was well out of sight, I picked up the phone and called his half-brother, Cole. "I think it's time the Ashford family had a new Don."

All these years, I'd fought and bled for Leon, survived death more times than I could count, and that was how I'd built the Ashford family into the power it was today.

Everyone envied Leon his pack of men who would die for him without a second thought.

What they didn't know was that I was the real heart of the whole organization.

If I wanted it, I could put anyone I chose in that position.

A few hours later, a friend request popped up on my phone.

I had a pretty good idea who it was, so I accepted it.

She didn't say a word, but a minute earlier a new post had gone up on her feed.

In the photo, a man in a pink apron stood cooking at the stove.

The caption read: "Pregnancy's made her so picky about food. Lucky she's got me. Love you."

I stared at the photo, calm, and suddenly thought back to my own early weeks of pregnancy.

The morning sickness had killed my appetite for days, and all I'd craved were the noodles Leon used to make.

But when I asked him for them, he'd been so impatient. "I'm the Don now. Cooking my own meals? How undignified!"

Looking back now, it was never the title holding him back.

It was that I'd never been worth even a sliver of his tenderness.

I quietly switched off the phone, looked out the window, and let my palm settle on my stomach.

“Don't worry, baby. Mommy is going to make them pay for this!”

A week later, I was discharged.

But I didn't rush off. First I tracked down the doctor who'd treated Leon back then.

With his help, I got hold of Leon's medical file.

And just as I stepped out of his office, someone slammed hard into me.

The file in my hands scattered across the floor.

"Are you blind?!" Leon snapped, Mia tucked tight behind him, glaring at me.

He clearly hadn't expected it to be me. The instant he registered my face, a flicker of panic crossed it. He let go of Mia and came over. "Elodie. What are you doing here?"

I ignored him and bent down to gather up the file.

But Leon got to it a step ahead of me. "What is this?"

That shot back then missed my heart by an inch and nearly took my life, but thanks to Cole watching over me day and night without rest, I was wrenched back from the hands of death.Once I'd recovered, Cole took me to an estate by the sea.It was a home he had prepared for me long in advance. It was exactly as he'd promised. The courtyard was full of red roses in vivid bloom, and a private climate-controlled greenhouse, untouched by the seasons, held plump and juicy fresh strawberries.Every day I watched the sea at sunrise and the flowers at sunset, my life plain and steady and at peace.Until one day, when a former subordinate came to visit, I heard from him how Leon was faring. The once lofty Don was now caged like a stray dog in that tiny cell, and every day he tried every way he could think of to end his own life. But how could I ever let him have his wish. After all, death was far too kind to him.So I picked out a stack of everyday photos and had a prison guard pass them along to

Mia was sitting in the villa's living room, soothing her belly, when heavy footsteps suddenly came up behind her.She turned and saw Leon advancing on her, eyes blazing red, a knife gripped in his hand.Mia shuddered all over and shrank back on instinct, her voice trembling. "Leon, what are you doing? Don't do anything rash!"By now Leon had been wholly swallowed by overwhelming regret and hatred, with not a shred of reason left. Before Mia could dodge, the sharp blade drove straight into her belly."Aaah!"Mia let out a blood-curdling scream, and blood instantly soaked through her dress. But Leon didn't stop. He gave a hard wrench and tore her belly wide open."You killed the only child I'll ever have, you killed my Elodie, and today I'm going to avenge her."Leon muttered it like a man gone insane.Mia convulsed with pain, and finally she collapsed into the pool of blood, staring fixedly at Leon. "It was you who let me get rid of her baby, you who brought me home because you feared h

Leon had just gotten out of Mia's bed when a knock came at the door."What is it?" Leon opened the door to find the butler holding a pure white gift box."Don, the Donna asked me to give this to you."Leon looked at the box and smugly curled his lips. "Jack was right. A woman shouldn't be allowed too much power. Look at this. It's barely past midnight and she can't wait for me to come celebrate her birthday with her."Leon took the box.Suddenly thunder rolled outside the window. Leon's brow furrowed, and an inexplicable unease rose in him.He opened the box. Inside were only two things: a medical report and a voice recorder. The report stated plainly that the one who couldn't have children was him.Leon's frown drew tighter and tighter. Then he picked up the recorder. The instant he pressed play, Jack's voice came through, crystal clear. The color drained from Leon's face, and even the hand holding the recorder was trembling. He grabbed his coat and ran out like a madman, questioning

I looked at Jack and asked, "You moved on your own and lured me here. What exactly are you after?""To make you die, obviously!""And if I die, aren't you afraid Leon will hold it against you?""Don't even mention that fool to me. I've spent years laying this out piece by piece, and just when I finally get to kill you, he wants you spared."Jack clenched his fist. "Like hell I'd spare you. After tonight, everyone will believe Elodie betrayed the Ashford family, and I'll be the hero who cut out the traitor! And not just you, Leon, that idiot, he's not getting out of this alive either!""Killing Leon still won't make you Don."Jack smiled. "Not me. But his son can."It dawned on me, and my eyes went wide. "The baby in Mia's belly is yours?"Jack: "A little late to realize it now, Elodie. Time to die!"Murder flared in his eyes, and he aimed the muzzle straight at my heart.A gunshot cracked through the air!In that same instant, Cole stormed in with a wave of elites in black behind him.

After that scene, Leon was truly wary of the influence I'd rooted so deeply in the family.Sure enough, the moment he left the hospital, he went off to a private club with his right-hand man, Jack. What they didn't know was that the club, from top to bottom, was crawling with my informants.Jack: "Don, as long as Elodie's still around, you'll never sit securely as the family's one and only power. Today she defied you in front of everyone, and a whole crowd of elites threw themselves in to shield her. Let this drag on and it'll cost you your position."Leon: "Of course I know she can't be allowed to stay. But after everything, she's been with me so long..."Jack: "Don, this is no time to drown in sentiment. You have to root out the threat before it grows!"Leon: "What do you have in mind?"Jack: "We use Elodie's infertility as the opening. Divorce her on those grounds, then find a pretext to strike her name from the family for good.""On top of that, under the banner of purging traitors

"Leon, save me... my stomach hurts so much, blood, there's so much blood..."Mia's whimpering cut through the air, and Leon shot over to her, his face all panic and heartache."Don't be scared, Mia. I'm getting you to the hospital right now."He lifted her sideways into his arms with painstaking care, as if afraid the treasure he held might break. The moment he turned, his gaze fixed on me, every trace of old warmth frozen over. "Elodie, if anything happens to Mia or the baby, I'll make you wish you were dead."I watched Leon's back as he walked away.Slowly I raised my hand. There was a hole blown clean through my palm, and blood kept welling out of it.I laughed under my breath, the sound hoarse and bleak. That gun, the one that had just shot through my hand, was the gift I'd searched high and low for and given him the year he first rose to Don.And now he'd turned the very thing I gave him against me."Elodie? What was that gunshot? Your hand... how did it get hurt this badly?" Cole
