Chapter 3

She blinked.

"Because he thinks I don't matter." I smiled faintly. "But you're the same. Don't flatter yourself. You're just a mirror he uses to prove how important he is. And I know you're the anonymous obsessive fan account that's been harassing me every night."

The team's promo posts and Joe's personal Instagram featured training footage—and Natalie happened to be in the frame. Over time, people who didn't know any better started shipping them, convinced Joe and Natalie were a perfect match, meant to be together.

Somewhere along the way, my phone started getting strange messages. All of them pushing the Natalie-and-Joe ship.

The sender always showed off to me, dumping piles of photos of Joe and Natalie. Sometimes the two of them in a car. Sometimes Natalie clutching Joe's clothes on the sidelines, waiting for him. But barely anyone knew Joe and I were married. Content that pointed, that specific—who else could it be from but Natalie?

Natalie's face finally changed.

"You—"

"Save it. I'll give you two my blessing." I cut her off. "Don't come back. I'm not short on nutrition. I'm short on peace and quiet."

I shut the door before she could get another word out, ignoring the shouting from the other side.

That afternoon, Selena came to pick me up.

She parked two streets over. I loaded a cardboard box into the trunk—full of old photos of Joe and me, little keepsakes soaked in memories.

"Lawyer says three weeks, tops." Selena lowered her voice. "You sure you want to walk away with nothing?"

"I don't want his money." I said. "I just want it over fast."

Selena looked at me and sighed. "You didn't used to be like this. You used to cry when he lost a game."

"Yeah." I stared out the window. "I used to think he was my whole world. Now I'm tired. The world's got more than one man in it."

"He's the most valuable player in the country right now. Walk away from him—what are you gonna do?"

I didn't answer. Maybe everyone thought I couldn't survive without him. But I knew my own strength. Maybe leaving him was the best way to save myself.

Selena started the car. "Natalie show up again today?"

"Mm. Brought nutrition meals. And showed off her family travel clearance."

"Shameless." Selena sneered, spun the wheel sharp. "Vivian, good for you. Remember—just because someone else picks up what you threw away doesn't make it treasure. Trash is trash."

I laughed. It was the first real laugh I'd had in a while.

When I got home, Joe was already there.

He was on the couch, flipping through a folder I'd left under the coffee table.

My heart stopped. Had he found the divorce papers?

I rushed over. When I saw what was inside, I relaxed. Just old documents I'd sorted for the move. I went into the bedroom. The divorce agreement was still hidden in the closet, untouched. I let out a long breath.

"Insurance policies." I said. "I wanted to organize the household files."

Joe glanced at me. Didn't seem suspicious. He tossed the folder back on the table and pulled me down beside him.

"Vivian, I know I've been neglecting you lately." His voice was low. "After this season, I'll take you to Europe. We'll see Paris, London, Munich. You've always wanted to go, haven't you?"

More of those empty promises, meant to soothe but with no end date in sight. I looked at his face, so close, and suddenly it felt like a stranger's.

"Joe." I said. "Do you remember last Thanksgiving?"

He froze.

"Last Thanksgiving, you said the team had an important game. You couldn't come home."

His eyes went blank, like he couldn't place it at all.

But it was a memory I hated with every fiber of my being. Just recalling it made me tremble.

I miscarried on Thanksgiving—lost the baby we'd only had for a few weeks. The day of the surgery, no one answered the phone.

I was going to tell Joe I was pregnant when he came home. He never came home. Our baby was gone before I could.

After the procedure, I saw Natalie's Instagram post: Joe at the training facility cafeteria, two meals on the table, her sitting across from him. Caption: Overtime nutritionist and the quarterback. Thanks for the feed, Captain.

I swallowed every bit of it.

And not just that. The Christmas before. Joe said he was flying out for an away game. I drove him to the airport. Three days later, his fans photographed him at a Nashville restaurant, dining alone with Natalie. I asked him about it. He snapped that it was a team dinner.

And so many other times... Looking at his blank expression, I knew. He didn't remember.

I pulled my hand from his. "Joe, I believed every promise you made." But what I didn't say was: And you never kept a single one.

Not wanting a blowout fight before I left, I stood up quietly, walked into the bedroom, and shut the door.

Long silence outside. I leaned against the door and heard him make a call.

"Natalie, where are you? I need to see you. I have questions."

  • After the Divorce, the Highest-Paid Player Begs Me to Come Back   Chapter 11

Early spring. Kodiak Island, Alaska.Joe stood on the deck of a small whale-watching boat, wind whipping hard enough to make him squint. The captain was a local fisherman, pipe in his mouth, casual. "Good luck today. Humpbacks are right ahead."Joe nodded, zipped his jacket to the collar. The boat glided into the bay. Water like a mirror. Snow-capped mountains in the distance, drifting ice up close. The air smelled of salt and pine. Then he saw me.I was sitting on a bench at the stern in a dark blue winter coat, hair tossed by the wind, a thermos in my hand, turned toward a woman mid-conversation. The woman's back was to Joe—but he knew that laugh. Selena.Joe stood at the other end of the deck, the whole boat between us, and just watched. I was thinner. But I looked well.Selena spotted him first. Her smile froze for a beat, then she turned slowly and gestured for me to look. Our eyes met.My heart was calm as still water. Seeing this man again—no resentment, no bitterness. When I le

Facing the reporters and the fans crowding in, Joe picked up the mic and said just one thing: "I spent five years finding my place on the field. Now I'm going to spend a lot longer finding the person I lost."The room erupted.A reporter called out: "Sir, the messages you cleared from your Instagram and the new ones you've been posting—are they for someone you miss?"He didn't answer a single question. Turned and walked off the stage. Behind him, shutters clicked and voices pressed. He left fast, without looking back. The next day, the NFL released an official notice: Natalie Reed's registered nutritionist credentials were permanently revoked for violating the league's ethics code. She was banned from entering any NFL team facility. The notice never mentioned Joe's name, but everyone in the industry knew what it was about. That same day, Joe sold the house in Kansas City.He packed everything. What could be donated, he donated. What could be given away, he gave away. The playbook, the

Three days later, Joe sat in a conference room at a Kansas City law firm.Across from him: Natalie and her lawyer. Natalie was still in her floral dress, eyes red-rimmed, lips quivering when she saw him walk in, like she'd suffered some unspeakable injustice.Joe didn't look at her. He slapped a USB drive on the table."On this drive: every communication between Natalie and me over the past five years. Texts, messages, Telegram, Instagram DMs, emails. Forty-three thousand in total."Natalie's lawyer frowned."Of those," Joe continued, voice level, "three thousand seven hundred are private messages Natalie sent me outside work hours. About team tactics. Player privacy. And an excessive interest in my personal life."He opened a folder. "This is a record of Natalie accessing player medical files through my team account without my knowledge. Timestamps, IP addresses, accessed content—all documented."Natalie's lawyer started sweating."This is a record of Natalie using my credit card for

Joe boarded a flight to Seattle. On the plane, he kept scrolling through the messages on Vivian's old phone.Natalie's last message to Vivian: "His heart hasn't been with you for a long time. What are you still waiting for? How long has it been since he had dinner with you?"Attached was a photo of Natalie herself sitting in Joe's car, hands on the wheel. In the shot, Joe was asleep in the passenger seat, Natalie's work badge lanyard around his neck.Joe remembered. That day after training he'd been severely dehydrated. Natalie offered to drive him home. He fell asleep in the car. She didn't take him home. She drove around the city for two hours with him in the passenger seat, then snapped that photo while he was out.And sent it to Vivian. And Vivian at the time... He found a draft in the old phone's message folder: "Joe, Natalie says you two are together. But I believe you. Can we talk?"For some reason, that message was never sent.Joe locked the screen and leaned back against the s

Joe stood on the street for a full hour.Three in the morning in Kansas City, empty as an abandoned stadium. He clutched the ultrasound report in his hand, the paper soaked through with sweat, the words starting to blur. He didn't dare let go—like if he loosened his grip, the last proof that Vivian had ever existed would vanish too....By the time he stumbled home, Natalie was there. Sitting on the couch in his old hoodie, knees tucked up. She stood the second he walked in, face pinched with worry. "Where were you? I was worried sick."Joe stared at her. He didn't have the bandwidth to wonder how she knew the door code, or that she'd let herself in while the house was empty. His head was full of me.Under the light, Natalie's face was fine, young, smooth—exactly like the first time he'd seen her at the training facility. She'd been in plain athletic wear, handed him a protein shake, and smiled. "Kane, you need to get that body fat under control."Back then he'd thought she was professi

Selena went quiet for two seconds, then her voice came through dripping with fury. "Last Thanksgiving. You were having dinner with Natalie. Vivian was alone in a hospital, signing her own surgical consent form, getting on that table by herself. Do you have any idea how terrified she was? She called you so many times. You never picked up!""She... she never told me..." Joe's head was splitting. Thanksgiving—he'd been celebrating with his teammates, drunk. His phone was on silent, stuffed in Natalie's bag. He hadn't heard a single ring."She wanted to tell you." Selena said. "But you always said Natalie needed you more. You always said Vivian was just naturally stronger than Natalie. Joe! She wasn't born strong—she was willing to do anything for you. And you—you were such a disappointment!"The line went dead.Joe stood on the street, dazed, the world around him terrifyingly quiet. He rushed home, exhausted, told Natalie to leave, and started tearing through every drawer.Bottom of the n
