Chapter 7

مؤلف: Palma W
When we arrived at Cascadia, both teams were already waiting outside. Julian came around the car and put a hand on my waist. I instinctively moved away.

"Thank you, Mr. Mercer."

Everyone around us fell silent for a moment.

I quickly added, "My shoes slipped. He was just helping to steady me."

The meeting lasted two hours. The proposal I'd led repositioned a legacy data services company as a cloud security platform for small and mid-sized businesses. NorthStar's directors approved it. Afterward, the compliance director pulled me into her office.

"Someone reported that you have a personal relationship with Mr. Mercer. NorthStar is a potential investor. Any marriage, shared assets, or serious romantic relationship must be disclosed."

For the first time, our marriage was out in the open. Not because Julian had introduced me as his wife or because we were celebrating an anniversary, but because I had to declare it on a conflict-of-interest form. I signed my name.

Spouse: Julian Mercer, Founder and CEO of NorthStar Systems.

The compliance director looked up at me in shock. "How long have you two been married?"

"Three years."

"You may have to withdraw from the project."

Outside her office, Julian noticed the form in my hand. "I'll take care of it."

"Don't."

"NorthStar can assign a different project manager."

"That'll only make it look like I got this far because you're my husband."

"That's not how it is."

"No, it's not. But your presence has put me under suspicion again, and it has already cost me the project."

That afternoon, the official email arrived. To avoid any potential conflict of interest, I was removed from the project I'd spent four months leading.

Julian’s POVI received Claire's wedding invitation four years after our divorce.Groom: Noah Reed.Bride: Claire Bennett.Venue: the Green Lake Boathouse, Harbor & Pine's first landmark project and the place where she built her new life after leaving me.Over the years, I learned about her only through public coverage. The firm expanded its team and won a city design award. She and Noah got engaged last year.I no longer asked Maya for updates, and I stopped having my assistant track her schedule. The invitation came with a reply card. I sat in my office holding it for a very long time. The courthouse photo was still in my safe. That day at Blue Heron, Claire had left it on the table, and Rosa returned it to me afterward. In an encrypted backup, I still had that one short voicemail."Julian, I need you."I used to play it over and over. Eventually I understood that torturing myself with the pain wasn't the same as taking responsibility. Real responsibility meant accepting that the mom

The following Christmas, Noah and I went to Leavenworth to visit his family.A familiar black car was parked outside the inn. Julian stood in the snow with an old cardboard box at his feet. Inside were the wooden reindeer my grandmother had carved, along with glass ornaments and silver bells. I'd thought they'd been lost when I moved out."Thank you."I turned to Noah. "This is my ex-husband, Julian."The husband I'd once had to keep secret was now simply my ex.Julian shook Noah's hand. "The Green Lake project turned out great.""Thanks."There was no hostility this time, no need to compete. Maybe truly moving on meant neither of them needed me to prove who had won."I won't stay long." Julian nudged the box toward me. "I just wanted to make sure you're doing well.""I am."Snow settled on his shoulders. This time, he didn't beg. He didn't offer me a house, shares, or a ring."Is there any chance for us, even years from now?"Noah didn't answer for me."Someday, I might choose to buil

I saw Lena again at a hospital foundation event.Harbor & Pine was volunteering for the foundation, while Lena was there as part of a recovery program. After her second attempt, she'd spent months in treatment before moving into a community recovery program. She looked paler than I remembered, and this time, she didn't hide her resentment behind a sweet smile."I've been wanting to apologize in person.""I got your email.""You didn't reply.""Because there was no need."She tightened her grip on the paper cup. "My mother gave the recording to the media, but I wrote the letter. I knew she'd use it to attack you.""So the second attempt wasn't just because you'd lost hope.""It was also revenge." Her voice grew quieter. "I wanted everyone to think you'd driven me to it. That way, Julian would hate you, and at least he'd never go back to you.""You succeeded in making my private medical information public.""I know."She looked up. "You could sue me.""My lawyers are already handling it.

On day ninety, the final hearing was held in King County Superior Court. The judge confirmed that we had both entered the agreement willingly, that the terms were fair, and that our marriage was irretrievably broken. Julian didn't object. When the divorce was finalized, the judge said, "I wish you both the best going forward."Outside the courthouse, Julian asked, "That night at Blue Heron. Did you really not think about starting over? Not even once?""For a second."A flicker of light came into his eyes."Then I realized it wasn't a new beginning. It was just an old habit."The light went out again."Are you leaving Seattle?""No. My friends, my company, my apartment, and my clients are all here. I'm not letting a failed marriage chase me out of my own city."Snow was falling outside the courthouse, leaving a thin layer of ice on the steps. My body remembered that fall before my mind did, and I hesitated.Julian stopped too. He didn't touch me."Want me to call a car?""Someone's pick

On day forty-three of the waiting period, we signed the separation agreement in Rebecca's office. The apartment was mine. Julian kept the house and agreed to cover the mortgage and taxes. We divided the joint accounts based on what each of us had contributed. He dropped his claim for the expenses he'd paid in Europe, along with his offers to give me the house and NorthStar shares. After the lawyers left, he asked, "Can I take you to dinner one last time? At Blue Heron."I agreed.Rosa saw the folder on the table and fell silent. After a moment, she asked, "You two are really getting divorced?""Yes," I said.Julian nodded. "Yes."We sat in our old seats. I ordered waffles. Out of habit, Julian reached over to cut them for me, then stopped himself."I'm sorry.""We've already been through this.""I'm not trying to change your mind."He took out our wedding photo."I kept this locked in my office safe, almost like it proved you belonged to me. Now I finally understand. Being your husband

The NorthStar board investigation lasted two weeks.Julian was removed from the acquisition committee, temporarily lost some of his voting rights, and was ordered to undergo an independent review. The board found that he'd allowed his personal life to affect his business decisions when he suspended the Cascadia partnership. NorthStar reopened the partnership review and offered compensation to the employees affected. He didn't lose the company, but he lost some of the control that had always mattered so much to him.On the day of the Green Lake final-round pitch, the client suddenly cut the budget by twenty percent. Harbor & Pine had three hours to redo the proposal.Maya, Noah, and I turned off our phones and went back to the drawing board. We cut the expensive installations and focused on flexible community spaces, clear private areas, and a plan that would cost less to maintain. The proposal theme was a single line:Boundaries are what make a public space truly belong to everyone.Th
