Chapter 6

مؤلف: Nameless
The abortion was brief. Julia felt as though she had fallen asleep and awakened to discover something gone from her body, as though it had never existed.

Everett did not return to the hospital. Julia was discharged alone the next day. The front door stood partly open, and before she entered, she saw Everett and Lydia wrapped around each other.

Lydia's breathing came in broken gasps. "Everett, it's broad daylight."

"So what? Peter is at school. What are you afraid of? You're the one who tempted me."

Julia stopped, rooted where she stood. Inside, Everett drew Lydia's hand toward his belt and murmured, "Go on."

Julia made herself watch, punishing herself with every second of it. Her eyes burned and her chest seized, and still she did not move.

Veins stood along Everett's forearms, his ears flushed, and his broad shoulders covered Lydia almost completely. Julia knew every detail of the way he looked when desire overtook him.

Remembering the countless nights he had looked at her the same way made Julia violently ill.

Her retching interrupted them. Everett pulled his clothes together and hurried to the door, where he found Julia crying and struggling not to vomit.

He reached for her shoulder. "What's wrong, Jules? Why aren't you still at the hospital?"

The heat of his palm reached through her coat. Julia shuddered and struck his hand away. "Don't touch me. You're disgusting."

Her vision darkened, and pressure closed around her chest. Everett caught her before she fell.

"Even if you're furious, you have to protect your health. This is my fault, not Lydia's. Now that you've seen us, I won't lie. She has endured a great deal for years. Hit me or curse me if you need to."

Julia had imagined this moment. She thought he might beg endlessly, kneel, or plead for forgiveness. She had never imagined this calm entitlement.

There may have been guilt in his eyes, but he spoke as though his betrayal were reasonable.

Her disappointment became so complete that it left her strangely calm. "Continue. I came for something and still have to go to the school."

Her composure irritated him. Everett grabbed her arm. "What else do you want from me? You couldn't give me children, and I still kept this home with you for years. Everyone knows how well I treated you.

"You're almost thirty. Who's going to want you if you leave me? If you love me, why can't you accept the people who matter to me? I made the mistake every man makes. Can't you forgive me once?"

"Of course. You did nothing wrong. This is all my fault. I was blind enough to save you from that knife." The words tore Julia apart even as she spoke them.

Seeing the grief in her eyes, Everett regretted lashing out. He softened his voice. "I lost my head. Forgive me, Jules. You're going to school? I'll drive you."

Julia ignored him and walked away. Everett followed close behind. Neighbors greeted them with the same familiar praise: "Colonel Warden certainly treasures his wife. He escorts Ms. Fenner everywhere."

Julia had heard those words for years. Once, they filled her with happiness because the whole town seemed to recognize his love. Now they sounded cruelly ironic.

She said nothing on the way. At the school gate, Everett forced an embrace around her. "We'll discuss this tonight. I'll pick you up after classes."

"No."

Julia had come only to complete the transition to the new teacher. She no longer had lessons and spent the day organizing records in the office.

Classes had been over for some time when she handed over the final materials.

Only seven days remained before her secured transport would arrive.

At the school gate, she looked automatically toward the old tree, then laughed at herself. Seven years, and her body still looked for him without being told. Whenever Everett came home, he had always waited under that tree.

As she stood distracted, Lydia appeared suddenly, seized Julia's arm, and dropped to her knees.

"Ms. Fenner, if you hate me, I'll leave. But you cannot hurt my son. Peter is my whole life."

Julia left the laboratory after dark, with Silas beside her as usual. He waited almost every evening so they could walk back together.Everyone at Briar Ridge understood that Silas loved her. After Everett's intrusion, Silas did not confess again. Julia had said she was not ready, so he would wait. Time was one thing he believed they still had.As usual, he walked her to the entrance of the women's dormitory."The dining hall is making the vegetable rolls you like tomorrow morning. Should I bring you some?"His eyes were so bright and hopeful that he looked almost boyishly eager, and Julia could not make herself refuse."All right."That simple answer filled him with joy. Even his back seemed lighter as he walked away beneath the moon. After he disappeared, Julia turned toward the stairs and found Everett waiting in the dark corridor."Why are you here?"He stood in shadow, and instinct warned her before she could see his expression."Julia, I miss you. I came to take you wi

Julia stood stunned inside Everett's arms. Her body reacted before her mind.Years of habit lifted her hands. If awareness had not returned in time, she might have wrapped them around his waist.Silas recovered from the ground, too alarmed to care about the dirt across his face."Who are you? Let her go."He swung at Everett. Everett dodged, released Julia, moved her aside, and answered with a faster punch. The men grappled. Julia shouted twice without stopping them, drew a breath, and stepped directly between them.Everett's fist was already moving toward her. Recognition widened his eyes, but he could not stop the force. He twisted away and crashed into a tree.Julia glanced at him once, then turned to Silas. Blood marked the corner of Silas's mouth, and he wiped it away when she noticed. He hissed through the pain.Julia frowned. "Are you all right? That needs treatment."Silas opened his mouth, wanting to ask who the man was, but Everett had already risen."Julia, why di

After the breakthrough, Julia spent nearly every waking hour in the laboratory and sometimes forgot meals entirely.Station leadership ordered every researcher to protect their health. Each evening, Silas supervised Julia's dinner and made her walk outside before returning to work.A month had passed since she arrived. Mountain temperatures were already dropping, and Julia's thin coat left her hands constantly cold.Silas built her a small hand warmer. One autumn evening, a falling leaf settled in her hair.He watched her for a moment and reached toward it. Julia noticed and stepped back instinctively."I only wanted to remove the leaf." His voice was quiet, and his eyes held unmistakable tenderness.Something tightened in Julia's chest. After a brief hesitation, she remained still. Silas lifted the leaf gently and slipped it into his coat pocket."Julia, I planned to wait until you remembered me, but I don't think you have." Silas looked down with a self-conscious smile.Befor

A month passed before Everett finally accepted that Julia was dead.He submitted papers seeking to end his lawful marriage to Lydia and waited for military and civil review. In his mind, Julia was the only woman he had ever considered his wife.He polished the framed portrait of Julia every day. The urn he believed held her ashes sat behind it, and he spent hours speaking to her.He intended to request a transfer back to Latchford so he could spend the rest of his life in the house they had shared. He would also complete the legal separation from Lydia.Everett carried the transfer request to General Alden's office. The general was away, and Daniel brought tea and asked him to wait.As Everett prepared to sit, an envelope on the desk caught his eye. He froze and moved closer despite knowing he had no authority to examine it.The routing cover read, "Project 403 Research Progress Report."Everett stared at the handwriting. He could not be mistaken. Julia had written those words.

When Julia opened her eyes, every part of the room was unfamiliar. She moved one hand and felt cool fluid entering through an IV line. Looking around, she seemed not yet fully awake.Silas Arden entered carrying fruit and stopped when he saw her conscious. He set everything down, hurried to support her, and arranged the pillows behind her."Ms. Fenner, you're finally awake. Are you in pain? I'll get the physician." Silas turned and rushed from the room. The doctor arrived quickly, performed a brief examination, asked several questions, and instructed Julia to rest.Sunlight filled the window. Julia narrowed her eyes and remembered the fire, Lydia's attempt to kill her, and the Project 403 team breaking into the discipline room before the flames reached her."Ms. Fenner, have an apple. The doctor says you need fruit and vitamins." Silas held out the peeled fruit and placed the small knife safely on the table.Julia accepted it and studied him. Something about his face seemed fami

Holding the urn, Everett could not remember leaving the mortuary or walking back to the house he had shared with Julia.Only after entering did he notice how much was missing. The small wooden train had once stood on the cabinet. Remembering the day it shattered felt like needles driven through his heart.Julia's travel bag remained beside the bedroom bed, filled with clothes and identity papers. She truly had intended to leave. He had imprisoned her and caused her death. But why had the discipline room burned when he had asked Lydia to check on Julia every day?Everett stood abruptly. "Take me to Warden House."Daniel had remained nearby and started the car without question.By the time they arrived, the guests had left. Estelle was still complaining in the sitting room."That wretched woman died and still managed to ruin my party. Lydia, at least you gave us a grandson. Everett will see your worth soon enough."Lydia stood obediently beside her. "Estelle, now that Ms. Fenner
