Chapter 2

Author: Ginger
My phone buzzed with another notification. Lawrence had posted on Facebook.

The photo showed a locked front door, captioned: You can't spoil a woman who won't listen. If she doesn't want to break up, she'd better get on her knees and beg.

At some point, he'd unblocked me. The post was meant for my eyes.

I could feel his smugness through the screen.

The comments were even better.

"Lawrence, you're a role model for all men."

"Even a woman as gorgeous as Camilla gets trained like a dog by you."

"Lawrence, give me some pointers, quick. My girlfriend just dragged me by the ear and beat me up."

"Your sweet little girlfriend must be so heartbroken right now, waiting for you to come comfort her. Too bad she's in for a disappointment."

One profile stood out, a girl named Anna. It stood out because her picture and Lawrence's formed a matching couple set.

She was his "close friend" from the bar, and the reason behind our fight and this breakup.

Because I'd seen the photos she sent him, several shots of lingerie, asking him to pick the prettiest one.

Lawrence took the task seriously, even telling her that sheer black panties would look stunning in bed.

I confronted him about why he was picking out lingerie for another woman.

But he didn't care at all. "It's just underwear, what's the big deal? Stores don't put up 'no men allowed' signs on the lingerie section. Camilla, if you're going to get jealous over something like this, then there's no point in us being together."

Just because I objected to him shopping for another woman's underwear, he broke up with me again.

This time, I didn't think I was wrong, so I didn't rush to apologize. And I wasn't planning to.

The comments kept piling up. Riding high on the attention, Lawrence started a group video call on Messenger.

He even pulled me into it, not recognizing my profile picture or name. That's how little I mattered to him.

But only he and Anna connected.

"Hey baby, miss me?"

That was the first time I'd ever heard the word "baby" come out of Lawrence's mouth. He'd never called me anything but "Camilla."

Anna tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and smiled coyly. "I just ordered takeout and I have to go pick it up myself. Nobody to bring it to me. It's so hot outside.

"Look, Lawrence, my face is all flushed from the sun." She angled the camera down deliberately, her cleavage practically bursting out of the screen. "I wish I had a boyfriend to help me out. Your girlfriend is so lucky to have such a great guy."

Even after all this time, even with someone else mentioning picking up takeout, Lawrence still hadn't noticed I'd never come home.

He put on a convincing show of sympathy for Anna.

"She's the lucky one. Meeting me was God's gift to her. She's not as high-maintenance as you, either. She does all the housework. Whenever she asks me to help, I threaten to break up with her, and she never dares ask again."

I laughed. All my daily care and devotion had become nothing but a trophy for Lawrence to brag about.

Without hesitation, I joined the video call.

When my face appeared on screen, Lawrence clearly wasn't expecting it. "Camilla?"

I ignored him and said one thing. "I'm your ex-girlfriend now, Lawrence. I accept your breakup."

I hung up, blocked him, and cut all ties.

Since he loved breaking up so much, who was I to say no?

I expected Lawrence to take me at my word and disappear from my life for good. But just ten minutes later, my phone rang.

I kicked myself for forgetting to block his number.

When I picked up, his furious voice blasted through the speaker. "Camilla, where are you? Why haven't you come home? You broke up with me in front of all those people. Do you have any idea how humiliating that was?"

"Wrong, Lawrence. You were the one who broke up with me. I just agreed." I hung up before he could say another word.

I used to think his voice was pleasant. Now it was just noise.

Wasn't he the one who wanted to break up? So why did he sound so reluctant on the phone?

He didn't call again, but a text came through shortly after.

"Camilla, who gave you the nerve to block me? I'm warning you, don't play games with me. I'm not in the mood to coddle you. Finish that twenty-page apology and hand it in. My birthday is in three days. If you don't show up, you're dead."

I already knew that if I replied, the text wouldn't go through. He'd blocked my number.

One-way communication, designed to make me panic and cry. That was his specialty.

But this time, he'd be disappointed. Breaking up with him was exactly what I wanted.

"What?"Lawrence and I said it at the same time. Adam rubbed his forehead with a weary sigh. "Why else do you think I agreed to marry you so easily? With my position, politicians and powerbrokers are lining up to marry their daughters off to me. Why would I choose you? You really never wondered?"He was talking to me, but Lawrence was the one who crumbled. He sank to the ground like every bone in his body had dissolved, crying and laughing at the same time."So that's how it is... The woman you've loved all along was Camilla... I'm such a fool. A woman like you would have countless admirers, and you chose me of all people. And I threw you away." He rambled between slaps to his own face, one after another, like a man who'd completely lost it.Adam stepped in front of me, his gun trained on Lawrence. "You've caused enough damage to my life with Camilla. Breaking into the Alderton estate? That crosses a line. Once I deal with you, our lives can go back to normal."His finger tightened on

Lawrence stood there with his mouth half open, speechless. After a long silence, he slowly sank to his knees and pulled a few crumpled pages from his pocket."Camilla, this is my apology letter. Please forgive me. I know I was wrong! I'm on my knees. Whatever conditions you set, I'll agree to all of them. Just come back to me, please?""No. We're never going back.""Yes we can! You can divorce Adam, and we'll get married right away. I don't want to wait a single day. Please, I'm begging you!" Lawrence's voice had a desperation I'd never heard from him before. He'd thrown away every shred of his pride, kneeling at my feet just to earn my forgiveness.I saw a reflection of my former self in him. It was equal parts pathetic and pitiful."We're done for good. I've told you so many times, we're over! I will never marry you!"But Lawrence stayed stubbornly on his knees, his hands clutching the hem of my skirt in a death grip until a dark voice sounded behind me.It was Adam. "Lawrence, I alr

I rolled over comfortably in bed and realized I'd slept all the way until noon.I washed up and headed downstairs. The maid greeted me with a smile. "Ma'am, it's lunchtime. What would you like to eat?"I was actually hungry. I thought about it and listed a few dishes. "Oh, and a coffee. Milk, no sugar."The maid smiled and brought a cup from the table. "Mr. Alderton already made your coffee. Milk, no sugar."That caught me off guard. How did he know how I took my coffee? Then I figured my parents had probably told him.But after I'd listed what I wanted to eat, the maid didn't leave. She just stood beside me, smiling.I couldn't help asking, "Is the chef already cooking?"The maid shook her head. "Mr. Alderton gave the chef the day off. He's making your lunch himself, and it's exactly what you just asked for. He truly cares about you, ma'am. You're very lucky."Adam, a Don who answered to no one, was cooking my lunch himself?I walked into the kitchen and found him dropping butter into

Lawrence didn't sleep at all that night. He couldn't wrap his head around it. In his mind, Camilla only knew how to hang her head and apologize. As much as he refused to admit it, it seemed his Camilla had left him for good. The more he thought about it, the more he panicked. He called Camilla. But the call wouldn't go through. She'd blocked him. Then it hit him. Every single one came back with that same red exclamation mark. Finally, the fear set in. A terror unlike anything he'd ever felt gripped him, his chest constricting while his heart hammered uncontrollably. His mind was a mess. He tried to piece together everything that had happened, but none of it made sen

Lawrence practically crawled out of the restaurant.Adam pulled out my chair, spread a napkin across my lap, and waved over the waiter to pour my wine. "I'm sorry. I kissed you on impulse earlier. I owe you an apology."I blinked, then looked up at him. "No, you don't have to apologize. You're my husband."I couldn't say I loved this man I'd only met once, but this was the path I'd chosen. My father had chosen him for me. I trusted his judgment, and I intended to be a good wife.A relaxed smile broke across Adam's face. He cut my steak for me, then raised his glass. "That makes me happy to hear. Now that we're married, I want you to come to me with anything. Like that guy just now. If you want him dead, just say the word.""Doesn't it bother you? That I'm still tangled up with my ex?"Adam shook his head. "No. All I feel is sorry that you had to deal with all of this alone, and angry at myself for not being there two years sooner. Don't let someone like that ruin the mood. Come on. Let

He glanced at Adam beside me, then back at me, and scoffed. "Camilla, you think you can grab some random guy off the street and I'll fall for it?"He looked back at his friends, then ordered me, "Go pay my tab right now, then come with me to the registrar's office. Otherwise, we're done."I instinctively looked for Adam, but he was gone. Panic washed over me. Had he seen me tangled up with my ex and gotten upset?Just as I was at a loss, Adam reappeared with the restaurant manager. He stood beside me and gently draped his arm around my shoulders. Such a simple gesture, yet it gave me more courage than I'd ever had.The manager approached Lawrence, his expression distant, barely maintaining a professional smile. "Sir, Mr. Alderton has reserved the entire restaurant. I'll have to ask you to dine elsewhere. Also, your bill today comes to twenty-five hundred dollars. Will that be card or cash?"Lawrence exploded. "Reserved the whole place? I was here first! You're throwing me out? Just wat
