Chapter 1

Ginger
After leaving the rental apartment, I carried my takeout to a five-star hotel.

The moment I stepped through the hotel doors, I almost laughed.

Before I left home, I'd been the princess of the Ferrante Family, with absolute power, status, and wealth.

After getting together with Lawrence, I'd sunk to living in a run-down rental, worrying about bills and rent.

Now that I'd decided to leave him, there was no reason to keep depriving myself.

I handed over my ID to check in. The receptionist gave me a polished smile, though her eyes kept darting to the takeout bag in my hand.

Apparently, someone eating a cheap burger combo couldn't possibly afford a five-thousand-dollar-a-night presidential suite.

And my stained clothes seemed to strengthen the impression that I was some pitiful woman who'd been kicked out of her home.

"Kicked out" wasn't exactly right, though. We'd just had a fight.

The first big fight, he told me we were done. I begged him shamelessly, did everything I could to hold on, and he grudgingly took me back.

The second time, he broke up with me again. I begged, I apologized, but he didn't take me back. Instead, he made me write a three-page apology letter.

"Camilla, writing apologies is supposed to teach you a lesson. Obviously the last one didn't work, so this time make it five pages."

I stayed up all night writing the most heartfelt apology I could, but it wasn't long before the third breakup came.

But this time, even a ten-page apology couldn't move him. He threw my things out the door.

In the end, I broke down, fell to my knees in front of him, sobbing and begging him not to leave me. Only then did he spread his hands with a shrug.

"Camilla, your apology wasn't sincere enough. Looks like you still don't understand how serious this is."

I didn't want to know how "serious" it was anymore, or how many more pages he'd make me write.

This time, I wouldn't write a single word.

After checking in, I tossed the takeout bag into a trash can right before stepping into the room.

I soaked in the bath and ordered the most expensive set meal on the menu, complete with wine and dessert.

In the past, my head would have been full of Lawrence, and I'd still be groveling.

I'd cried, begged, written apology after apology, bought lingerie to please him, all to keep him from leaving me.

Once, I even bought something I'd always found humiliating, cleaned it, stripped down, and knelt between his legs.

But he barely glanced at me, pushed me aside with one finger, mockery in his eyes.

"Camilla, is your body the only thing you know how to beg with?"

But now I lay comfortably in the tub, swirling a glass of wine, shopping online for designer clothes.

The moment I closed the page, a message from Lawrence popped up.

"Finish that twenty-page apology as soon as possible. My birthday's in three days. Don't forget my party."

That was just how he was. Even after breaking up with me, whenever he needed something, he'd grace me with a few curt words from his throne.

I stared at those words for three seconds before replying, "We already broke up."

The message had barely sent before a glaring red exclamation mark bounced it back.

He'd blocked me again the second after he sent it.

His childish, idiotic games actually made me laugh. No heartache this time, just amusement.

And apparently, he still hadn't noticed that I'd never come back from picking up that takeout.

"What?"Lawrence and I said it at the same time. Adam rubbed his forehead with a weary sigh. "Why else do you think I agreed to marry you so easily? With my position, politicians and powerbrokers are lining up to marry their daughters off to me. Why would I choose you? You really never wondered?"He was talking to me, but Lawrence was the one who crumbled. He sank to the ground like every bone in his body had dissolved, crying and laughing at the same time."So that's how it is... The woman you've loved all along was Camilla... I'm such a fool. A woman like you would have countless admirers, and you chose me of all people. And I threw you away." He rambled between slaps to his own face, one after another, like a man who'd completely lost it.Adam stepped in front of me, his gun trained on Lawrence. "You've caused enough damage to my life with Camilla. Breaking into the Alderton estate? That crosses a line. Once I deal with you, our lives can go back to normal."His finger tightened on

Lawrence stood there with his mouth half open, speechless. After a long silence, he slowly sank to his knees and pulled a few crumpled pages from his pocket."Camilla, this is my apology letter. Please forgive me. I know I was wrong! I'm on my knees. Whatever conditions you set, I'll agree to all of them. Just come back to me, please?""No. We're never going back.""Yes we can! You can divorce Adam, and we'll get married right away. I don't want to wait a single day. Please, I'm begging you!" Lawrence's voice had a desperation I'd never heard from him before. He'd thrown away every shred of his pride, kneeling at my feet just to earn my forgiveness.I saw a reflection of my former self in him. It was equal parts pathetic and pitiful."We're done for good. I've told you so many times, we're over! I will never marry you!"But Lawrence stayed stubbornly on his knees, his hands clutching the hem of my skirt in a death grip until a dark voice sounded behind me.It was Adam. "Lawrence, I alr

I rolled over comfortably in bed and realized I'd slept all the way until noon.I washed up and headed downstairs. The maid greeted me with a smile. "Ma'am, it's lunchtime. What would you like to eat?"I was actually hungry. I thought about it and listed a few dishes. "Oh, and a coffee. Milk, no sugar."The maid smiled and brought a cup from the table. "Mr. Alderton already made your coffee. Milk, no sugar."That caught me off guard. How did he know how I took my coffee? Then I figured my parents had probably told him.But after I'd listed what I wanted to eat, the maid didn't leave. She just stood beside me, smiling.I couldn't help asking, "Is the chef already cooking?"The maid shook her head. "Mr. Alderton gave the chef the day off. He's making your lunch himself, and it's exactly what you just asked for. He truly cares about you, ma'am. You're very lucky."Adam, a Don who answered to no one, was cooking my lunch himself?I walked into the kitchen and found him dropping butter into

Lawrence didn't sleep at all that night. He couldn't wrap his head around it. How could Camilla, who had worshipped him like a god, be the princess of the Ferrante Family? How could she have married someone else? He'd never seen her look so cold, so dismissive. In his mind, Camilla only knew how to hang her head and apologize. As much as he refused to admit it, it seemed his Camilla had left him for good. The more he thought about it, the more he panicked. He called Camilla. But the call wouldn't go through. She'd blocked him. Then it hit him. Three days ago, after breaking up with her, he had blocked her first. He started firing off message after message, from every account he had. Every single one came back with that same red exclamation mark. Finally, the fear set in. A terror unlike anything he'd ever felt gripped him, his chest constricting while his heart hammered uncontrollably. His mind was a mess. He tried to piece together everything that had happened, but none of it made sen

Lawrence practically crawled out of the restaurant.Adam pulled out my chair, spread a napkin across my lap, and waved over the waiter to pour my wine. "I'm sorry. I kissed you on impulse earlier. I owe you an apology."I blinked, then looked up at him. "No, you don't have to apologize. You're my husband."I couldn't say I loved this man I'd only met once, but this was the path I'd chosen. My father had chosen him for me. I trusted his judgment, and I intended to be a good wife.A relaxed smile broke across Adam's face. He cut my steak for me, then raised his glass. "That makes me happy to hear. Now that we're married, I want you to come to me with anything. Like that guy just now. If you want him dead, just say the word.""Doesn't it bother you? That I'm still tangled up with my ex?"Adam shook his head. "No. All I feel is sorry that you had to deal with all of this alone, and angry at myself for not being there two years sooner. Don't let someone like that ruin the mood. Come on. Let

He glanced at Adam beside me, then back at me, and scoffed. "Camilla, you think you can grab some random guy off the street and I'll fall for it?"He looked back at his friends, then ordered me, "Go pay my tab right now, then come with me to the registrar's office. Otherwise, we're done."I instinctively looked for Adam, but he was gone. Panic washed over me. Had he seen me tangled up with my ex and gotten upset?Just as I was at a loss, Adam reappeared with the restaurant manager. He stood beside me and gently draped his arm around my shoulders. Such a simple gesture, yet it gave me more courage than I'd ever had.The manager approached Lawrence, his expression distant, barely maintaining a professional smile. "Sir, Mr. Alderton has reserved the entire restaurant. I'll have to ask you to dine elsewhere. Also, your bill today comes to twenty-five hundred dollars. Will that be card or cash?"Lawrence exploded. "Reserved the whole place? I was here first! You're throwing me out? Just wat
