CHAPTER FORTY TWO- PT2

Everyone else knew. They all were so sure of themselves.

Stacey talked about helping people with a fire in her eyes. Devon lit up when he explained his ideas for a tech startup, while using law to save and change lives.

Everytime we had such conversations, I couldn't help but envy them. They were so certain about their futures, and I was still drifting about, unsure of myself.

Even random kids at school, the ones I barely spoke to, had these neatly packaged dreams. Veterinarian. Architect. Lawyer. Music producer, Actress and so on. Their futures sounded rehearsed, confident, like they'd already lived them in their heads.

And then there was me.

The girl with a dozen hobbies, half-finished ideas, and a blank space on her college application where the “career goal” section was supposed to go. That paper haunted me, and as college drew closer, so did my panic grow.

Unplanned Sleep over CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE Alexa’s POV It was just past midnight when I heard something outside. At first, I thought I imagined it. I’d been curled up in bed for over an hour, scrolling aimlessly through my phone, pretending to be sleepy but wide awake with thoughts I couldn’t quite turn off. Just after I had relaxed, my phone rang, startling me from how loud and unexpected it was. I almost cursed out in the middle of the night. After seeing the caller ID, my anger immediately dissolved and it's was immediately replaced with a smile. "Hey." "Hey. Do you mind opening your window?" I furrowed my brows. "Why? ' " Because I'm outside. " Huh? I tiptoed to the window, heart fluttering, and pulled the curtain aside. I peeked outside, and sure, there he was. Devon stood there in his hoodie, hair slightly messy from the wind, a crooked grin lighting up his face even in the dark. As soon as he caught sight of me, he spoke into his phone, even though I could perfec

44.Alexa’s POVI hadn’t planned on getting a job. Like at all. One moment I was helping out, minding my own business, and then in the next second, boom... you're hired. Right after I was sure I was finished studying for the day, I had decided I would take another walk today. Thankfully, it had rained the day before and it wasn't so hot. Nevertheless, I still put on a bit of sunscreen, just in case it got a little brighter later in the day. I was just wandering, trying to escape the suffocating pressure of not knowing what I wanted to be. The future was this blurry, glittering fog everyone else seemed to be driving through with their high beams on—and I was stuck, headlights dim, unsure of which road to take.Even though I had received a bit of comfort and words of encouragement from Devon (thanks babe), I didn't that I was going to keep sulking and keep my butt in place and do nothing. If my passion wasn't going to come to me, then I was definitely go out and find it myself. Afte

The Weight of Unspoken ThingsCHAPTER FORTY THREEDevon’s POVThere’s a quiet kind of tension people carry when they’re trying too hard to act normal. And right now, Kai and Stacey were both loaded with it.We were all sitting in the school library for our final group study session before finals. It was the last one we had decided to have as a group before we could be left to personally read on our own. Kai being homeschooled and not part of our school had decided to join us so we could all hangout later. Textbooks and papers were scattered across the table, highlighters open, but no one was really talking. Stacey kept her eyes on her notebook, barely acknowledging anything Kai said. And Kai well, he kept sneaking glances at her when he thought no one was looking. As much as he tried, he wasn't being discreet. But I was looking. I’d been looking for days. The tension wasn’t new, but it had been getting worse. I didn't know if they had met or if something had happened between them

Studying for FinalsCHAPTER FORTY-TWOAlexa’s POVMy head was starting to ache. Not the kind of ache you get from too much noise or not enough sleep, but the deep, buzzing kind that settled behind your eyes when you stared at too many notes for too long. My fingers were cramped from writing, my highlighters were bleeding dry, and I’d re-read the same sentence in my history book five times without absorbing a thing.“I need a break,” I groaned, tossing my pen onto the notebook and flopping backward onto the rug. “Like... an actual break. Not just scrolling through notes and pretending it counts.”If I couldn't get one, I actually believe I would go batshit crazy any minute from now. Devon didn’t even look up. “We had a break thirty minutes ago.”I inwardly groaned. Although he was my boyfriend, times like this had me wanting to actually beat the shit out of him. Devon was smart, and he barely had trouble studying. But sometimes, he was just too intense, like right now. “That wasn’t a

DemieCHAPTER FORTY-ONEAlexa’s POVThe party was loud in the way all good high school parties were—music thumping through the floors, lights flashing in sync with bass drops, laughter spilling from every corner. I wasn’t even sure whose house it was anymore. Someone said it was Jayden’s cousin’s friend. Didn't matter. Everyone we knew was here.Since our finals were drawing closer, someone had suggested throwing a party as a way to have fun before anything got serious. After our very successful weekend get away by the way, my boyfriend, my best friend and my boyfriend's best friend as well had each returned and resumed our normal lives. Kai being homeschooled, hang out with us a lot. After all, Stacey and him had resolved their grudge from ages ago and seemed to have a relationship of sorts between them. It was still awkward, but the intensity and tension about them had ceased, which in my case, was a win-win. I’d lost track of Stacey a while ago, probably off grabbing drinks, but
