Chapter 2

Autor: His Shadow
After the divorce agreement was signed, Melanie went to the hospital. On her way there, she stumbled upon Tracy's Instagram post.

It was a picture of an apartment.

On the pale green couch, Tracy had her bare legs resting on Raymond's lap and was flashing a peace sign at the camera.

The caption read, "I want to be part of your past as well."

Melanie was just a college junior when the Strickland family went bankrupt. Her father, Morris Strickland, couldn't accept what had happened and took his own life by jumping off a building.

Her mother, Bethany Adkins, was shoved down the stairs by debt collectors and left in a vegetative state.

In a single night, Melanie found herself abandoned by the world, left wandering the streets with only a few of her belongings.

On her third night sleeping in the hospital corridor, Raymond had a falling out with his family. After selling everything of value he owned, he appeared before her with 18 thousand dollars.

"Melanie, I'm homeless now, just like you. If you feel sorry for me, could you let me stay by your side?"

Melanie froze, then threw herself into Raymond's arms and cried her heart out while calling him a big dummy.

Flustered, Raymond quickly wiped her tears and smiled. "Yeah. When it comes to you, Melanie, I'll always be a big dummy."

They had rented a tiny apartment for six months with eight thousand dollars and used another three thousand dollars to make it feel like home.

Melanie would fumble her way through cooking to make Raymond's favorite spaghetti bolognese, whereas Raymond would grumble before scooping her into his arms, chiding her for walking around barefoot.

Even the proposal happened in that little apartment.

After regaining his status as the Johnson family heir, Raymond twirled Melanie around the room and vowed, "This place will always belong to you, Melanie."

Yet now, he had forgotten everything he had promised just because Tracy said she wanted to be part of his past.

Tears slid down Melanie's cheeks before they were wiped away swiftly.

Taking a deep breath, she left a comment under Tracy's post. "You can keep whatever I don't care for. They suit you just fine."

She refreshed the page, only for the post to disappear.

And just like that, Raymond's call came in, his tone furious and accusatory as he questioned, "Melanie Strickland, what in the world is wrong with you? You made Trace cry!

"I don't care where you are right now. Get over here and apologize to her right this second. If you don't, I won't be paying your mother's hospital bills anymore."

Upon hearing that, Melanie couldn't help scoffing.

Seven years ago, when she refused the Johnson family's help and insisted on paying Bethany's hospital bills herself, Raymond had grabbed her hand, his face red with anger, and exclaimed, "Melanie, she's my mom too!"

But now, just because Tracy had cried, he was threatening to cut off Bethany's medical care.

Holding the phone with a slight tremor, Melanie simply said, "Fine."

"What?" Raymond frowned, thinking he'd misheard.

Melanie drew in a steady breath before speaking calmly but firmly, "I can handle my mom's hospital bills myself."

Throughout her seven years in the Johnson family, Melanie had never stopped working.

Now, she was already a fairly well-known designer in the country. Even without the Johnsons, she could afford the hospital bills.

Raymond could be heard breathing hard on the other end before laughing in anger. "Fine. You've got guts—I'll give you that!"

The entire process of detaining, evidence collection, and sentencing took just 15 days.Melanie watched as Laura's face drained of all its color.Laura, who was usually always prideful and arrogant, was taken away in a disheveled state, her hair in complete disarray, and looking like a deranged woman.Melanie also watched as the Johnson family empire, the one that had oppressed her for seven years, collapsed at her feet because of her.As for Tracy, Vincent had collected enough evidence to prove that she had bribed the hospital doctors to kill Bethany, so she was also taken away and later sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve.Raymond looked like he aged 20 years in court, completely losing all his spirit.Since Laura wasn't directly involved in Johnson Group's management and affairs, she was only stripped of all her assets. However, it was only ten days later, when she was unable to accept the fact that she'd lost her privileged life and was now in the bottom rung of soci

Raymond's words struck the crowd like a lightning bolt, making everyone freeze on the spot, especially Gianna and the rest of Tracy's friends.Laura was also stunned. "That's impossible! I've seen Tracy's pregnancy reports! She is pregnant with the Johnsons'—""Tracy had bribed the gynaecologists at the hospital. Tom has already investigated everything," Raymond said with much difficulty as he produced a folder that Tom had just given to him."Tracy didn't just fake her pregnancy. She also faked being the one who saved my life three years ago, impersonating Melanie the whole time."She's also been using the Johnson family's name to bully and oppress others. This is all the evidence."Laura ignored Tracy's pale, shocked face and snatched the folder from Raymond.A short while later, she flung several documents at Tracy. The sharp edges on the paper left long, painful papercuts on her face. However, Tracy didn't dare to wipe away the blood that trickled through the cuts. Instead

Gianna and the others immediately went after Tracy, screaming in terror, "Somebody, help! Melanie pushed Tracy off the pavilion!"Laura and the other guests immediately hurried toward them.It was a very similar scene all over again. As soon as Tracy caught sight of Laura, her eyes turned red as she held her stomach pitifully, saying, "Mrs. Johnson! I was just telling Melanie to behave herself and not to degrade herself by being with disreputable people out of spite toward Ray…"I didn't think that she would get angry with me and say that… that she didn't like Ray anymore, and then, she even pushed me off the pavilion… She swore she would make sure the Johnson family would never have an heir…"I-I'm so scared, Mrs. Johnson!"Tracy then burst into tears.Gianna and the others also wept along with her."That's right, Mrs. Johnson! We all saw it happen! Tracy is such a kind person, but Ms. Strickland yelled and cursed at her like she was going to kill her!"Yeah, I also heard her

The world seemed to freeze for a moment.Raymond opened his mouth to speak, but he suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood instead."Mom is… dead?"H-How could that be? Stop joking around, Melanie! This isn't funny! How could Mom be dead?"She can't be… She can't be dead…"Raymond wouldn't stop shaking his head. However, his mind went back to the time he first met Bethany.Back then, he couldn't put up with Laura's control anymore and ran away from home. It had been raining heavily in Bell City that day, and he wouldn't stop crying as he kept running down the streets in the rain.Bethany was the one who first noticed him and brought him home.He remembered how Bethany poured him a warm glass of milk, dried his hair, and gently told him, "Don't be afraid. Just sleep well for the night."That had been the first time he'd ever experienced the warmth of a family. So, when he heard that the Stricklands had gone bankrupt, and Bethany and Melanie had nowhere to go, he insisted on go

Raymond practically flew down the stairs when he saw Vincent's car stopping at the entrance."Watch your head," Vincent said, gently opening the door as he escorted Melanie out from the backseat.Melanie didn't really dress up that day. She only had a light touch of makeup on her face, and even her dress was a plain and simple white one.Yet, she was instantly the most eye-catching person at the entire banquet, most probably because of how elegant her actions and mannerisms were, thanks to years of practice."Melanie… Y-You're here…"Raymond stared at the person whom he'd been dreaming of day and night, who was now standing right in front of him, and suddenly began to stammer. On the flipside, Melanie was poised and confident as she greeted him."Yes. Congratulations."It was just two words. Raymond then realized that he'd burned his fingers with the cigarette butt still between his fingers."Melanie, you've misunderstood things. This birthday banquet is just a—""Ray!"Trac

"Who told Melanie to keep clinging to the position of Raymond's wife? If I never provoked her, she would never have given up and left on her own accord," Tracy said, sneering."And Laura too. She's also another dummy. I just had to say a word or two to frame Melanie, saying that my stomach hurt, and that senile old hag immediately scrambled to avenge me. It's hilarious!"Every single word felt like a poisonous knife, slashing the image of the kind, sensible, and innocent young lady Raymond had always had of Tracy, leaving her completely unrecognizable. His bodyguard asked in a trembling voice, "Should we still go in, Mr. Johnson?"Raymond closed his eyes and turned to leave, saying, "Don't tell her that I was here."Raymond went back to the manor and drowned his sorrows in wine, one glass after another. He recalled everything that Tracy had just said. She faked being the person who saved his life because she only wanted to marry into wealth. She abandoned the pregnant Melanie b
