Chapter 2

Evil SIL
That night, when I got back to my dorm, the class group chat was blowing up with messages.

Sharon had sent a long rant, every line dripping with grievance.

"I really don't know how that note ended up in my pocket. As you all know, there's only one guaranteed admission spot, and Cassandra's always done well academically. I've always looked up to her. But today…

"I only meant to help her pick up her pen. I never expected things to turn out like this.

"I don't care that I missed the exam. As long as Cassandra can secure the spot, I'll be at peace. I just hope no one misunderstands me. I really didn't cheat."

The replies below were a mix of sympathy and outrage.

"Don't cry, Sharon. We get it! It's obvious someone's jealous of you and trying to screw you over!"

"It's scary when you think about it. Cassandra seems so quiet normally. Who would have thought that she'd be so evil!"

"She'd frame her own roommate just for the guaranteed spot? Her grades might be good, but her character is trash!"

"Hey, Cassandra, explain yourself! Don't play dead!"

As I watched the messages pop up nonstop, I turned off my phone expressionlessly.

Trying to explain myself to a bunch of idiots who had been blinded by that fake act would only be a waste of time.

If Sharon wanted to play games, then fine. I could just play along.

The next morning, as soon as I stepped into the classroom, I immediately sensed the tension.

The normally noisy classroom went quiet for a few seconds before hushed whispers could be heard. Everyone looked at me with contempt, like they wanted nothing to do with me.

Sharon sat in the front row, her eyes red and puffy, obviously from crying all night.

When she saw me, she shrank back, which immediately made a few guys glare at me.

The harshest look came from Travis Navarro, the school sports representative.

He was Sharon's number-one fanboy, always using his size to back her up and intimidate others.

Travis remarked sarcastically, "Framing others and still showing up to class? Some people really have no shame."

I ignored him and headed straight for my seat.

Just as I was about to sit down, a few lines of comments floated past. "Travis dumped half a bottle of super glue on Cassandra's chair!"

"That's hilarious! Well done! Give that villain a taste of her own medicine!"

"That's industrial-strength glue. Once she sits down, her pants will be ruined. She won't even be able to rip them off. Let's see if she still dares show her face then!"

I paused, glancing at my chair. Sure enough, the surface glistened slightly under the light.

Travis and a few guys were making faces at me, looking like they were waiting for a spectacle. Sharon turned her head too, pretending to read while sneaking glances my way.

Acting like I didn't notice a thing, I calmly sat down.

"She sat down! It's going to get interesting!"

Travis pumped his fist, his face all twitchy with excitement.

But even after a few seconds, I was still sitting there composedly. I even adjusted my posture and pulled out my textbook, like there wasn't anything wrong.

"Wait, what?"

Travis froze, muttering, "Did the glue fail?"

He instinctively reached into his pocket to check if the bottle was actually empty.

The moment his hand went in, a shrill, agonized scream cut through the classroom, making everyone jump.

Travis shot up from his seat. And as if something had grabbed him, his body twisted wildly as he clawed at his pants, trying to rip them off.

"It burns! Oh my god! Help me! My leg!" he screamed while clawing at his upper thigh frantically.

As it turned out, he'd been too careless after pouring the glue. He hadn't tightened the cap before shoving the bottle into his pocket.

And thanks to my constitution that rebounded my misfortune, the glue bottle in his pocket burst.

Half a bottle of industrial-strength glue spilled all over the inside of his thigh and his private parts, instantly fusing fabric and skin.

The agony from the chemical burn was more than most people could take.

Two weeks later, Sharon was officially arrested on multiple charges. While in custody, she refused to participate in any of the interrogations. Her only request was to see me.I hadn't intended to go, but Nathan said seeing how things turned out for her would be good closure, a way to put an end to the shadow of my past misfortune.Through the glass of the visitation room, I saw Sharon again. She was dressed in prison clothes, and her hair was brittle and messy.Because of her own misdeeds rebounding on her, the face she once prided herself on was now covered in persistent red sores that made her look grotesque and terrifying. As I walked in, she lunged at the glass, her bloodshot eyes fixed on me. "Cassandra, how? How did you manage to beat me?"She ground her teeth. "I was supposed to be the favored one! The heavens were on my side!"I looked at her calmly. "When have the heavens ever helped you? Was it when your uncle swapped your exam papers, or when you stole from others?"

Sharon lay sprawled on the floor. With her face as swollen as a balloon, she desperately tried to cover the screen."Shut it off! Shut it off now! This is fake! It's all doctored!" she screamed hysterically.Unfortunately for her, no one believed her anymore. Police sirens could be heard right then, just in time. Before long, a few policemen strode onto the stage."Which one of you is Sharon Deleon and Daniel Shaffer? You've been reported for theft, defamation, computer system sabotage, and bribery. You're coming with us."Upon seeing the police, Sharon completely lost it.As the police took her past me, she glared at me with resentment in her eyes. "Cassandra, you ruined me! I'm supposed to be the destined heroine! Why won't Nathan help me…"Listening to her muttering only made me think that she really had lost it. I looked at her coldly. "Those who do evil will bring disaster upon themselves. You're only reaping what you sowed."Daniel was taken away, too. With his head hung l

At that moment, the doors to the hall abruptly flung open.A cold, deep voice rang out, instantly silencing the entire room. "Who dares lay a hand on her?"Everyone froze, instinctively turning toward the door. Against the light, a towering figure in a black trench coat strode over with long, decisive steps. The man had sharp features and radiated an overwhelming aura, with two rows of black-clad bodyguards behind him. It was Nathan.Sharon's eyes lit up instantly.Smoothing her skirt, she flashed a smile, ready to greet him, but Nathan didn't even glance her way.He strode straight through the crowd, shoved aside the security guards blocking his path, and placed me safely behind him.Nathan turned to scan the room with his piercing gaze before his eyes settled on a tense Daniel and Sharon. Sharon forced a smile. "Nathan, you're here. Cassandra just—""Shut it," Nathan uttered coldly. His gaze dropped to the bracelet on Sharon's wrist. "You're telling me that this is a token

Sharon went all out to make the show a spectacular one. Not only did she hype it up in the class group chat, but she also paid to make it trend on the campus forum."Campus belle Sharon and campus heartthrob Nathan will soon be together! Their token of love revealed!""The studious vixen Cassandra will be punished and utterly humiliated at the school assembly!"Although I still couldn't reach Nathan, I managed to find his flight information.Due to the storm, his plane was delayed and wouldn't land until tomorrow morning, which meant everything Sharon was claiming right now was just her performing a solo act.The next day, I reached out to Daniel first. "Mr. Shaffer, I'm willing to admit my wrongdoing."Although Daniel was rather surprised, it didn't take long for him to turn arrogant. "If you'd known things would come to this, why bother doing all this in the first place?"Cassandra, as long as your attitude is sincere, the school can still let you keep some dignity.""I want

That bracelet… It was the one my grandmother had given me before she died.My grandmother had told me that I was born with a delicate destiny, which made me prone to misfortune and dark forces. This bracelet, passed down for generations in my family, could stabilize my destiny, allowing me to live like a normal person. For over a decade, I'd worn it constantly, never taking it off. That was until three years ago.My childhood friend Nathan Davison was about to go abroad for his studies when he got into a severe car accident. The doctors had fought for three days and nights to save him. In the end, they had even declared him in critical condition, saying he wouldn't make it through that night. To save him, I removed the wooden bracelet I wore to protect my life and placed it around the unconscious Nathan's wrist.I believed that since the bracelet could suppress my misfortune, it could shield him from death as well.Miraculously, Nathan woke up the next day. The woman in the photos was dressed in revealing clothes while walking in and out of upscale clubs in the arms of different men.Next to the photos was an "academic fraud report" that showed all of my research data, each stamped with glaring red words like "plagiarized" and "fabricated".What was even worse was that the speakers began looping a synthesized voice recording. "As long as there's money, what's a guaranteed admission spot worth? I stole all that data from Sharon anyway…"The voice sounded exactly like mine."Oh my gosh. Is that really Cassandra?""You never really know a person, huh? She acts so upright, and yet this is what she does behind the scenes?""That's disgusting! And she's playing it during her presentation? Has she lost her mind?""Serves her right! I knew something was off about her. Turns out she's been doing shady stuff all along!"The chatter from the audience hit me all at once, overwhelming me.The administrators' faces were as black as coal, and D
