Chapter 8

Author: Josie Ginger
Celeste's hand loosened, and her phone clattered to the floor. Blood rushed to her head, sending pain shooting through her. She felt like she was going through the ordeal of being slashed again.

So, Terence was the one who'd hired that man to do that to her so that he could get even on Winona's behalf.

Celeste's lashes trembled, and her heart twisted painfully. She could barely breathe through the agony. She sobbed in earnest before drifting off into a restless sleep.

She didn't know how much time had passed before Winona's voice awakened her. The latter cried, "Didn't you say you would get back at her for me, Terence? Why are you mad now? You left me at the banquet hall last night because of her, and you're being so fierce to me now! Do you not love me anymore?"

This time, Terence didn't coax her tenderly. He said, "I promised to get even for you, but I didn't say anything about killing her! Don't you know why I'm mad? It's because you told the driver to run Celeste over!"

He still couldn't shake the image of Celeste lying on the ground with her face ashen as the car slowly crept toward her to crush her. She'd almost died there, and his heart had stopped at that moment.

He remembered her being soaked in blood as he'd lifted her into his arms. He'd rushed her to the hospital and watched as her heart rate dropped so low that it almost evened out. Her face had been devoid of color, and it was almost as if she would never wake up to disturb him anymore.

He'd panicked in that moment, and his mind had been blank as he'd stood outside the ER.

Winona looked at Terence indignantly, biting her lip in fury when she saw the emotions swirling in his eyes. She couldn't read them, nor did she dare to delve deeper into them. All she knew was that she had to act quickly.

She said, "Alright, alright. I know I went too far. I was too impulsive. I heard that Celeste's bodyguards are investigating what happened yesterday. Will she know that I—"

Terence's anger dissipated when he heard her backing down and humbling herself. Before she could finish, he cut her off and said, "She won't. She won't find out anything with me around."

Winona smiled in earnest. "We'll leave it at that, then. Didn't you say you would fake your death and take me away? Do you have everything planned?"

He said, "The corpses have already been transported here. It'll be Celeste's birthday in a week, and there will be a party. That's when we leave."

She relaxed at his words. She dried her tears and clung to him, saying that she wanted to visit a chapel in Astora and pray for their plan to work out.

Terence glanced at Celeste's hospital ward hesitantly, but all Winona had to do was whine softly. He turned back to her and immediately agreed. They left the hospital.

Inside the room, emotions swirled in Celeste's eyes. She bit her lip and called her secretary, saying, "Speed things up at the company. If there are things that can't be dealt with yet, set them aside for now. Buy me a ticket for a flight out of here in five days."

After hanging up, she shut her eyes and tried to stop her chest from heaving. Terence had everything planned out… except for her. She wasn't something he could control. Since he was keeping such a "surprise" from her, she would just ensure that she left before he could.

She didn't want to stay here and deal with the fallout of their impulsiveness.

Celeste spent five days in the hospital. She received two pieces of good news on the day she was discharged.

The first was that her company headquarters transfer was complete, and the second was that her immigration application had been approved. She was free to leave.

Her eyes prickled with tears as she listened to Hayden's excited voice on the other end of the line. She wiped her tears, catching sight of her wedding ring out of the corner of her eye.

Her gaze darkened. After a brief pause, she took the ring off and threw it down a drain.

It was all over now.

At the airport, Celeste collected her boarding pass and made her way to the boarding gate. As she looked around casually, she happened to see Terence and Winona walking side by side while holding hands. They wore matching dark-colored coats, and their outstanding appearances attracted attention.

Celeste watched them calmly until they disappeared from her line of sight. Then, she blocked Terence's number everywhere before removing her SIM card and snapping it in half. She threw it into a trash can and turned around.

It was time for her to board her flight.

"Her answer's no!" Terence shouted. He was still in his hospital gown as he stood beneath the stage. His multitude of bandages peeked out from beneath the gown, and his usually tidy hair was now a disheveled mess. All in all, he looked rather ghastly in his unkempt state. However, he didn't care about the strange looks he received. He continued to stare stubbornly at Celeste."What are you doing, Mr. Ford?" Mason asked, narrowing his eyes as he stood defensively in front of Celeste. "Are you trying to steal my fiancée?"Eyes red with jealousy, Terence glowered at Mason and tightened his fists. But upon recalling his goal, he quickly hurried over to Celeste and said, "Don't marry him, Celeste. Please don't marry him, okay?"I know I made a terrible mistake. I know everything in the past was my fault, but I'm begging you to give me a chance. I'll change. I'll love you with my whole heart…"Afraid that Celeste wouldn't believe him, he pulled out a box he'd brought with him and open

Seeing that Celeste wasn't denying any of that, Hayden began inspecting Celeste's scars with an aching heart. From the start, he'd been worried that Terence would hurt her, but she'd always defended Terence and refused to tell him anything.Hayden's heart broke at the thought of how Celeste, who'd been doted on and cherished by the entire family, had to go through such suffering. After calmly meeting Mason's gaze, Hayden could tell that they shared the same thought. They exchanged a nod in silence before instructing the bodyguards to take Terence away.Hayden hung back to check on Celeste while Mason followed the bodyguards out. He watched as they dragged Terence to a dark, deserted area. Once they dumped him onto the muddy ground, he commanded icily, "Give him 99 cuts, and not a single one less."…In his foggy mind, Terence went back to a moment in his and Celeste's past. He went back to the time when Winona said to him, "I'm not someone who takes a hit without biting back. She

Alas, no matter how much Terence shouted as he ran after the car, the car showed no sign of slowing down, not even for a second. The Terence from three months ago would never have thought that he would one day disregard all of his pride and dignity just to beg for Celeste's forgiveness. It certainly would never have occurred to him that even when he went to such extreme lengths, abandoning all else and saying all the right things, he still wouldn't so much as get a look from her.Slowly, the car left him in the dust. As he watched the car's lights disappear into the distance, he felt as though his heart had been ripped out of his chest. Soon, stubbornness filled his eyes. He wasn't giving up so easily. He must have hurt Celeste too deeply, but that didn't matter. He would remain patient and find the right way to win her back. No matter what it took, he was going to get her back.Terence left looking broken and despairing.…The next few days, he didn't get a chance to see Celeste

Celeste reported to the police, "Someone is deliberately causing trouble here. He attacked my boyfriend on purpose."Terence's eyes widened as he froze in disbelief. Words failed him. He wasn't seriously injured, but his bruises did look rather alarming.Celeste grimly took in the bruises on Mason's face. After asking the nurse for some disinfectant, she carefully began tending to Mason's bruises."I didn't expect this to happen. I'm sorry. From now on, I'll keep an eye on Terence's activity. There was more than Terence wanted to say, but before he could speak, Celeste had lost all her patience. She turned around and walked off without even sparing him another glance.Heart trembling, Terence instinctively ran after her."Don't leave, Celeste. Let me explain myself. I want to apologize to you. Can you let me finish what I have to say…"He kept following her right up to the doorstep. Doing his best to quell his panic, he gingerly reached out to take her hand. Alas, before he could even touch her, the door slammed shut, keeping him out of the house."Celeste, I know I was wrong about everything I accused you of back then. I've looked into everything. I know the truth about what Winona did, and I've made her pay for it, too! I've sent her away."I don't want a divorce, Celeste! I know I hurt you in the past, but I recognize the errors in my ways now. I'll change! I'll turn over a new leaf! Don't be with Mason. Don't leave with him…"Terence's voice was pleading. He press

Terence whipped around just in time to see two people coming out of the car with their hands still clasped together.Celeste, who had to run the company herself, used to dress in sleek business suits all the time. However, after coming to Marconia, she started wearing more skirts and dresses. This time, she was wearing a black miniskirt. Ever since they got married, all of her charm and liveliness had been wiped out as a result of him.He was rooted to the spot, his gaze flickering.
