Chapter 2

Author: Fire Rose
The smile on John's face froze. He stared at me in disbelief, stunned for a long moment.

He clearly had not expected that reaction from me. He saw my calm acceptance, instead of tears and desperate pleas for him not to go.

When Helen heard my words, she suddenly hurled her phone at my back.

I turned around, forcing myself to meet her eyes despite the ache in my chest. I wanted so badly to walk over and hold her, but my feet would not move.

"Helen, stay home with Danny and wait for me. I won't lose. Trust me."

Even if I told her that I did not want to gamble, she would not believe me.

Not just her, but no one would. Anyone who looked at me then would think the same.

So, instead of wasting time explaining, I chose to follow John's plan and find the truth at the table.

When I arrived at the gambling hall, I immediately caught the subtle exchange of glances between John and my opponent.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

They were working together, setting me up, bleeding me dry, then splitting the winnings between them.

I could not understand why John would do that to me. I had never wronged him.

However, people's hearts were impossible to read.

By the time the game began, I found myself already seated at the table without even realizing when I had taken my place.

The dealer started dealing.

It was still Texas Hold'em.

I took a slow breath, forcing myself to calm down as I scanned the room.

Then, I stood up.

"John, go sit next to him. I don't need you here beside me."

John paused, clearly taken aback.

"Nathan, what are you talking about? You think me sitting here means I'm feeding information to the other side? Come on, you're overthinking it."

He then chuckled, but I said nothing.

I pressed my lips together and stared at him coldly.

Was that not exactly what he was doing?

In my previous life, after he sat beside me, I lost again and again, so badly it made no sense. Even at my worst, I would never have played that poorly.

"For safety reasons, not only are you not allowed to sit next to me, none of the cameras behind me are allowed to face me either."

The moment I said that, the room erupted into murmurs.

Hearing them only strengthened my conviction.

There had to be an interference , something around me that caused me to lose repeatedly.

I did not know what John had used to control me. Perhaps something that made my body act against my will.

However, one thing he could not control was my mind.

My opponent, Ian Smith, narrowed his eyes and studied me for a long moment before nodding.

"Fine. Do as he says. Wouldn't want you losing everything and then accusing us of cheating afterward."

I clenched my fists tightly as I stared at him.

Helen had died because of that man.

After Ian was done with her, he passed her around to his subordinates.

Even Danny had been taken overseas, his fate unknown.

Facing the two men who had destroyed my life, I summoned a level of focus I had never reached before.

The dealer finished dealing.

I picked up my cards after a deep breath.

It was a king and a seven.

Ian had a six showing, his hole card unknown.

I placed the king face down. My hand was stronger, so I opened the betting.

"One hundred thousand dollars."

I pushed my chips forward.

Ian smirked and casually followed.

The dealer dealt the third card.

Mine was a nine, and Ian's was another six.

I remained calm, my expression steady.

Ian had the stronger visible hand. It was his turn.

"Three hundred thousand dollars," he spat aggressively.

The crowd around us leaned in, interest piqued.

"Now, this is getting good."

"If it were me, I'd fold. He's got a pair of sixes already."

"Come on, don't be a coward. There are still two cards left. Who knows, he might turn it around."

The last comment came from John.

He took a drag from his cigarette, exhaling slowly as he looked straight at me.

I took Helen and Danny and moved out. From that moment on, I cut all ties with my father.I handed over the money I had won to Helen for safekeeping. Life slowly began to return to normal. However, I did not expect misfortune to find me again. The moment I got home that day, I saw the place in complete disarray. My mind went blank. Without thinking, I dropped everything and rushed upstairs."Helen!"I had just pushed the door open when a gun was pressed to my head.John stood there, holding it steady.I took a slow step back. He limped forward, one leg dragging, his expression cold."John, whatever happened between us is over. Why are you still coming after me?""Where's my wife and son? What did you do to them?!"He let out a faint laugh."Nothing much. Just tied them up and locked them inside."If you don't want anything to happen to them, hand over all your money. Now."For their safety, I had no choice.I raised my hand and calmly pushed the gun aside. He would not s

When I got home, I kicked my father's door open and walked straight in.He seemed to have expected me. He was already sitting there in his armchair, waiting.John's mother, my stepmother, was there too, glaring at me with obvious displeasure."Nathan, what did you do to John? He's your older brother, after all…"I shot her a murderous look, and she instantly fell silent. However, with my father there, she still dared to glare back at me.I spat coldly, "He's not even a real member of the Wesley family. To put it bluntly, he's a bastard, and a bastard is no brother of mine.""Y-You… How can you talk to us like that?""Get out. Unless you want to die."The hatred I had suppressed for so long finally broke free. It terrified her enough that she shut up and hurried out.Only my father and I remained.I stepped forward and kicked him straight out of his chair."Why?""My own father cut my hair, took my blood…"My voice dropped, shaking with fury."All for the sake of some wom

"Now… Do you have anything else to say?"I raised the gun and pointed it at John. He had already wet himself, sobbing as he begged for his life."D-Don't… Don't shoot. I'm your brother. You can't kill me! This was all Ian's idea! He forced me into it! It has nothing to do with me!"A bitter laugh escaped me.'He only remembers that he's my brother now? Too late,' I thought.Every time I closed my eyes, memories of my past life came flooding back. That hatred… I could never let it go.I drove my foot hard into his groin. John collapsed, clutching himself, crying in agony. Then, I turned to Ian. I lifted my leg and stomped down on him again and again. His eyes burned red as he broke free from his restraints and lunged at me.However, without the puppet control he once relied on, he was no match for me.I knocked him onto the table with a kick.Every cent I had once lost, I would take it all back, not a single coin missing.John chuckled and asked, "Nathan, do you know why I'

Ian stared at John, and John stared right back, equally confused.Neither of them could explain what had just happened.I picked up the pistol and tossed it onto the ground between them.I calmly said, "Go on. According to the wager, whoever loses loses a leg."The color drained completely from both their faces. The crowd around us fell into a knowing silence, watching with morbid excitement. After all, Ian had agreed to the bet, so there was no backing out."Damn… This is something else. I've been in this place for years, and I've never seen anything this intense.""Right? Let's see if Ian actually has the guts to cripple himself."Before the murmurs even settled, Ian lunged forward, snatched up the gun, and pointed it straight at John."Like hell I'm breaking my own leg. If anyone's going down, it's the one who caused all this," he spat.John clenched his fists, his eyes bloodshot as he glared back."Nonsense. This was your idea. If anyone should die, it's you!"The two o

I paused mid-motion, a faint smile tugging at my lips."Seems like everyone's very interested in my hand.""Cut the crap and show your cards already!""Yeah, stop stalling. You know you're dead anyway, don't you?""Man… I feel bad for his wife, ending up with a loser like him.""Damn, if I had money like that… His wife's body? Easily supermodel level."Ian exhaled a cloud of smoke, already convinced he had won. He even started doing some ridiculous little victory dance of his own making."Nathan, if you've got the guts, flip your cards. If you don't, I'll take your wife right here in front of everyone."There were rules at the table. When time was up, the cards had to be revealed, win or lose.I let out a quiet laugh, glancing briefly at John before fixing my gaze on Ian's arrogant face.If he lost, he would be lucky just to walk away crippled. That was not a place where he made the rules. There were people above us watching."Fine. I'll show mine," I said.I flipped my ca

Was there something wrong with my eyes? No. That was impossible, absolutely impossible."You lost.""So, do you admit it? We followed your rules and cleared everything behind you. You can't say we cheated.""Everyone saw it, right?""Yeah!""Exactly!"I gripped the cards in my hand so tightly my knuckles turned white. When I looked down again, it had somehow become a pair of threes. In that instant, all the color drained from my face. What the hell? It was too bizarre. It felt like I was falling into a bottomless abyss, struggling without any hope. Was I really going to relive the same tragedy from my past life? Why was I given a second chance at all?A sharp slap snapped me back.Helen's voice trembled with anger. "Nathan, I'm divorcing you."The moment she finished speaking, Ian's men began to harass her."Well, look at that body… It'd be a waste without a man to appreciate it. Why don't you come with me…"My fist slammed straight into his face as I exclaimed, "Get lo
