Chapter 7

Author: Burping Puppy
Stephen's grip tightened around Noelle's throat. She started seeing double, but she forced herself not to pry his hand away.

Noelle trusted her mother. Julia had worked for the Sedgwicks for years, watched Stephen grow up, and always treated his parents with love and respect.

When Stephen's mother, Miranda Graham, was newly pregnant, someone approached Julia in private, claiming they had a gift to deliver.

Instead, they offered her two million dollars to secretly put a drug that could cause a miscarriage in Miranda's food every day.

Julia wasn't tempted. She told Oscar and Miranda everything, and from then on, she tasted Miranda's food herself before every meal.

Miranda gave birth safely, but someone later broke Julia's leg in retaliation. She still walked with a limp.

After everything Julia had done to protect the Sedgwicks, Noelle couldn't believe she'd neglected Oscar so badly that he'd died.

On the day Oscar died, he'd sent Julia away, saying he had confidential business to deal with. He was alone in his study when Julia heard books fall to the floor.

Worried something was wrong, she went to check on him, but Oscar had locked the door from the inside. By the time she found the spare key and opened it, he wasn't breathing.

No one knew what had happened in that study.

When Stephen learned of his father's death, he flew into a rage and threw Julia out of the house.

Miranda only let Noelle stay because she hadn't forgotten how Jacob had once helped her secure her place in the Sedgwick family.

Noelle had tried to explain everything she knew to Stephen again and again, but he'd never believed her.

If dying would finally make him leave Julia alone, maybe it would be worth it. She closed her eyes and waited to die.

But the next moment, the pressure on her throat was gone.

Noelle gasped for air, coughing so hard that tears spilled from her eyes.

Stephen stared at her, his eyes full of hatred and something else she couldn't read. Then he drove his fist into the mirror.

Glass shattered across the white floor, leaving a few bright red drops of blood among the shards.

Rachel, who'd been hiding nearby, screamed.

"Get out! All of you, get out!" Stephen shouted.

Rachel knew she'd gone too far. She nodded frantically and fled.

The other guests had heard the commotion. When they saw her leaving, they hurried out too, not wanting to get on Stephen's bad side.

Soon, only Noelle and Stephen were left in the enormous house.

Noelle glanced at his bleeding fist before walking past him to get the first-aid kit from the study. When she returned, he was brooding alone in a corner.

"Let me bandage your hand."

The moment she touched him, Stephen shoved her hard. She fell, landing palm-first in the broken glass.

Noelle sucked in a sharp breath. Sweat rolled down her forehead, and the color drained from her lips. Still, she didn't cry out. With trembling fingers, she pulled out the shards of glass embedded deep in her palm.

Stephen shot her a cold glance. "Don't pretend you care."

Her palm was numb with pain, and she didn't have the strength to argue. Once she'd removed the last shard, she wrapped her hand in gauze and went back to Stephen.

"Let me bandage your hand," she repeated.

This time, Stephen didn't push her away. He let her carefully tend to his injured hand, her fingers still trembling.

As she got to her feet, Noelle said quietly, "Don't do that to yourself again. Your mom would hate to see you hurt."

Stephen tipped his head back, staring at the ceiling and laughing bitterly. "She doesn't care about me. To her, I'm just a puppet she can marry off to gain control of the family."

Noelle frowned. She had no idea what was going through his head.

"She's your mother. Of course she loves you. She's arranging this marriage because she thinks it's best for you."

Her words did nothing to reassure him. He sprang to his feet with a disbelieving laugh.

"She loves me? She's never really cared about me! She even treats you better than me! And now you're telling me to go along with this marriage?

"You think I should just let them push me around and spend my whole life as their pawn? Aren't you in love with me? Then why are you taking her side?"

Noelle hadn't expected him to say any of that.

She'd always thought of Stephen as proud and strong-willed. Once he'd made up his mind, there was no changing it. He'd certainly never budged when it came to blaming Julia for Oscar's death.

But now he looked like a wounded little boy who couldn't pull himself together.

She understood him less than ever.

Noelle looked up at him. "I thought you liked Rachel. Wouldn't marrying her be what you want? Or would you marry me?"

While Stephen lay unconscious, his company was actually doing better than before, thanks to Daniel's help. After the crash, Noelle sought out the officer handling the case. The information she provided gave the police a new lead.As the police dug deeper into the crash, they uncovered several old cases. Eventually, they traced the crash back to Rachel's parents, Roger Thayer and Linda Carter.Even as they were arrested, Roger and Linda glared at Noelle and shouted, "We should've made sure Stephen died in that crash! He betrayed Rachel! He deserved to die!"At their trial, Roger and Linda were in tears as they blamed Stephen for everything."If he hadn't toyed with Rachel's feelings and driven her to hire a killer, why would people our age go after a young man like him?""We're parents, Your Honor. We only did it because we love our daughter. Please have mercy on us!"But their tears weren't enough to sway the court. Both Roger and Linda were soon sentenced to prison. The office

Rachel's sentencing should have been a relief, but Noelle's heart raced with worry."Please be careful, Stephen. I'm worried the Thayers might come after you for this."Stephen brushed off her concern and replied casually, "They won't. They're too busy cleaning up Rachel's mess to worry about me. Anyway, I've gotta go. I'm driving. I'll bring you something good to eat later."After hanging up, Noelle tried to tell herself she was worrying over nothing.Just then, a nurse came in to say it was time for Miranda's tests. Noelle struggled to lift Miranda into a wheelchair, then wheeled her out of the room. There were so many people waiting for tests that Noelle spent ages in line. By the time she got back to Miranda's room, Stephen still hadn't shown up.Worried again, she called him, but a woman answered instead."Hello, this is Mavrelle Hospital. He's been in a serious car accident. He was unconscious when he was brought in."The phone slipped from Noelle's hand and hit the floor

Stephen's first words after waking left Noelle baffled. She gave his chest a light thump."You scared me to death! What happened? You have to tell me everything!""Alright. Let me explain."Stephen had suspected something wasn't right about Julia's death. He'd gone to the hospital to check the security footage, only to learn that someone had overwritten the data on the hard drive. Recovering the footage would take time. He'd also noticed a man in a cap and face mask who kept appearing near Noelle. When he dug deeper, he discovered the man had ties to Rachel. Before going home, Stephen had arranged for someone to protect Noelle. But he hadn't expected Miranda to keep him confined to his room, leaving him no choice but to send Rachel to see Noelle. When he'd finished explaining, Stephen looked at Noelle with pride. "Remember our first fight, Noelle? I kept my promise."Sunlight streamed through the window, highlighting Stephen's strong features and catching in his hair. He looked

"Do you promise to be faithful to him, respect him, and never deceive him for as long as you both shall live?"The officiant had barely finished speaking when Rachel gazed at Stephen's handsome face, tears streaming down her cheeks."I do!" she shouted. The next moment, Stephen snatched the microphone. "Rachel, can you honestly say you've never lied to me?"The room erupted in shocked chatter. No one had ever seen a groom humiliate his own bride like this.Rachel stepped forward and grabbed his arm in a panic. "Stephen, stop it. We can… we can talk about this when we get back."But Stephen stepped back and pulled his arm free. "I gave you a chance. You got that guy to corner me in an alley so you could swoop in and save me, didn't you?"The large screen showing their wedding photos suddenly went black. Then a recording began to play."Hello? I've got a proposition for you.""One million dollars. Not a penny less!""Deal. I'll give you two million dollars. I want Noelle Anders

Noelle stared at the ivory wedding invitation, trying to steady her trembling fingers.Rachel saw how shaken Noelle was and gave a soft, mocking laugh."I warned you, but you wouldn't listen. Did you really think families like ours would ever accept someone like you? All these years, and you're still as dumb as a rock!"Noelle took the invitation. There it was in black print. Stephen was the groom, and Rachel was the bride.Tears blurred her vision as she checked the groom's name again and again. Flecks of gold foil clung to her fingers, but the black letters still spelled Stephen.Rachel watched with undisguised satisfaction, enjoying every moment of Noelle's misery. She gave a scornful laugh."If Stephen hadn't insisted you come to our wedding, I'd have missed seeing you like this. I have to admit, it feels pretty good."Rachel hurried into a black sedan. Moments later, the car disappeared down the alley. It felt as though something had been ripped out of Noelle, leaving her

Noelle hadn't heard from Stephen the night before. When she showed up to meet Daniel with dark circles under her eyes, he did a double take."Noelle, what'd you do last night, rob a bank?"She rubbed her bleary eyes. "I didn't sleep very well. What did you want to see me about?"Daniel's tone turned unusually serious. "My dad's sending me overseas for work. I came to say goodbye, and I wanted to ask if you'd come with me."Noelle had finally sorted out her feelings, and she wanted to be honest with him."Have a safe trip, Daniel. I hope you'll be happy."Daniel smiled, looking relieved. "I knew I'd regret it if I didn't ask. Now I can finally let it go."With things suddenly awkward between them, Daniel laughed loudly to cover his embarrassment."Noelle, come take a walk around our old school with me. Consider it my going-away present.""Okay."The campus looked different now. Several new classroom buildings had gone up, the teachers' offices everyone used to dread were in a
